Agrion - I did wonder a few pages back whether the faces were because of the need to perform to an audience at a distance, like a theatre actor projecting to the gods.

I've just found this on YT and think you might find it amusing, I think most of the Strictly dancers may have attended Miss Karen's lessons

Yes, thanks I did see it. Wonderfully fluid and elegant, as always, and so compelling to watch. I'm sure that kind of free expression would appeal to J too.

Apologies for going back to earlier posts, but I've been thinking about the 'gurning' or overacting thing, and I have to confess I still don't understand why they do it. I know most of the dance I watch nowadays is contemporary (where you don't use much facial expression, you tell the story with your body), so I went back and looked at some classical ballet, to see if the exaggerated expressions used there looked as odd as the ballroom ones. In fact they don't, as a lot of the story originally was told in mime, and most of the time you can't see the face from the back of the theatre anyway.

Here's a clip from Giselle with Baryshnikov and Alessandra Ferri in gurn mode classical ballet style

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOAFsU2kWPw

You really don't need to overact to hold an audience. I saw Baryshnikov dance several times in his later career with the White Oak, and he could hold an audience enthralled with the slightest gesture, even without the gymnastics he could do in his youth. And he's really short, as well, which makes it harder to look impressive.

Here is a clip of him, in his late 50's, dancing to his own heartbeat (warning, if you don't like modern dance this will drive you crazy!). Its semi improvised, in front of a live audience, they are enthralled, and not a gurn in sight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAVwr-BwGCk

So why do the ballroom couples do it? It puts me off watching them, even a really elegant dancer like Aliaz. Maybe its just because that's what is expected, and they get told if they don't do it, they won't win. A very stylised form of dance. Jay didn't do it, and was all the more impressive to me because of that. He can hold an audience naturally, without artifice.

Incidentally, I didn't think the Strictly Prom worked on TV either, which is a shame as they did a dance one a couple of years ago, which was great. Mind you, the camera angle made all the dancers look short, and it was right up the girl's knickers when they were lifted....it could easily have been a lot better!”

Saw White Oak live - it was great stuff.

That stage for Giselle looks incredibly tiny, especially as it's filled up with the corps de ballet - he can't stretch out for a series of major leaps, only one or two, so for me it looks a bit constricted and less flowing. Nevertheless, everything he does is gorgeous - also gifted with incredible balance - spins like a top in the air or grounded. Ferri also a very lovely dancer.

I have a DVD of Baryshnikov at Wolftrap shortly after he defected to the US. You can hear the audience gasps at his dancing. He was very versatile too - he could inject a lot of humour into his dancing.

Back on topic - where is the Radio Times link? I can't find it.

They were both tuned in to each other, and I think that was part of the reason they were so happy when training together as it must be rare to meet someone who has that connection.

That is such a great video, I sat here with a great big ridiculous grin on my face from start to finish

It's puddingy enough for me! Sounds lovely

One thing about subtle is that sometimes you do see more on re-viewing, but sometimes it's the subtlety of it that adds to the strength of it, in that it never gets tired.

I think I'll watch that a few times. Just for, erm, research purposes.

I found the Wolftrap clip on YT and it's amazing - thank you for mentioning it. Saw Ferri at CG but alas, not with Baryshnikov.

When I saw Miss Karen mentioned with facial representation and dancing I initially thought you meant Karen Hardy.
Her school of thought on dance also relates heavily on emoting with all facial muscles coming into play

The Wolftrap video is amazing - can I sneak in this one as well? Quality is a bit poor as its from a video clip, but it looks like its from the 70's and is a rehearsal for Le Jeune Homme et la Morte that he later did in White Nights, but without the amazing tricks, like the pirouettes in a plie..

Fab!

OK, I will behave now!

I'd much rather watch J&A than dancers like Karen Hardy.

And if I remember correctly good old Ramps wasn't one for lots of gurns.

I knew you would I know bad cat for not warning you. I'm practising my "ooooo" and "ducky" faces
Put "ballroom dancers making funny faces" into Google, there are hundreds of websites and posts about it. It's keeping me amused.

He didn't need to. Karen did more than enough gurning for two!

Oh I do wish we could go back in time and watch SCD series 13 again. Such a thrilling ride. I do miss Jaliona.
I watched the BBC proms. It just left me cold - apart from spotting the bits taken from Jaliona's routines.

I agree, what she choreographed for Jay was sensual rather than sexy.

Referring back to my new bible "Miss Karen's facial expressions" I believe that may be the Smug face

I suppose we have YouTube for reflection and Keep Dancing for moving forward.

Are you getting excited about Milton Keynes?

You never fail to stir an emotional response with your words Korky, they're just a beautiful insight

Making headway with the collection, should be ready to post the next edition tomorrow.
