Definitely not steroids. I've never heard of their use in this context. Coke seems to be the one most mentioned (as well as obvious emetics, cigarettes etc). Maybe it's to do with certain body proportions (Russians tend to be much less flexible in what is accepted because they are famed for their corps, which needs to be uniform) - certain proportions leg to torso and certain heights might allow for thinner frame while retaining sufficient muscle strength to support that frame. There must be some formulae out there!
Ballroom is clearly much more flexible in this regard. While the dancers are all slim, none of them have this terrible thinness. And they strive much more for the... um... female assets (whereas the same in ballet dancers can actually be in the way a bit). But then again, I don't think they have the same kind of muscle power (high kicks are one thing - raising the leg slowly and holding is a different level of tough, not to mention associated balance problems - ballroom dancers also don't have to do the same kind of jumps and lifts).
The comparisons are fascinating (to me, anyway!) Ballroom is an odd thing - but fascinating! I really hope that Strictly doesn't stray too far from its roots. I want to see the celebs learning this form of dance, not any old dancing.
