Many thanks for your review Jayfan. I'm looking forward to Wimbledon!

I found a review of the show on the reviews hub, which gives Jay a bit of a mixed, but sympathetic reception. It would be good to hear your view.

Thanks Janetshep.
Well considering it was his first night and they hadn't appeared to have had a lot of rehearsal time it's not bad. I expect that he'll get better and better as the performances progress and the nerves settle.

Thanks Jayfan for the review. Looking forward to hearing more reports from everyone over the next few days. X

Bit of a lazy reviewer, but they clearly loved the jive, who wouldn't. And Robin. Ditto. First night hiccups apart, sounds like he did a pretty fine job. The rest of the company are already a week into the show, so that's only to be expected.

It's his first time in that situation probably since MADD days, and it must be a bit of a challenge to retrain your ear and muscle memory to a different tune in a different situation, in different costumery, under what he probably perceives as the gimlet gaze of the pros.

That change of music must have been pretty last minute, as Aliona only tweeted about it a week or so ago. Maybe the Beeb had issues with copyright, rather than the originators of the song?

JayFan
A huge 'thank you' for taking such trouble - and triumphing over technology - to give us your view of the performance. From what you say there was a great buzz to the evening, with everyone willing them on.

I'm surprised that the music wasn't in the programme running order - that's where it usually is - probably because they were printed before the change?

jayfan - Thank you for your report. So glad you got to have chat with Jay. You obviously have the knack!

I almost didn't read your report because I didn't want to be spoiled, (but then I did want to be 'prepared' 😬 ). Anyway, I think you gave just the right amount away .

I really enjoyed the Paso. It was great to see the whole dance unedited. There is a bit in the Paso which I always thought looked a bit awkward as we only saw it from the waist up. Seeing it full length it wasn't awkward at all. When Jay grabbed Aliona at the end it was really quite thrilling. It was also great to see the charleston with out the alternative ending. I wasn't thrilled about the music though. There was a bit of a whoopsie on the salsa at the end but the audience were very kind and Jay was very apologetic. The jive was really good - fast and confident- and lovely to see with no daft wig, flapping trousers or gaping socks. Jay looked a bit lost at the end of the show but I think they probably had not rehearsed that bit very much. Jay looked a bit closer to how he looked in the cha, cha, cha than at the end of SCD and they obviously have not danced together as much recently but it was really great to see them together again.
”

Thanks so much for the spoiler review.

Spoiler
TBH I think it's as expected - we believed them under-rehearsed and J not as fit. Let's just hope J settles down (I think that's likely once he's got over first night nerves, which is why I wouldn't have wanted to see first night - shame reviews are always based on first night performances, as these are what can encourage an audience to attend or give it a miss.)

Looking svelte and pretty dance fit. The FF pics show he must have been working out - his arms looked more muscled than in Strictly. And Aliona said he was 'insanely strong' then!

I think KD would benefit from better PR, it's only human to use what's already been written and spike it up a bit, so it makes sense to give them something decent to start with. The lazier hacks will always take the easiest option and use previous pegs on which to hang their critiques.

I think it is pretty fair although I thought he looked as happy as you can during the Paso.

I just looked at Ballet News to see if there's anything about the Launch Show. Loads of pictures, including one of the judges applauding J&A. But none of J&A at all!

I'm dying to see what the viewing figures will be like next week....

I wondered whether the criticism had come more from the Craig Revel-Horwood school of jazz faces! Thanks Jayfan.

Yes, did sound like same old, same old, didn't it! If the reviewer went with only the image of the Holy Jive to go on, perhaps expectations were a little high!

Jayfan, thanks for taking the time and trouble (finally overcome!) to give us your impressions and hope all your memories will be HAPPY HAPPY ones

DD makes some good observations - an oopsie wouldn't be surprising (wouldn't be Jay without, would it ) on a first night - don't know how big the theatre is but knowing how nervous he seems to get when he can see people watching him it seems inevitable. That's not meant to be negative at all, by the way, it's part of the way he captivated us all last year, isn't it?

Thank you Jayfan for fabulous reviews! It's great to get a little insight into what to expect from Jay and Aliona in the show!
Janetshep and Ahouch - I agree with your observation ahouch; it was first night in an unfamiliar theatre. Considering Jay's track record he will be determined to improve at each performance and will hopefully become more settled and enjoy the experience Hope Jay doesn't read the reviews as I would hate it to knock his confidence.

Spoiler
I'm sure J is well aware of positives and negatives of his performance without needing to read reviews, so I hope they wouldn't affect him. And I'm equally sure he'll improve as time goes on (for one thing, each performance increases his previously perhaps insufficient rehearsal time!)
