Just to add, I changed my plans and went to KD in MK on the Thursday not the Friday.
I have tried to highlight who I remember being at the various meet-ups.
Hannah was there as well plus I think KinP.
Dippydancing also did a report.

ETA - attempt at highlighting failed!
So
Saturday first meet-up - I think everyone but Bluefan, Gilly O, Sam67. Hannah and KinP were there though I think.
Saturday second meet-up- I think everyone was there but Stelladog. Kmelly and Speedy also there plus Rafferty and TT. Plus Teentink.

Connection

Only last year
Came a dancer so rare
Whose presence is still
So heavy on the air

One year ago
It was so clear
That his lyrical dancing
Was entering another sphere

The clocks in two hearts
Ticked in perfect sync
It was their time
For the perfect link

Invisible heartstrings
Joined together
Tugged at emotions
Birds of one feather

When two lives touch
Connect and meet
Forge a network of ties
Dance to the same beat

True art is created
So moving and pure
And poetical dancing
Will always endure

Okay, so that is as bizarre as all hell. For possibly the most outstanding dance ever on Strictly I understand this number of views, but for Judge Rinder? It was fun, but not THAT much fun. Not enough to go viral.

Makes me a bit sad TBH because it de-values the jive viewing figures.

Hello peeps. Just wanted to pop in quickly to explain being MIA since Wimbledon. Been really poorly, though in my less feverish moments have read and enjoyed the reports. Wasn't actually well on the morning of KD but stuffed myself with over the counter meds and made sure I enjoyed myself (and had rallied by later in the day). I won't bore you with the deets, but what I assumed was a tummy upset that refused to die, turned out to be something else and I ended up in hospital last night. They've been stuffing me with fluids and IV antibiotics and am feeling miles better. Not seen Strictly yet (that shows you how rotten I felt 😜 ). Not eaten since last Sunday and on 'clear fluids' only. Apparently that includes jelly, so that's what I'm getting for tea. Yum 🤒

I think just more people are engaging with Strictly online than ever before.

YouTube views have stayed relatively consistent over the last few years (bar Jays Jive) but FB and Twitter have become so much more important just in the last two years. Even 2 years ago you wouldn't discuss strictly with other people on FB, you'd be on here (if you knew such a place exists) now you comment on Strictly as it happens on their FB and Twitter, which increases their reach as then all your friends see it.

I know it's only a year later but it doesn't surprise me at all that it was watched so widely. He's a well known name. I wouldn't have been able to name The Wanted and couldn't have picked Jay out of a line up which is probably the same as most of the viewers. Judge Rinder is well known and it was whacky and a shock (a diff shock from Jays Jive) but still a water cooler moment that people will discuss and share, especially as Strictly continues to increase its ratings year on year.

I think last year was the first year Strictly went all out to engage with SM the audience have now caught up this year and are fully engaging with it, so unfortunately as with most things the first time will be beaten.

Very sorry indeed to hear this Fridgesoup.
Hope you are feeling well enough to get home and eat something a bit nicer than jelly before too long. 👍

Oh soupy, sorry to hear you've been so poorly. Hope you are soon on the road to recovery and out of hospital.

I don't know if you are supporting anyone in particular on Strictly this year, but if you are I hope they did well in their first dance.

I got Lesley and Anton in the sweepstake I join in with.

Maybe the very fact that J's jive went viral has made so many more people aware of the Strictly phenomenon. But no other dance went viral last year. Not even close as far as I'm aware.

He wasn't even top of the leaderboard, or the most exceptional dance of the opening shows (certainly the funniest, though). He's also way ahead on You Tube views (156k just 2 days later!!!)

ETA: so sorry to hear your news, fridgesoup - hope you get better quickly

Good point Lisa.
This time last year it would not have occurred to me to engage with SCD through SM. Today I was showing my dad how to follow SCD through FB.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see more videos go viral this year, people are just way more engaged with the SM aspect.

Jay was still the only one to do it in his year, that's what matters.

Eta maybe if they'd put some of Jeremy's videos online they'd have gone viral for the novelty factor. People like things that are amazing or that make them laugh.

The most popular dances on YouTube are a mixture of "Oh, wow, that was an incredible dance" and "Oh, s***, what did I just see" moments .....

ETA - and that will continue, with the "Oh, s***" moments increasing, I think.

I’ve just done a huge long post saying the same thing about stats, I won’t post it. Also, you have to add in factors like the fastest growing user group for Facebook is the older generation, more the SCD typical viewer, this coupled with the ever expanding use of smartphones and tablets is, in part, a reason why “likes” and “views” go up exponentially every year. Facebook is no longer the “go to” social media platform of younger and even middle-aged people like me. Using my sister as an example, who is much older than me and retired, she probably “likes” 20 things a day, my sons use it primarily for Messenger and post probably once every couple of months. Most of their friends are the same as they don’t want older relatives to see what they are up to! So to summarise, although SCD is watched by various ages it is the older viewer who would now be using Facebook as a means of approval.

YouTube on the other hand is still not as widely used by the older generation, created in 2005 but again it is only really in recent years that it has exploded and many older viewers of SCD would not use it as their means of approval. So the demographic of viewers is different. J already had a fanbase that would have been used to using YT, Rinder, apart from Uni students who wouldn’t be watching SCD anyway, has a different fanbase and probably doesn’t have that YT following already in place.

Having said all that what makes something go viral is just “one of those things” that can’t be easily defined. Very often it just captures the mood on a particular day, not whether it was good or bad dancing, also given the rise of Tumblr whether its is a good meme or not, I suspect the faces the honourable judge made had something to do with it

Soupy- hope you get sorted out soon! Shouldn't they be feeding you gazpacho as well as jelly, though? (sorry) (((()))))
BMLisa
25-09-2016
And don't forget that of all the photos and strictly gifs shared on week 1 Jay got 42k likes and all the contestants got less than 5k.

Although we will inevitably compare the dancing, I don't think we can compare the SM reaction.

Thanks for the kind wishes Lisa, jayfan, TT, Lisa and SR. I expect to be home in a day or so. It's amazing how quickly they can set you right.

Mind you, a bowl of Heinz tommy soup sounds like fine-dining to me at the moment 😬

Conceivably on FB, but not on YT.

TBH, I'm scratching my head a bit. I hope it doesn't put me off JR - I like him. Difference is that I liked J for his dancing first (only as the season went on, for his delightful personality - although I was always charmed by his shyness and terror!). Having said that, I really like JR's personality as well, but in a very different way. He's an intelligent TV personality and quick to be able to assert himself on the main show. Maybe JR is just a lot more well known in the Strictly demographic. *scratches head again*. Popular yes, viral no.

Yes it is FB views. YT is much much lower. Not that I've looked. Don't want to add to the figures!

As Lola said what goes viral is pretty unquantifiable. It just does!

I guess when someone shares it with the comment "omfg this is hilarious" people will watch it, but if you don't watch strictly and you see a post about Jays Jive "omfg this is the most phenomenal dance I've ever seen" you'd probably scroll on by as it won't interest you.

Glad you like it Drizzle. The music is the 2nd Movement from Vivaldis concerto for two guitars. Here's a link to YouTubehttps://youtu.be/Kl4NKdck6YE
( I had an abridged arrangement on an album by Sky - Sky2- a kind of classical/rock group from late 70's early 80's. You may have heard of guitarist John Williams & bass player Herbie Flowers )
