Absolutely. There's an awful lot of "Look at me" dancing this year

Evening all. Just tucked up in hotel room after a great time watching KD with two of the loveliest ladies I've ever been privileged enough to meet, jayfan and ellie_bee.

I wasn't sure what to expect with KD but Robin is a revelation. I only wish we could have seen his true ability on SCD.

The ensemble cast were very good and the singing, especially from one of the women, was really high quality.

Louis had obviously been practising a lot. I enjoyed all his dances with Anya and the Charleston was impressive.

The stage door lurking was new to me but everyone was really nice (Anya's dog was a real cutie!). They could not have been more approachable and were all appreciative of the support they had.

Roll on Edinburgh!

Well, maybe Jay & Aliona can squeeze another guest appearance in

Does not sound like I missed much on SCD. I recall that movie week was pretty dull last year (Peter Andre's strange Captain Sparrow themed dance being the only one I can recall apart from Jaliona and not for very good reasons) until Jay and Aliona and the holy jive.

Had a fantastic evening with Jelly L and Ellie Bee.
We lurked at the stage door after the show and got photos with Anya, Robin and Louis. All absolutely lovely as was Anya's dog. Jelly L befriended bald headed dancer's partner. Very nice people.

Chatted to some mega Robin fans who had been to Bromley to see KD with Lisa Riley.

Tonight was the 5th time I have seen KD ( as I write that I am slightly embarrassed and wonder if that trips me into slightly mad crazed fan territory) and even though I would only have ever seen something like this once pre- Jaliona and mainly went tonight to meet Jelly L and Ellie Bee again, I really enjoyed the show and was up on my feet dancing at the end as before.

Great audience reaction as with other shows.

Slightly different cast. Ellie Bee and I were chatting in the interval about how Jasmine looked a bit different (speculating on lip job, boob job etc) only to read in the programme that it was a different dancer! We joked about that with Robin who also joked about the difference in body shape.

Robin was very pleased when we said that we thought he was much better than he had had chance to show on Strictly. He confirmed that KD will resume next March but without Anya who is dancing with Pasha and with a new cast
.”

Lovely KD review. And you're lucky to see the different dynamics with different special guests. Interesting points about next March and Anya.

Bit cross at the moment. As I went to submit this: I lost the lot, and had to re-do it. So this is even later than the original one would have been. I was out earlier, but as I had recorded SCD, I was able to watch it when I got home. Kept notes, throughout, as before. But I must stress, again, I am not a dancer. I just wrote about what I found enjoyable, and what I found less so, and why.
So here goes:-

SCD 2016. WEEK 3. MOVIE WEEK.

Spoiler

Opened with a Group Dance from R&H films; The Sound of Music; The King and I etc. Lots of floaty frocks. Ahh * thought bubble....wouldn't that be nice.......* Of course, I know I would just look like a tomato that had been kept in the fridge for too long. But a girl can dream.......

Daisy and Alijaz QuickStep. Mary Poppins. Utterly charming. Elegant. Graceful. Quick. A joy to watch.

Anastacia and Brendan. Viennese Waltz. Twilight. "A Thousand Years." How I love that song. Pleasantly surprised with this dance, after last week. It was just 'nice' tho'. Did not electrify. Maybe all that force-feeding of the sob-story, is exacting a price. I don't know. Liked it better on second viewing.

Danny and Oti. Paso Doble. The Mask of Zorro. Bit underwhelming. None of Jay's breath-taking shaping, and edge-of-your-seat movement. This one seemed to be more of a feature-film, 'off-the-shelf', idea of a Paso Doble. He seemed to just go through the motions. No 'connection' to the dance. Quite a good technician, in that sense. Seems that the judges disagree with me. Ho-hum. What do I know?

Lesley and Anton. QuickStep. Easter Parade. Fun and Quirky. Not the best QuickStep, perhaps. But very good effort. Yo! Darcey agreed with me: "Quirky". Oh, and Bruno, too! FF past Craig.

Will and Karen. Salsa. Slumdog Millionaire. Entertaining dance. Hip-action may have suffered at the altar of Bollywood action. Nevertheless: good effort, even if the salsa seemed a bit absent, at times. Yay! Craig continues to disagree with me: so glad.
I think that Craig is at his harshest with the likeable boys. That might be my imagination, tho'

Naga and Pasha. Tango. Mission Impossible. Extended furtle with the wires, at the beginning, gave grounds for concern. She was rather stiff, and still a bit 'bunny in the headlights'. Possibly the staccato-action, in a dance such as this, might suit someone suffering with nerves, better than a slower one. They can jerk rather than shake, perhaps. I don't know. I'm sure the dancers, among us, will correct me on this. Anyway, good effort. And what a great costume! Super figure (says she, enviously).

Judge Rinder and Oksana. Charleston. Meet the Flintstones. Oh, Craig. At least if JR looked at himself in the mirror, he would actually be able to see his own reflection, therein. Anyway, to the dance. Love him, so I admit, I'm biased. Felt he was a bit restrained, this time. But did well. I was a bit surprised, tho'. Who thought of him for Fred Flintstone? Think he would have done much better with a different film/character/costume. It was almost as if someone was trying to spike his guns........

Ore and Joanne. American Smooth. "Singing in the Rain". Oh. I've always really liked Ore. Even cultivated an interest in sport, when he was presenting it. He always made it seem fascinating. Of course, that may have had something to do with him being rather easy on the eye. Anyway, he didn't disappoint, tonight. Loved, loved, loved this dance. Ultra-smooth intro, which continued into a beautiful dance. Good timing, sophisticated, confident and full of personality. Very reminiscent of the original. Good choreography. Well done to both of you. Oh dear, Craig agreed with me....I must be slipping. Wonder if there'll be any 10s, 'as it's Week 3'......Apparently not.....35 (2 less than Jay's jive in the same week).

Laura and Joe Varney. Salsa. Moulin Rouge. Very good. Looked beautiful. Slight synchro issues, on occasion. Good hip action.

Greg and Natalie. American Smooth. Robin Hood. "Everything I Do....." I liked it. I thought 'gentle giant', when I saw him dance this time. Good idea: the rear-guard jacket. A well-known disguise, for those of us who are more amply endowed. A sweet dance. Hope the judges are kind....On the whole, they were, I think. Quite right, too.

Claudia and AJ. Charleston. Bugsy Malone. Very, very good. Really liked this. Glad to see the judges scores were all good.

Tameka and Gorka. Tango. Beverly Hills Cop. Good dance. Owed much to the costumes, and props, I think. Thought she did fairly well. Lots of steps, quite well executed, in my opinion. Just wish I could warm to her more. I mean, she's not as coarse and inyerface, as Kelly was. Hopefully, time will smooth the edges, for me.

Ed Balls and Katya. Samba. The Mask. Ahh lovely boy, lovely boy. I love this guy: he really goes for it. He's not afraid that he might make a fool of himself: and so, he doesn't. Good dance. Heart and soul into it. And plenty of humour: both on and off the dancefloor. Please GBP, vote for him. Sure Craig will put a dampener on things, and give it a low mark.....Good Heavens. So he did. Mind you, Craig will be aware that Ed faced much worse, in the rough and tumble of the HofC. So he'll know that Ed can take it, and maybe give the odd witty response, here and there.

Louise and Kevin. Cha Cha. Flashdance. Looks like all the men's prayers were answered with that outfit. All the better to view her leg extensions. Good dance. Well done to both of you. Kevin may be in with a chance to be bridesmaid, yet again, this year.

Hard to choose who might be in the bottom two, tonight. Could possibly be Tameka and Lesley. Or maybe, Anastacia, again. Might even be one of these, and a Oh No!

Not going to bother the Spoiler thread (not that I know where to find it). I'll wait, as usual, for the Results Show, later on.
Indignation before bed, is never a good idea.

So far, none of the dances this year, have matched any of Jay's dances, imo. And that goes for his QuickStep, as well....*dives for cover, to avoid TT-shaped guided missiles*

Totally agree, RaffertyCat. As I said yesterday, J was always in another class. This year's crop are dancing by numbers, not dancing from the heart.

Off for a two-hour bath now (reading).

Knew I had missed one couple - yes Claudia was very good - Charleston is great dance for her.
I'm not a big fan of AJs - have taken to some of the other new pros a bit more -
My fav for pure entertainment was Ed & Katya

[quote=Toasted Toad;84161377]All in all, I thought this was a really enjoyable show. Much better than film week last year (with the one notable exception). No total wow routines, but the impact might perhaps get lost in the mix anyway because there are so many good dancers this year. My rundown:

Spoiler

Danny - actually, a bit meh for me. Maybe because we've already seen him dance to a high level and he didn't raise his game here, just danced very well again. I didn't think his shaping was very strong - it was slightly too smooth. Oti had the advantage of more appropriate music for her Paso and I think her choreo was better (sorry, Ali! I think the better music allowed for more choreography), but J danced his Paso better. Much more into the floor and much stronger - Danny seemed to be bouncing sometimes, making his Paso not very different from other styles.

LOVED Cloudier's Charleston. So fast.

Louise - poor choreo this week, I thought. I thought she might perhaps feel inhibited in her more revealing costume. She needs to find a balance. Again, too placed. Too nice.

I thought Daisy's dance was gorgeous, and was sad it got pushed down the leaderboard because she was first on and they had to leave space for some higher marks if they wanted. For the most part, glued together in hold (not commented on), and so bouncy.

Anastacia - meh. Looked really careful.

Lesley - tremendous fun, and she really went for it. Some of Anton's best choreography in years.

Will - loved this one. Not sure I don't agree with Len, though - was there enough salsa? Really smooth lifts.

Naga - well done for not being thrown off by harness trouble at the beginning. She still isn't dancing to her potential.

Rinder - a bit messy.

Ore - fine. He still looks to be hunching over her a bit to me. At least she bl**dy well got on with some dancing this time. Definitely didn't deserve his place on the leaderboard.

Ed - so much better than I'd thought he'd be from training footage. Katya is a genius, both in teaching and choreography. I think she's becoming my new favourite pro.

Tameka - fast forward. Unbearable to watch. She HAS to go. Please!

Agree with all your comments TT.
As Darcy said , thought Cloudia 's charlston was " outstanding "
Best dance of the night for me.

Yes great report.
Have read back now and found a few more. But I hope they aren't a couple that get overlooked by others in the comp who are seen as triers and/or pretty/sexy

I would like to see a sexy/funny competitor who is trying to gain a new skill by learning to dance exquisitely..
Oh bugger that was last year. A certain competitor called Jay with a superb partner called Aliona.

So I will stay with my Cloudier as the non dance experience girl who is producing lovely dances. (With spot on teknik. Footwork great. Heel turns etc. AJ would make Ali proud..😀..)

I enjoyed Claudia and AJ's dance but the 'custard pie' ending spoilt it for me. Don't think Len was too pleased with that either. None of them have Jay's "it" factor yet and not sure they ever will.

Claudias dance is the only one this year I've watched back (apart from Jays winner dance)

It was brilliant. I'm a huge Bugsy Malone fan though and Claudia and AJ looked like they could have stepped off the set.

Also the ending made me laugh what with Claudia tripping over the set and then thwacking AJ so hard the pie went everywhere and then AJ apologising like a naughty boy at school 😂😂

Love those silly moments.

Think Len was just putting on an act, think all the judges enjoyed the dance, and the custard pie at the end. If people are watching the show , looking for another J , or comparing other dancers with him, then they are sadly going to be disappointed ,it just isn't going to happen ever .

Oh so much ditto to your post Polly.
I went into That Jive - then the salsa and the paso (now that was a paso) etc etc
I am not gonna get into comparisons of personalities or dances (if I can help it..😂..)
Suffice it to say that to me Jay has a wonderfully naive yet worldly wise personality. How he does it I do not know but it is a joy to see.
I am sure there are many other superlatives that folk can attribute to this young man. And all of them good.
So good morning

Louis and Anya in KD

I am going to put this in a spoiler in case anyone is going to see Louis later this year.

Spoiler
Louis had 3 days rehearsal according to Robin and had already performed in Cardiff for a week when we saw him. Anya was also obviously a new partner as he danced with Flavia on SCD. He was as expected very toned having just returned from Rio. He wore costumes comparable to the other dancers - black trousers like the ones Jay wore for the paso and either pink, purple, beigy/goldy, or blue sparkly tops with the slashed front and a white shirt/waistcoat/black trouser combo for the waltz. He looked very smart. I recognised one routine from his time on SCD, the charleston. The others may also have been but I am not as well versed on his dances as I am Jay's! I really enjoyed the waltz and charleston. The charleston took advantage of his gymnastic skills. The samba and CCC were competently done as well. He looked at ease, had a good interaction with Anya and was obviously working on improving the dances (little interaction between him and Anya at the end of the waltz suggested he had got something right this time that he might not have done before). None of the dances were as fast as any of Jay's (as you would expect from the choice of dances) nor as ambitious with the possible of exception of the charleston. None of them came anywhere close to the jive. They also seemed a little bit shorter. I enjoyed watching them dance though. It certainly helped that they were not doing very familiar dances with the 'wrong ' music and costumes which was what it felt like to many audience members in MK particularly, many of whom were expecting to see the Pulp Fiction jive. It also helped that Louis was dancing with Anya as it made the guest slots feel more like part of the same show as did the costumes tbh. The lighting was better too, especially compared to the early shows in MK. Louis was well received but not with the same enthusiasm as Jay (and I am not just talking about hardcore Jaliona fans here) and I don't think anyone stood up even after the charleston which was their big dance. The people next to me were huge dance fans with kids who did ballroom competitions. The lady next to me had not been able to pick a favourite to vote for in SCD last year (I didn't try to convert her) and they thoroughly enjoyed the show. They and many others were there for Robin mainly I think, not for Louis, and as before Robin and Anya were excellent, working very hard to create an atmosphere and engage the audience. As I said before, a very enjoyable show.

Last night's SCD

Watched the clips of the dances from movie week this morning.

This is who I watched to the end:
Claudia
Greg
Lesley
The Judge
Ed
Oti
Ore

Watched Will all the way through to try to work out what dance it was.

Didn't bother watching to the end:
Louise
Daisy
Laura
Tameka
Naga
Anastasia

Make of that what you will.

Ready, aim, fire!! Week for week -

Week 1 - Danny's cha cha beats Jay's, partly due to eyesore costume, but mostly due to crippling nerves.

Week 2 - Jay's waltz did it for me far more than Danny's VW. Partly due to incredibly tender relationship between him and Aliona and his long legs and arms which were beginning to make their presence known.

Week 3 - well, obviously, Jive beats anything.

I never thought J was best every week. Just that J at his best was on another level to anybody else at their best. And even in the less good weeks (aside from the QS - that routine was a nightmare once he lost it - not a couple of oopsies, but loads - he did much better in the Quickathon), there were always elements of beauty which the others didn't have.

Now that we've had 3 routines from Danny, I think he might have a weakness in his relentlessly musical theatre approach in the legs. He is always bending softly whereas that is not always appropriate. He doesn't always drive through the floor but dances 'on' it. J adjusted better. This is a small flaw relatively speaking and I doubt it will ever be picked up on specifically. Others might disagree with me.

I thought Cloudier was dance of the night, but for me, second was actually Daisy. It was a delightful quickstep, wonderfully light and bouncy for such a big girl, almost no gapping (difficult in a quickstep), lovely dance in the mood of the song. Got overlooked with more flashy dances and lower scored to leave room for Danny, Cloudier etc.

Daisy is my journey contestant. Wonderful ballroom, great potential in Latin if she can ever get there. Cloudier will always well, probably) have problems for me personality wise - both her and the monumentally irritating AJ.

However, still a whole bunch of contestants that are holding my interest and only a couple that cause me to reach for the FF button. And thank heavens, no J!

ETA: forgot to add - great reviews everyone, lovely to see so many slightly differing points of view.

Great comprehensive review, Rafferty!

Funny you should pick up on J&A's quickstep. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder, and those few oopsies mattered not a jot to me. It was so full of joy, every time they danced it. My favourite was the Quackathon, it started with that sweet fist bump, then they were flying so high he forgot he had to land, and A flew on with him. That's magic.

I like Ed's exhuberance too. He seemed to be the only one enjoying himself last night!

Yes for me Danny is performing a dance as if he's in the middle of a 2 year run on stage.

He's memorised it and going through all the steps lovely, but he's not "in the dance"

I honestly believe that sometimes Jays mistakes were because he was actually dancing the dance not the steps and he was getting kind of lost in it.

He deffo could have done with a bit of Danny's confidence and showmanship in the early weeks, but for me Danny and Oti just come across as two pros performing a fab dance like its their day job. Whereas J&A created moments that you wanted to stay in.

Danny's VW did create that for me but his other dances haven't.

His Paso was too light and skippy and had little drive and power. JaysPaso was vastly superior to Danny's let alone his Jive.
