Tried to manage one word reviews for weeks 1 - 4
Cha cha - potential
Waltz - promising
Jive - phenomenal
Quickstep - Oops
The funny part is that Jellymum (as named by BeesKnees) told me in week 4 that JAliona would go through to the final, if not win. I must have looked quite askance because she just said "that young man can dance" along with a look only a mother can give.
As the weeks went by, I learned a lot more about my parents dance history. They attended countrywide dance competitions with relatives who competed in ballroom (swapping dance partners after the competition). Their dance heroes were Bill and Bobbie Irvine (13 times World Champions in ballroom, Latin and nine dance in the sixties - I looked them up). They didn't compete because they couldn't afford to.
She explained she always wore at least 3 inch heels because of the height difference (about the same as JAliona) and the hold and strides had to be adjusted, which took getting used to over time.
I only remember seeing them dance once. We were on holiday and, as a 9 year old, I was mortified! By the time I would have been old enough to appreciate it, my Dad had, sadly, died. I only recall her dancing once since his death, with her sister at a family party. My comment about her leading a rather nifty foxtrot was replied to with a very matter of fact "of course."
By about week 9, she was certain they would win (she was not rooting for them, simply stating her opinion). So when the judges were promoting one couple in the final and I started to wibble I got another "mother look!"
So I have to thank JAliona, not only for providing some exquisite dances but for making me realise that those quiet "tut tuts" across the room are imbued with more knowledge and experience than I (and possibly 3 out of the 4 judges when it comes to ballroom) will ever attain.
Sorry if this is a bit OT.
Beth glad the exams are over. Hope you have a great summer.
jnb what you are doing in Becks' name is wonderful. Thoughts are with you.
Thank you to our reviewers, giffers, bards and Fred for providing all the links and review info.
Hugs to all who need (or just want) them.”
