I am certainly not a choreography expert but I think that you can recognise the spirit/style of different pros choreography. Obviously the steps are the same year on year but the different pros have a recognisable style.
I thought there was a little bit of Aliona there.

There was, as there also was last week.

Day out at the races today, so got back too late for SCD. Reading the comments on here, and some bits and pieces on the MF (selected threads only), don't think I can be arrissed to watch any of it in retrospect.

More interested in the progress of BIG, to be honest, and so glad to see that Jay seems to be having a ball ....

Hope you had a good day. Not a vintage show to put it politely but worth a look at Ed Balls and Katya if you want a chuckle.

It's the first week I actually feel critical of Katya - too ambitious and unnecessary. She had some lovely choreography before then with nice lifts.

I felt nobody should have been top of the leaderboard!

Had a lovely day, thank you. Watched Danny's rumba - seemed to be an awful lot of arm flinging and bobbing up and down for a dance that I thought was supposed to be a continuous flow of movement. Also failed to achieve either tenderness or sexiness. Hey ho.

I don't know how much is down to Katya and how to the producers. I think Ed wants to show he is improving and trying to dance but then they are handicapped with rubbish music, a bloomin rucksack and stupid concept. I think she, with Ed, is probably over compensating a bit for all the obstacles in their way. But I do think that she, AJ and Oksana have not yet worked out how to make the best of their celebs, possibly due to lack of experience in an SCD type situation and possibly because they are more willing to take 'advice' from the producers and other choreographers.

I think I would have had the Judge top of the leader board. He dances throughout his body and feels the music. He needs to close his mouth a bit more though. I hope he gets the time to rehearse and opportunity to do something a bit more serious in future weeks (assuming he stays of course.)

I can't actually believe I am gonna say this but I agree with the few tweets I have read from one James Jordan re the various dances.
He also thinks there is over marking and dare one say favouritism. Shock horror

I also cannot believe some of Marian Keynes tweets. Very in your face to some people. Not that I'm an avid follower of hers so this may be the norm. I caught them in passing and won't be going there again.

ETA now read all of Jordans tweets and yes I agree with him on all of the celebs. What's all that about!!😞

I'll just put this up, then go back, and catch up with you all.

SCD 2016. Week 5. Report.

Spoiler

Rewound to watch Tess' and Claudia's bit, again (I drifted off, for a moment, while they were speaking), because I heard no mention of Laura's ankle-injury bye. Yep, I was right the first time: no mention. Brendan's sick-leave, yes, but no Laura. How curious. Perhaps they'll mention it, in the line-up....And so it came to pass. I think they are allowed only one bye, per series. That's been in place for some years.

Judge Rinder and Oksana. Jive.

Yesss! At last! Well done JR.There was a good chance I would really like this dance, as I love love love the music. But the jive is always a favourite of mine - if done well: and I think it was (might have got my QS-neophyte hat, on here.....but I don't care).
People may have zoomed in on the toes: kicks and flicks 'n' stuff: and that's fair enough. I still felt entertained, and had a big smile on my face, throughout. Watched it again. He really looked as if he enjoyed himself, tonight. I think we'll have to resign ourselves to his 'lovin' it' face, tho'.
Len loved it. No mention of footwork: nothing new there, then. Never fear - Craig's here, to fill in the gaps.
6; 8; 8; 7 = 29.

Ventriloquist's dummy and sidekick, came on to do the T&Cs pointless turn.

Lesley and Anton. Tango. To traditional (or is it 'authentic'?) music.

Fortune-teller, crystal ball and hapless punter.
First time I've ever noticed 'bare-arm' sleeves. Think it was a long-sleeved vest, attached to the middle finger. (Oh, Lesley was wearing it, btw: just in case you haven't watched the show).
Impressive start: straight into the dance - good. I like these two together, very much. I thought Lesley did well. Imagine being held in Anton's vice-like grip. Who would dare to put a foot wrong? Height disparity, a bit of a disadvantage, I think - made smooth delivery a bit of a pipe-dream, mayhap.
Judges: mixed.
5; 6; 7; 6 = 24.

Will someone please put a sock in Claudia's mouth? These 'jokes' are getting worse.

Greg and Natalie. Cha Cha.

Thought Greg did quite well in this dance: though I didn't think he connected with it, as much as he could have done. Glad to see he's making steady, if not sparkly, progress. Could have been a smidge more active, tho', imo. His derriere was looking rather diminished, and didn't seem to be enjoying itself, as much as in previous dances. I thought it was, overall, a good effort. Though, doubtless, the footwork police will have plenty to say....And so they did. Well some of them, anyway.
Judges: encouraging and supportive. Except Craig, of course.
4; 6; 7; 7 = 24.

Anastacia and Gorka. (Brendan's replacement). QuickStep.

Good dance, I thought (but then, what would I know?). Anastacia seemed to connect with the dance, and looked as if she was really enjoying it. Fast, full of content, and (deep breath)......I think the footwork was quite good, too. The 'sitting knee-spreads' were a bit of a surprise, tho'. Think they were meant to be fun, but, for me, they lowered the tone, slightly. (Was that me, saying that?). Anyway, we'll see what the grown-ups have to say.
Oh, Anastacia!.....Stop it! Tess doesn't need any encouragement. And anyway, they only give her so many cracker-jokes, per programme. She can't afford to run out of them before the end.
Judges really liked the dance. Yay!
7; 7; 8; 8 = 30.

Louise and Kevin. Rumba.

Straight into the dance - no messing about. And what a beautiful dance, it was. I loved it! Thought there was something familiar about it, at times: but then, I suppose, why wouldn't there be? It was smooth, elegant, light and seductive. Not sultry or raunchy, imo. Well done, Louise and Kevin. Hope they get good marks.
8; 8; 8; 9 = 33.

Oh, Alijaz. You must learn to keep up with Claudia's silly dance. You are a sweetie, tho'.

Ed and Katya. American Smooth/Foxtrot.

Amarillo: perhaps not the best music choice, for this dance. Oh dear, this does not bode well, but we'll see. I do so want this to be a good dance. I wonder if Ed would do better with a more experienced 'pro': one who could teach him to dance properly. He's so keen to learn.
Too much silly faffing, at the beginning (good time-waster, tho'). The bits in hold were really good, imo. Trouble is, there weren't enough of them. Good rise and fall. Bit of swing and sway: but blink, and you'd miss the lot. Thought the bits between 'in hold', were silly and stompy. The lifts were very good, tho'. Impressive. Well done, Ed! Altho' the third one may have gone a bit awry, perhaps: and got the biggest laugh. He recovered well, tho'. Oh, Ed! I do love you.
I'm just wondering....would the ending be classed as a lift? If so, that would make it four lifts in this AS/ Fxtrt. Oh, no!
After the dance, they did that third lift again.....just because... It didn't look, altogether, much different, to me. But at least he wasn't clamped on to her 'lady parts', this time. Audience loved it.
We'll see what the judges have to say. Hope they don't slay him, again.
Len!...A good joke! I can't believe it!
On the whole, the judges were quite kind: especially Len, and also Darcey.
Craig. You've been sent to Coventry.
2; 6; 6; 4 = 18.

Ore and Joanne. Waltz

Oh, Ore. Re the pre-VT pose. Showing the contents of one's mouth: be they tongue, or empty space: is never a good look. Even on you.

The Dance. Very good effort. Lovely choreography. Lots of content, executed well. Good 'rise and fall'. Plenty of personality: but could have been smoother and 'softer', imo. No point in making a comparison with Jay's (and his waltz was in Week 2, remember), I'd just be repeating myself, over and over, again.
Think the judges will like this one.
Good Heavens, Craig waxing lyrical! You can come back from Coventry, just for now. Don't bother taking off your hat and coat, just yet.
The other judges enthused.
9; 9; 9; 9 = 36.

Daisy and Alijaz. Charleston.

Good idea, starting in the dark. A first for SCD, I think. White feet and hands: made for a fun intro. Very clever - and no mistakes. Cool.
A very good, fun dance. Bags of content. Daisy did very well: seemed to keep the synchro and the contra (?) going very well. Well performed, with good timing, on the whole. Footwork, altho' not 'snappy', was pleasing enough: to me, anyway. Managed to bring grace and elegance......to the Charleston, no less.
How much would I have to pay for a pair of legs like that? Perhaps they'd throw in the rest of the body, for free. Wouldn't that be nice? All right. Pipe down, at the back. I'm allowed to say things like that. I'm a girl.
I like Daisy. I hope the judges give her good marks.
So pleased. All four judges loved it. OK Craig. You can take your hat and coat off now.
8; 8; 8; 8 = 32.

Laura and Joe Varney. Jive.

They were introduced. We saw the VT. Then we were reminded about Laura's injured ankle, and that she wouldn't be dancing tonight. Disappointment all round. Especially for Joe Varney: he said it was his favourite dance.

Danny and Oti. Rumba.

Lovely dance. Danny is, indeed, fortunate that he is partnered with such a mesmerising dancer. I had to watch it again, so I could focus on him - quite difficult.
Second viewing. Danny's effort could have been smoother, for me. It lacked the effortless fluidity, that we have all come to expect. Oh, we have been spoilt, haven't we?
See what the judges think......On the whole, they liked it. But I can't believe that Craig agreed with me. Or may be, on this occasion, it was I, who was agreeing with him. Oh dear. We can't have that.
8; 9; 9; 9 = 35.

Claudia and AJ. Samba. To "a disco-vibe"

Fast and furious: too fast, imo. And a very complicated routine. Hardly time to do one thing, then it's on to the next one: from start to finish. Claudia did well to keep up. And she did: for most of the time. She looked slightly uncertain, at times. But when AJ got her in hold, he just swept her round: like a broom. My hero! Twelve years of athletics training, to her core: undone in four days. Impressive. Hip action quite good, considering.
Overall: a very good effort. Hope the judges give her credit.......And they did. So pleased.
8; 7; 8; 9 = 32.

Re the Leaderboard, at the end of my report. Ed and Katya are at the bottom, with a score of 18. Therefore their points should have read: 3, not 30.

Thanks for all the reviews everyone.

Really enjoyed Monkseal and the two comments below, especially Carl's review of the dances. I had not realised that it was the same samba music as Matt and Aliona?

Looking across Twitter, the DF, DS etc, there are a lot of people, not just us crazy obsessive Jaliona fans, who are finding this series a bit lacking and not believing the hype about some of the dances and couples. TPTB and judges string pulling has also been commented on a lot.

A couple of other comments from last night's show:

I thought Natalie looked really, really lovely. She and Greg at least look like they like each other.

I thought the interview with Giovanni was embarrassing. He looked so uncomfortable, sounded very unconvincing, stood there with his hands stuck in his pockets. As Hannah alluded to, he appears to have lost a few fans this year (Marion Keynes for example- and yes, she really is very too the point.)

Still wondering who on earth thought the ventriloquist was a good idea.

I think Tess has stopped saying 'Look, a standing ovation', presumably because everyone gets one and the audience are told to stand up?

Having said all that, X Factor is so much worse...

ETA, thanks Korky for the photo. Always a nice way to start the day.

BIB Is this me Hannah01 or there is a Hannah elsewhere on the thread. It confuses me sometimes cos I think "well I never said that!!"

Great pick up on all of your other points Jayfan. So it isn't just us thinking this is a strange series.

Yep, they are always like that She "takes agin" (her spelling) both celebs and pros and is very vocal about it. Although she has a thing about Pasha, she also "takes agin" his partners, last year she was very much Team Glita until they got knocked out and then wanted K&K to win, I don't think she ever got J. She seems to like jazz hands and more "in yer face" dancing usually but it can be random.

As with you I agree with James Jordan, a sentence I never thought I would write Although as Jayfan has said, from the comments I've seen on social media and the media, it seems pretty universal that the judges manipulations, over-marking and over-praising of a couple of the celebs seem to be more pronounced this year and not going down too well. I have a feeling it is going to back fire spectacularly if they are not careful and their chosen 2 will end up together in the bottom 2 if they are not careful, be interesting who they would choose to keep.

ETA - but isn't there only the one and only original Hannah, all others are just pale imitations of you

Yesss!

Hello Rafferty,

re. your comment about Louise and Kevin's rumba

Spoiler
Yes there was something very familiar to me about that dance too. I thought some of it was very like Rachel and Vincent's rumba, which is one of the most memorable ones on Strictly, but without the passion of the original.

Great pick up on all of your other points Jayfan. So it isn't just us thinking this is a strange series.”

I sometimes see the name "hannah" on the MF, then realise it isn't you because it doesn't have the "01".

While some people seem to have gone off Giovanni, I am actually preferring his more professional approach this year. I couldn't be doing with all of the icky showmance rubbish last year.

Seem to have messed up the quoting bit above, but don't want to alter it any more in case I mess it up still further.

Hope you can get the message anyway.

Always a nice way to start the day.”

Oh the good old Matt and Aliona samba that is my favourite samba male or female of all time!! Blackpool went absolutely mad at the end of the routine it was a proper samba. They both looked quite stunning too so....

I also cannot believe some of Marian Keynes tweets. Very in your face to some people. Not that I'm an avid follower of hers so this may be the norm. I caught them in passing and won't be going there again.

ETA now read all of Jordans tweets and yes I agree with him on all of the celebs. What's all that about!!😞”

Agree Hannah - while not a fan of James - his tweets on the show are pretty much 'on point' I believe and he is right - scoring was very suspect last night.

Don't usually read James, but might wander over there and have a look. Agree about last night's scoring.

I've just come back from a drive to Plymouth and walk on the Hoe seafront. The air was ........bracing ........ to say the least! I did spot just the one person wearing shorts and a beanie, about 5 minutes from Theatre, but he was too far away to check out, and my dog was walking too slowly for me to catch up.

I doubt if it was J though. The walk looked wrong.

* Information for anyone seeing BIG on 5th November *

This could affect anyone who is coming to Plymouth by car.

On my little jaunt I saw quite a few notices on roads around and leading up to the Hoe that they would be closed to traffic from 4 pm to 9 pm on Bonfire Night. I know some people are staying in the general area as it's only about 5 minutes from the Theatre. It's likely to be really busy in Plymouth on that day

BIB 1. Next time you get a dog make sure it's a greyhound, not a chihuahua.

You mean that the guy in front wasn't walking like a caveman.

I know about the firework display, which is why I'm staying at the Travelodge next to the theatre. But as I don't know Plymouth and you're obviously fairly familiar with it, how likely is it that the road between the station and the theatre will be closed after 4pm as I will have to get a taxi?
