Hmmm. Teaching methods. Well, I think that very experienced pros like Aliona are pretty astute as to what will work with whom. In Jay's case, she had a willing, hardworking and respectful pupil who didn't rate himself at all. So she nurtured that tremendous talent and brought out the best in him. On the way, he also brought out the best in her. He said himself that they talked about 'the most pretentious stuff' for hours and hours, and he clearly felt really able to be his true self with her, and maybe she with him too. So it was a true partnership of mind and soul, as well as dance. I wasn't keen on Aliona before last year, so it was nice to see her softer side.
I wouldn't ever say that Jay wouldn't find another dance partner with whom to make magic, but it would be very different magic than with Aliona - that was really, really special.
Jay with Oti, I feel, may also have been a dance partnership with terrific potential. Of course, until we see them dance together we'll never know, and we won't have the ability to see how their partnership would develop. The thing about Jay is that he does seem to bring out the best in people, and in Oti's case, maybe her more gentle and playful side - we saw a bit of that in the clauditorium after the tango. I have no doubt they'd have been pretty sensational dance-wise - both are brilliantly talented, so I have no worries on that front. Their latin dances would be electric, I'm sure.
Talking about it with OH this morning, he said that the whole Strictly experience last year was like when you're working with a group of people and everybody clicks, you all work hard and have a blast doing it. Then, one by one, everybody moves on and things are never really the same again. I think that's possibly what J&A felt going back to dance their jive on Strictly this year. And it's what I think is missing from this year's show. None of the dancers seem to be particularly invested in any of the others, and it seems to be the same with those pros who aren't related, married or engaged to each other.
What I'm really looking forward to now is seeing Jay's theatrical debut. It may be coming a bit later than he'd hoped all those years ago at MADD, but everything he's picked up along the way will give him that much more to bring to the show.
It's interesting to see him with Diana, they seem to be developing a kind of teasing rapport. I loved her being so impressed with his ability to take life as it comes, and enjoy each moment for what it is before moving on to whatever may present itself in the future. That's a great attitude to have, as she said, and I agree wholeheartedly!
