Not odd at all! You make a very interesting point.
As someone who'd never heard of J or TW before Strictly, I too was surprised at the difference in demeanour between what I later found on YT and J in front of the fudges and in the Clauditorium. This confident, funny, intelligent and articulate man was being eroded by inconsistent judging and what appeared to be a rather hamfisted effort to hold back an extraordinary dancing partnership. It was like looking at two different people. It is testament to his strength of character that he rose above all the machinations to win on his own terms. And his influence on Strictly will be felt for a very long time to come. BIB 2 It must not be forgotten that SCD is Aliona's element and she certainly helped J bring his usual (TW) strengths to the fore by the end of the final. And yes they did it their way |

Huh, his only relationship at the moment is with Pringles. Well, now we know - thanks to the radio host. ![]() Yeah, I know, I signed off for a really long time. But in my defense that counts as news. ![]() *backs away slowly* |

And yes they did it their way Yes, Aliona was great for Jay, but he was great for her too. He really softened her edges and, I think, made her fall in love with dancing all over again. As I've said before, it's a partnership too good to lose. ETA Just listened to the interview - there's one happy man! Confident, funny and in a great place by the sound of it. And not in a relationship. Stamped. Official. He's standing very firmly on his own two talented feet ..... And Guinness is vegetarian, so all's well in BirdWorld!

Apologies for cropping and I hope I haven't deleted any salient points : Quote:
Here is my effort at a first review,I have read all your wonderfull reviews and I am sure I couldn't do anything any better. So I would just like to add my thoughts on Jays j------y for amnesty week.
I am no expert in technic but to my mind it isn't just the steps that make a perfect dance but the people who dance them. Jaliona were the perfect combination ,which I don't think we shall see the likes of again on strictly. I do think Jay will be A- MA-Z- ING. In big. Because as we all know, he does like to supprise people.. Quote:
Morning all
I was feeling very lost yesterday teatime, and I posted on Twitter "Missing You" (about Becks) And someone said.....he will always be with you - close your eyes and he is with you And, suddenly from nowhere it started to rain. And thunder. And I thought of this, which a kind soul had passed to me on Monday on Twitter .... https://flic.kr/p/H6NxvQ And, though it made my cry again, I knew it was him saying: All is well mum. I am here. Quote:
ITT
Jay looked incredibly nervous on this ITT. He was sitting so close to Ali that it was almost as if he was trying to hide behind her. It was obvious that they were getting on really well and enjoying getting to know one another though. And this is where we learnt about the 'Caveman' - he was so embarrassed. Costume And what a revelation it was. OMG that teddy bear/ lion/ caveman had transformed into an incredibly handsome man in a single haircut. Music I really like the song and it was perfect for their Waltz. I've just realised there's been very few times I've said that in relation to music choices. Dance He was dashing and debonair, with such easy grace and elegance. The feel of the dance is romantic and dreamy, like floating on a cloud. Judges However the judges comments were wonderful. Darcey commented on the romance and that J could be one special dancer. Len's comment would have been better if he hadn't wasted time with his lame joke. But he was 'excited'. Bruno talked about footwork and floorwork, and it's at this point you hear Len agree and say 'Everything'. He should have said that in his comments! Well CRH - was quite funny really. Clauditoruim & scores Wonderful support from the Clauditorium. The scores I suppose were very good. Excellent for week two. For me it's worth more but then I think I'm blinded by the beauty and feel of the dance and know nothing about technique. . ![]() Quote:
To be honest, I haven't found it so difficult to reconcile the two.
If you are a person who lacks self-belief or self-esteem, it can take a lot of time to become comfortable in a new situation. As far as I'm concerned, the problem with Strictly was the failure to understand or act on the need to nurture. I want to see a programme like that work to bring the best out of people, not make it into "survival of the fittest" - that's what BB and I'm a Celebrity are for (both of which I loathe) Speedy - thank you for that link. Love that performance from Jay - I like his voice. It is more distinctive than the others in the band. And is it me or did Nathan have to turn every live performance into a showcase for his own vocals? Quote:
BIB
That struck me too - how different Jay was on ITT to Strictly. He came across very well indeed on ITT - except for the one toddler choice of words occasion. Jay did seem to be a mixture of boy/man, and there was a lot of talk about him becoming a man on the show. Aliona straight away accepted Jay as he was and basically began projecting that he doesn't need to change - you really ought to get to know what he is like. I eventually said she basically set up The Jay Nature Reserve. It was interesting after they won, that Jay said he thought he was still the same person as at the start - just a lot better at being on Strictly. I think Aliona's approval and belief in Jay is one of the most valuable things to Jay from Strictly. He seemed to under-value himself and have some doubts. He does do very well interacting with others, but hopefully he has the same belief in himself now that Aliona has in him. Quote:

Amnesty Homework
I think I've done most before so have just included a short form for those:
Cha-Cha-Cha : Better than the 'wooden spoon' group dance - promise Waltz : Beautiful, elegant, perhaps a bit hesitant Jive : Jaw dropping Quickstep : Looked really good to me, apart from the obvious oopsies, what do I know? Paso Doble : Good for Aliona, equal roles and comparable performance levels. Swoon American Smooth : Bit gimmicky, but I liked it. And blow you-know-who, I could see facial expressions even under the make-up Argentine Tango : First time I've appreciated a greasy dago look, and the lack of gauchos was a bit disturbing ![]() Foxtrot : Beautiful up to the last little trip. Someone deserved to be flayed and left on an anthill and it wasn't Jay Salsa : Never wanted to go to Benidorm, but this could have persuaded me. He blended with the pros. Tango : There was fire. No ice, which I could have used, but plenty of fire. Quickstep-a-thon : Should have been longer and they should have won Rumba : Don't Blink (with apologies to TT). (aside - Aljaz always looks so proud of him) Viennese Waltz : Beautifully lyrical. J shouldn't doubt that he can act. A bit slow for a VW but given the music, so smooth. Perhaps with faster music, faster steps (which we know he can do), Len wouldn't have been able to pick up on the feet so much and Darcey wouldn't have been able to comment on his being 'comfortable' - which I think was a fair comment. Charleston : Woohoo! Cool! Proper swivels, fast, funny, if not for the awkward ending 10s all round - no jellybabies though . Another comment (from Len) about Jay being perhaps too relaxed. With hindsight, at this point, judges seem still to be on board - weird. Random thought, I wonder if Max was in on the routine when he mentioned A turning J's world round! Quickstep : Didn't Jay enjoy himself! But then Len sets the tone with a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp. Then the scores - all good Showdance : At the time, worrying about the slightly sour note, wondered if it would be spectacular enough. I loved it, loved watching them love it. On re-viewing, love it even more and can see just how much impact there was - I wonder if the fudges were given another chance to view it they would understand better what was going on. Bottom line, they were scoring based on what they thought they OUGHT to have seen. As we've all said already, either give rules or accept with a free mind what the dancers chose to do. Walk a mile in another man's shoes! Loved the reception on the Clauditorium, everyone encouraging them (specially PA!) So many things I didn't notice on the night, or notice in the right way, all down to the snippy attitude going on. Aliona and Jay both a bit tearful, I felt, Claudia determined they should know how good it was, Tristan grinning away ... Paso Doble : Double swoon. Watching the two pasos close together made me realise JUST how much Jay had developed, all round, throughout the series Have watched the final with mostly just Jay and Aliona's bits, and it's so much nicer! I don't want to remember that there was injustice and impoliteness, and doing this last bit of the review has helped me wash away some of the sadness I felt at the time. The judges by and large were actually fairly supportive of Jaliona (show dance apart), the other pros and contestants really were all together and supportive of each other. Claudia left no-one in any doubt of her feelings! Gleb & Aljaz - Giovanni, Guido - not a dry eye in the house ![]() If I were lucky enough to be at a KD performance - I think I'd like to see the rumba and the jive, as being fairly contained dances and not ending up in the orchestra pit as someone said. Then, two new ones? Whiffle - don't know why you think my pie chart was better than yours, but Excel is so easy to work with! should I add - other spreadsheets are available

Everyone adds something interesting and makes the thread richer. There was a lot to appreciate before and Jaliona is still rollin'. ![]() I've learned many things and see some things differently as a result. My only issue is keeping up with all the posting, so sometimes I have to skim some bits. |

I hope to supprise some people. Is what Jay said in one of his first interview, and didn't he do just that. In all the years watching Strictly I don't think there has been a pairing to match Jaliona or a ,celeb,' to match Jay. He seems a delightfull young man with bags of charm and charisma all part of his personality that CRH missed . And with Alionas training he danced beautifully. I couldn't choose a favourite dance I loved them all, even the ones with oopsiies were better than some of those the judges gave 10 s for. I am no expert in technic but to my mind it isn't just the steps that make a perfect dance but the people who dance them. Hi All,
Just caught up on the interview. It's so lovely to hear his voice. You could hear him smiling throughout. Got a big grin pasted on my face now. He's never bland, always really charming and friendly. Fingers crossed he does lots more interviews soon. 😀😍 Loving the reviews everyone, especially those who haven't attempted them before. I hope you'll do more! Xx |
