Oh yes, I kept him very snug and warm indeed... 😚

I made sure he didn't use his voice at all too: sign language and actions only... 😚

Bearing in mind that we all see things differently, I thought that review was quite fair and objective. And full marks for her adding the bit about Jay having a cold. (Possibly due to Korky's intervention, as much as Jay fans taking perceived offence at her comment . )

Gary Wilmot said in the first Radio Devon interview that Jay was a surprise and he certainly was. His acting was really good – it helps that the character is a great fit for his personality and he is able to use a lot of his usual expressions and gestures to flesh out the role, but he really does convince in the role. He has good chemistry with Diana Vickers and Gary Wilmott and particularly with the boy playing his best friend Billy. The voice coach also did a great job with his New York accent.

The stage set is amazing, with a combination of three revolves for scene changes, video screens at the back of the set for backgrounds and two houses that slide in from the wings on either side. The piano works really well, illuminating at the front of the stage.

The whole show is really high energy, with some spectacular production numbers, especially the piano scene, ‘crossing the line’ which closes the first half and coffee black. Jay really comes to life in the dance routines.

The theatre was full and the audience (which wasn’t all crazed Jalionistas!) loved it, with applause and whoops after each of the songs and a standing ovation at the end. Jay even got some wolf whistles at his second appearance, stripped down to his underpants (and with some thick foundation covering his tattoos). The whole cast seemed to be enjoying it. I see that Jessica has tweeted about the audience reaction

https://twitter.com/jessica7martin/s...57164012441600

and also retweeted jnb7’s picture of the post show threadmeet in celebration

https://twitter.com/Janetnbecks/stat...40618468823040.

That’s it for now – I’m sure I’ll think of more in response to other reviews when they are posted.”

BIB - My first thought was ' undercrackers - where's Korky'.
Sadly, I can't wolf-whistle, otherwise I would have joined in.
I must pay more attention, because I actually thought that was Jay's first appearance as I remember thinking 'well that's the way to make your first appearance on stage'. (i.e. if you can do that, then you can do anything.)

What I can say is that James McGuiness has a lot to answer for. I've never fangirled in my life and here I am, Wembley , O2 x2, Wimbledon x2, and now BIG😳
I'm not a regular theatre goer, nor a musicals fan, so my expectations were low as is my cringe threshold . BUT the staging was clever and effective, the cast were excellent- didn't cringe once, and Jay blew me away, he WAS Josh, he totally inhabited the character and for the most part, I forgot he was Jay- until he danced, of course😍People, let me reassure you that his feet are just as fast, he's smooth, slick, breathtaking,
FAB-U-LOUS

There is a particular moment, and those who have seen it, and those who are going to see it ,will know when I mean, I was set to rush the stage and make sure that little boy in that big body was safe and ok. Utterly believable, drawn in to that moment, breaking my heart😢
I was happy to go and just support Jay , but it was so much more. I think the highest accolade I can pay , is simply to say that if it comes to the West End, I shall go again. It is a great BIG success for him and I hope it's a commercial one too.
Take confidence young man, you did good , and I for one, feel very proud of him.”

BIB 1 - Me too. And strictly speaking am a little too old to do so now. But what the heck - if my kids think I've lost my marbles, tough. (Though I can reassure them that I haven't. ) I'm o2, Wimbledon x2, Big (Plymouth) x4, and (hopefully) Edinburgh x3. Though I probably have some way to go to match the numbers of jayfan and jnb_7.

BIB 2 - The last professional theatre production I saw was Miss Saigon about twenty years ago (though I've seen a musical performance by a solo artist since) but I have a feeling that when BIG goes to the West End I'll be going every week. Well, as long as Jay and Diana are in it.

BIB 3 - Seconded.

I'll add further comments after fridgesoup has finished posting her review(s) because she's already said a lot of what I was going to.

I love this unforeseen side-effect of a dance partnership that we all fell in love with a year ago. What's wrong with a bit of silliness - haven't we earned it? There's far too much sensibleness if you ask me! Why shouldn't we go to multiple performances of a show we enjoy, and spend a bit of money on it (so long as you can still afford the mortgage !)? How often do you treat yourselves? And meeting up with fellow Jalionistas and having a good time - shock, horror! How dare they!

You are all lucky in that you can get to go all over the country seeing the shows. Being the age I am and having a husband like mine, it can make for awkward situations at home if I say "Bye now, I am off to see someone young enough to be my grandson dancing in a musical at the other end of the country or even in another country"!

Thank you to everybody for the lovely reports. I am looking forward to the next chapters and new ones and thank you for the links to reviews and pics. I am looking forward to see the show in the WE.

P.S. I bought a ticket to see Tom in Grease. They are going on tour and will be performing near where I live. Should be a lot of fun.

It was in his first scene, but his first appearance was in little-Josh-sized comic book pyjamas. I remember thinking - ooh, I thought he said his first appearance was in his underpants . He then hid in the wardrobe when his mum appeared, took them (the pyjamas, in case anyone gets too excited) off to give to her to wash off and reappeared stripped down. Even more !

I know what you mean - I am lucky that I live in London so it is easier to travel out and OH and I often travel round the country to go to the theatre, so it is easier for me to persuade him that going to Plymouth to see a musical (no real mention of fan-dom, just 'meeting some friends off the thread') is just like going to Newcastle next January to see 'The Play That Goes Wrong'. He still thinks I am bonkers though

ETA - That's why it is so nice that everyone posts and shares their experiences - it's the next best thing.

Well remembered. I knew we'd seen the teeny jammies, but couldn't remember how/when they were removed. That wardrobe didn't look big enough for a costume change. I expect there was some clever quick release built in!!

You see, I can't remember things properly anyway. That's why I need someone clever like you and janetshep to comment first, and then I can add my little bits.
From where I was sitting I couldn't see the size of the cupboard so I'll have to report back about that at the weekend because I'm sitting on the right-hand side of the theatre for the Saturday performances.

I admit that I am very lucky in that I have found (through the kind people on this thread) that theatres and arenas nowadays have (even though they may have some limitations) to be accessible to people with mobility problems, otherwise I'd be sitting at home going 'I wanna be there'. It's given me the confidence to go to places I would never have thought I'd be going to this time last year.
My hubby would have looked on in amusement and bemusement at me saying 'I want to go to Wimbledon/Plymouth/wherever' but would willing have let me go. His only criteria would have been that he didn't have to go with me.

Good point!

It is also a new show, whereas some of the others have had years to build a return audience.

I'm sure Jay and Aliona will have some reunion - with what has happened since they last danced together. A great overlap of their excellent past lives and their bright futures.

Monkseal's full blog of the weekend's performances is up and is very funny as usual.

I particularly liked his comments on Danny's acting surprised in his VT:

This all gives Danny a great opportunity to show off his Hollyoaks Surprised Faces acting. It’s like one of those Youtube videos where someone does a magic trick for a Labrador Retriever - accompanied by screen shots to prove it!

Technology's come on in the 20+ years since my last musical!

The opening scene sees....

Spoiler
a two storey suburban house move in from each side of the stage. Young Josh's bedroom with his bunkbeds is upstairs while Mrs Baskin is multi-tasking downstairs. A similar scene plays out across the street in Billy's house and Billy and Josh speak to each other from their bedroom windows. It's very cleverly done I won't describe the whole story (can't rely on my memory anyway, but there's some great acting and dancing from the youngsters including some really fun group numbers).

The Little Josh we got on opening night had a mop of curly hair and was a great match for Jay

As everyone knows from the film, Josh has reasons to want to be big and so when he come across the Zoltar machine he makes his wish. Nothing happens of course and eventually he leaves the carnival (in town for one night only) and goes home to bed.

Often when I go to the theatre, it takes me 10 or 15 minutes to get over the fact that I'm watching real people doing make-believe on a stage in front of me. I usually feel a bit of second-hand embarrassment until I become immersed. Occasionally that moment never comes . On Saturday the show kicks off with such energy and vigour and everyone is so on point, I never have that moment of doubt and am involved from the first moment!

Yay!

The scene changes romp along and the stage transforms before our eyes every few minutes (it really is so very slick); the singing and dancing is great; the kids are excellent - and 'kids-doing-the-acting-thing' is another thing that usually makes me twitchy! - there are laughs - so much so, that by now I'm so thoroughly immersed, I've actually forgotten we're there to see Jay....

Jay? Who he?!!

So in the scene that takes place 'next morning'...

Spoiler
...the two houses are back and both boys are asleep while their mothers are making breakfast; yelling up at their sons to get out of bed; bring their dirty laundry down; hurry up for school etc etc and I'm just sitting there smiling, blithely enjoying myself, when suddenly it dawns on me that the 'boy' under the duvet ...in the flipping bunk bed....Has.Got.To.Be......JAY!!!!!

Ooooh, crap-crap-crappity-crap!!

But needless to say, Jay plays the dazed-and-confused just-woken-up feels-kinda-funny Josh perfectly . The whole scene is great comedy (with his Mum threatening to barge in any moment to get his dirty laundry).

Poor Jay. His first acting scene ever and he's in front of about a thousand people wearing nothing but a pair of little boy's cartoon underpants. Very tight underpants! There's some slapstick with Mrs Baskin coming in and Josh jumping into the wardrobe; him trying to disguise his voice etc etc and he sings his first song - about being Big!! He has great comic timing and some of his facial expressions are priceless (but so Jay at the same time). I'm thinking especially of where, with some trepidation, he dares to look down into his underpants and then looks out to the audience, gulps and squeaks: 'I'm Big!' with a look of horror and fear on his face

Our boy can act!! Phe-yew-eee!!

Spoiler
Josh finally pulls some of his Dad's clothes out of the laundry basket and escapes the house and goes to enlist Billy's help to turn him back. They need to find another Zoltar machine and head to NYC to the Bureau for Zoltar machines and carnivals ......who will be able to get back to them in four weeks time!!

He's going to need money, and a job and somewhere to live!!!

For now though, Billy has to go and he leaves Josh alone on a bench in the big city.

I really think this is the best scene in the whole show (at least if you're Jaywatching). He sings as he tries to be brave, while having close encounters with a selection of New York's more interesting street life . His voice is perfect for this number. He's alone and afraid and he just wants to go home. He holds the audience in his hands and you could hear a pin drop. We all felt his vulnerability and I don't think it was just me shed a tear.

Crikey.

Think that's it for tonight. Might have more to say tomorrow ”

Hello all! Just catching up! Thank you Fridgesoup for your great review - Cant wait to see BIG in Dublin...Eeeh a month today!!!!
I have to read more reviews still as reading backwards (as usual) - saw all the great tweets and pics on Saturday night from interval and end of show. Delighted for all who got to have JAYmeets and JAYhugs. I know some got to meet Jessica too which must have been fab too! Saw some very positive tweets from last night too and looking forward to reading your report from last night too Cat09

We knew about Jay's dancing and singing but it is Brilliant to hear about Jays great acting ability & owning the role of Josh too- all I can think is Craig Who??? ..
Hope West End dates will be announced soon - seemingly Wind in the Willows has just been announced for West-End and it was in Plymouth not too long ago.
Back later to read more

Thanks fridgesoup and all the other reviewers!

Very much appreciate the use of spoilers too!

After Craig's moaning about Jay's lack of facial expression, it's going to surprise a lot of people just how good an actor Jay is.
Sure, it's a role that suits him to an extent, but to be able to draw people in to where they feel part of the experience is what people want from a visit to the theatre.

It's great news too that the production is so well produced and is so slick right from the start - and to think, they will even get better as the show runs. It is a production that will always appeal to a whole family, so there is potential for a long run.

But yes, the essential point is that it was a boring (and bad-tempered) final due mainly to the producers, and the judges, not the dancers. I really wish (but I'm not really holding out much hope) that they change the rules this year. No more of this "let's repeat your worst dance". Who wants to see the worst dances again? Or if they want to see whether they've improved in that discipline, get them to choreograph a new routine to different, and appropriate, music. Didn't they used to do that at one point? Although maybe not in the final. And I think the old idea of one ballroom, one Latin makes eminent sense. Viewers choice instead of couple's choice would have meant Jaliona would not have been able to duck the jive.

Personally, I would actually be happy if they scrapped the showdance. Instead, have one ballroom, one Latin (to new choreography and music), and viewers favourite. That would give enough new to be interesting and show progress in a discipline, and allow for a return of a favourite, so new and the best of the old. I know it's not gonna happen, but I can dream!

Trouble is, they see the big viewing figures and think that means they are doing something right, so ignore all the FB they are getting. More and more, they move towards DWTS, ignoring that that programme is failing.

I pray that this year, we get a final that truly celebrates 3 months of competition and achievement.

ETA And yes, let's scrap that frikkin' dance off!”

Just catching up, and I agree with you toad. I would also scrap the " whatever -a-thon " it's obviously included to give the judges/PTB another way of manipulating the leader board and changing the scores for those that are the favoured ones ie the Cliftons

The Beeb have been, for quite a while, bringing people over from US, that have been involved in DWTS. That is why we have too many themes, top many props, inappropriate music etc. The problem is that as you said Toad, although DWTS used to be very popular its ratings are now falling off the cliff. Strictly's PTB only see the 10 million viewing figures, but ignore the fact that as X Factor is so dire that its ratings gave fallen so dramatically, strictly hasn't any real opposition now. As you say they aren't listening to the viewers concerns ( a very normal BBC trait ) one day they will kill the goose that lays the golden egg

On a much lighter and much happier note, I think it's bliddy marvellous how well Big is going. I am so happy ( and CRH too, not ) that Jay has such great acting skills. I am really thrilled for him. He must have been so nervous as its his name first on the billboards and he is the star so its a lot of responsibility. I think it's great for him, to go out " on his own " and be a success. Strictly was a very big step for him and even with all his self doubt and nerves he nailed it. Being the star of Big, is a much bigger step, even more out of his comfort zone, but it seems he is nailing it too Very proud of him :

Thank you to everyone posting their lovely reviews. Very grateful and jealous wish I didn't have to wait until the West End

OT no longer on crutches and having the stitches out tomorrow. Yippee😄 Hopefully will be able to drive again soon🙏

Dfer Glad to hear things are improving, and that you'll get your wheels back soon!

Yes, isn't it lovely to see J succeeding in his own right? This is the first time it's all about him, and he's smashing it. I wouldn't mind betting that both DVO and Borewood are gnashing their bleached teeth about that.

He's such a mountain of talent, with so very much to offer and it's nice to see that being acknowledged now.

I do find it a bit odd that none of TW boys have tweeted their encouragement yet. I'm sure they've probably done it privately, but a bit of public recognition wouldn't go amiss, in my view.

Why would Denise (or even Craig ) not be delighted Jay's doing well? Didn't Jay tweet about her being funny in the brief period she was involved in BIG! ? I would have thought they'd probably have got on well. Is there some reason - relative to Jay - to think badly of her that I've missed?

She tweeted a nice response to Aliona's baby news, btw

Yes fridge soup don't think there is any reason why DVO or Craig should not be delighted that J is smashing it in Big,
J did say he got on with all the judges behind the scenes, and a lot of what the judges say is only for the programme.,I think Js words were a bit of pantomine
Also think he got on well with DVO ,in her brief stay, sure she'd wish them all well.
So pleased Big will be the success we all hoped for j,and it will run and run.in the WE.

Damien was on Twitter earlier, hinting about something "cool" re BIGtheMusical. I wonder if this could be news about a WE run?

Also, a couple of tweets about press night, so I think that must be today. Best of luck to everyone involved in the production!

Hello, everyone!!

I'm back after a much failed first day at a new job. Imagine what massive failure it was that I quit after only 4 hours. The place was horrible, definitely not what they said at the interview. I'm unemployed but calmed for some reason. I guess I needed a break after working non stop for over 6 years

I'm so glad some of you got to meet Jay... and I was wondering if some of you can do me a small favour

Vale (the other half of MD) is going to see BIG all the way from Slovenia on the 10th and I know it would mean the world to her if he gets to meet Jay. I know loads of people have met him just by waiting outside of the venue, but she's a bit shy and she doesn't think she'll have the chance to meet him. I really want this to happen for her and I believe she completely deserves it... so I was wondering if, in case you're going to the same show she is, can you please help her make her dream come true? It would mean a lot!

If you're willing to help, please let me know <3

It was J's Dad who tweeted that J had said 'Miss VO is fun'. The day before she departed.

DVO wasn't keen to even acknowledge J's presence in the cast of BIG when interviewed by Lorraine. His name didn't come into until LK mentioned it. I think there's more to her departure than meets the eye, and I bet she's really regretting it now, although she wasn't right for the part and Jessica is a much more competent and better fit.

Borewood - don't think he's that magnanimous. He had it in for J from the first moment of Strictly, and like all accomplished bullies, tried to laugh it off as 'joking'. Except he wasn't. Just look at J's face after the Final Paso.
