Thanks Lola. I think I've seen the video you're talking about and have a feeling TW appeared on Strictly twice - singing the two songs you mention.

What made me think about Arlene is her connection with MADD, and I wonder if as patron she may sit in on auditions from time to time? As I sad earlier, I think it's very easy to get sucked into J's version of his ability, not the reality!

Thank you.

I love the bit where J is talking gleefully about starfish/jellyfish at Plymouth National Marine Aquarium, and Gary grins and says " He IS Josh Baskin".

I'm particularly pleased that the reviewer praised Jay's acting and dancing, I bet he'll be tickled pink at that. If you look at her tweets on the sidebar, she clearly adored the show immensely.”

Lovely to see all theatre goers were enjoying the show.”

I, too, thought it was a good review. It was good of her to add the comment, regarding Jay's cold. And I agree: not all critics would do the same. Good for her.

ETA looking forward to your report, Cat.”

BIB. There is a different blog, published in another place, by someone else. I would, ordinarily, really like to read it: as I know, therein, lies intelligence and great wit. But, sadly, in my view, this wit is rendered blunt, by the clumsy similes, and the elaborately dressed brickbats, used to belabour the hapless contestants. It's such a shame, when the review appears to be more about the reviewer, than the reviewed. I see nothing wrong in using any wit we can muster, whether for praise, or criticism. But why not gently spoon it on, rather than slice it? But then, I suppose, it all comes down to perception. Some people might think, that I am absolutely brutal in my reviews. I hope not, as I certainly don't mean to be.

ETA. As you can see from the above quotes, taken from quite a few pages back, it's taken me a while to catch up with you all.

I agree that this particular blogger can be a bit full on at times. There's so much packed in that good points can get swamped. Writing in this style is fun to do, but it does pay to remember the original intent and know when to rein it in before you lose the reader's interest.

CatO's review today really gives a flavour of what it was like to be at the show, and a very honest assessment of it's quality. Very readable and very entertaining, as your reviews always are too.

Hi everyone
More great tweets today about Big and one great one about Jay - said he was mesmerising.

Thanks for the review Cato. I am deliberately not reading it as I have a ticket for the Saturday matinee.
May not make it but as selling fast took the risk.

A feature about Big tonight on local south west news progprogramme according to Twitter. Did anyone see it?

If you want to skip some of it, "Jay for Strictly" continues at around 30min 32 seconds: https://youtu.be/Bea-4f3ss_0?t=30m32s

He found her at her writing desk
Lost in a reverie
Of pausing at a crossroad
And a poignant memory.

Should she take the road to him
Or should she turn about?
Would he be waiting at the end?
Would she be happier without?

She long appraised her dilemma,
Never acting on a whim.
The hardest thing she ever did
Was to turn away from him.

There is something I want to add to it.

Many of us have remarked on Jay's ability to emote a dance through his body. The same is so very true of his acting in BIG. He's the big kid in his speaking and in his singing but he's also so perfectly in character in his movement, even when he's dancing. My friend, who doesn't know a great deal about Jay, remarked specifically on it.”

Because he's so self-deprecating, it's easy to forget that he won a scholarship to MADD, and that would have been entirely on merit.

I often wonder if Arlene Phillips had any say in suggesting him for Strictly? She's a patron of MADD.”

You are absolutely right about his ability to portray emotion through his body and his acting ability. I wonder whether he found it easier in Strictly to do the dances that had a strong character to them, rather than the ones where he just had to be 'romantic'? Not only the jive, which was a real stand-out dance where he was actually playing a character, but also the AT/tango where he had to be moody, rather than just another version of himself.
