Thank you for the update jayfan
BIB understandable - last dances with Ali for the foreseeable future. Their partnership has been the catalyst for all the good things happening now.

Spoiler
Opening Pro/Am number - Gorgeous. Absolutely fab. Possibly the best we've ever had, and certainly the best number involving the pros since that lovely waltz on the opening show. Shame it all went downhill from there....

And now we come on to - POSSIBLY THE MOST OVERMARKED BLACKPOOL STRICTLY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. EVER!! #FACT

And you can pretty much take it as read that all faults were ignored - after all, it's Blackpool, they want to make out everything is brilliant. Camerawork was even more appalling than usual - we could not see their feet, we could not see their faces, they were obscured by backing dancers, they used overhead shots where we should have had body shots, body shots when they should have used aerial etc. etc.

1. Claudia & AJ Jive: she looked really nervous here. Made some mistakes, looked really heavy and sometimes out of balance, her turns were far too careful. Pretty poor in all. Judges chose to ignore all this and just refer to a teeny mistake at the beginning. Ridiculous mark of 36 then left them nowhere to go.

2. Ore & Jo VW: it took them 38s to start waltzing (but this was then catered to by them being allowed a longer dance than usual). As we're back to ballroom, I as usual found it difficult to watch Ore and not Jo, especially since he seems to be doing as many facial expressions as Rinder lately. The waltz itself was a bit skippy. Final fleckerl that went on forever and I really enjoyed as a piece of choreography, except that Ore had a really weird head position. Jo did a spinning section in their previous waltz too and I don't think it flatters Ore overmuch. Jo looks like she's spinning on ice, whereas Ore looks a bit disjointed. Craig gave a realistic 8, the other judges went insane.

3. Twimsy Paso: This could have been really good. If she'd had a personality transplant. At the beginning of the routine, she just marched down the steps with no hip movement to give it sass. Probably a bit afraid of falling. Her Paso face was ludicrous, and for some reason, she kept looking down. However, she gave good skirtage and for once, I did see her punch moves through her entire body in a more convincing manner. So I'm going to be contrary and say this is my favourite Twimsy dance.

4. Doti Charleston: Extremely good. Danny made some minor mistakes in a couple of places, going out of sync. However, the rest of the routine probably made up for it. Personally, because of the mistakes I would only have given it a 9, but 4 10s were the only possibility given previous marking. Would probably have got a 40 on an ordinary show too depending how grouchy the judges were feeling. Again, I'm contrary - I didn't like it very much. It felt curiously joyless. For me, nothing has topped his QS so far.

5. Ed & Katya jive: Once again, Katya packed in jive content, even though it was not danced particularly well. However, on occasion Ed really did go for it and was up on his toes and jumping.

6. Greg & Nat QS: (to "Born to Handjive", because that makes a lot of sense). I thought this was great for a sportsman NDF. Predictably, very quick across the floor, but also much neater and more poised than he had appeared in rehearsal. The main thing that went wrong was the flying leap which for some reason he did really apathetically. Judges much too harsh I thought - he could have got more credit for his improvement.

7. Rinder & Oksana Salsa: Rob being hilarious snarking on the VT. The beginning was a little iffy with some ridiculously overdancing backing dancers and a slightly botched lift (backing dancers and Rindy) causing him to wobble a bit. However, otherwise, I thought this was excellent - he had a lovely casual natural salsa action. I think Oksana would have done better to choreograph more of this into the routine, leaving out some of the other unnecessary moves. The judges moaned about him going off time a bit towards the end but I didn't see anything of the sort. And of course, they said nothing about the unusually good action.

I don't know why they gave Rinder the pimp slot this week - it would have been more natural to give it to Danny - the show felt really front-loaded (the best 4 dancers, at least on paper, went first, leaving the end for the weaker ones)

Yes he was fine about DVO and her training. Never mentioned that. And hadn't Dr Pammy had some training of the B&L variety? Or am I misremembering?

The only problem I have with his little tweety comments on SCD this year is that I find I am agreeing with him. Heaven help me I'm turning into a Jordan😨

Um... no.

If J was singing tonight his larynx must have recovered - just in time to record his Big part. Pun very much intended.

Tales from Edinburgh

So after a very early start but a very easy train journey, I arrived in Edinburgh on time.

Nelliek rang me as I arrived and we agreed to meet by the Theatre Royal after I had dropped off a card and pressie for Jay and Aliona (I am such a fangirl now) at the stage door. Following Nelliek and other's instructions, I easily made my way to the theatre and found the stage door. I dropped off the card etc and then started chatting to a couple of young TW fans ( I am not sure how old they were but I could easily have been their mum). We swopped stories of how lovely Jay was and how easy or not it had been to meet him. They very kindly didn't look at me as if I was a mad middle aged woman but as if it was quite normal to have these kind of conversations with random strangers who happen to be mad about Jay. Speedy then rang me and I had a couple of other calls delaying my departure. Based on what had happened earlier in the week, a meeting with Jay did not sound likely and I was about to head back to the pub, when one of the girls spotted what she thought might be Jay walking down the hill to the stage door. The big clue was the scarf ( so Jay, if you are reading this and want to be anonymous, ditch the scarf). As he got nearer we could see that it definitely was Jay. As you will see from the photo, he was suitably dressed for the weather - no shorts! He looked lovely, as I hope you can see from the photo, much less tired than last week. I mentioned that I had seen him in Plymouth last week and thanked him again for Jnb's message. I talked to him about Big and told him how much I enjoyed it, especially Coffee Black. He said he was really enjoying Big but it had been hard work and lots to learn but he was getting better, similar to the things he said last week. He said his favourite bits were with Diana and with the kids but he loved it all. I asked for a photo and a hug and he, as always, obliged . Having wished him good luck for tonight, I then went back up the hill to the pub and found DD waiting by it. She was then followed by Speedy and Nelliek and we adjourned to the bar/cafe place in between the theatre and the pub.

As we were sitting there, Nelliek noticed Vincent arrive.
So spurred on by my Jaymeet, I went over, apologised for interrupting but said how much we had loved Jay and Aliona. He said he recognised me, which was kind as although I have seen Vincent a lot, I only spoke to him in Birmingham with Aliona.
I congratulated him on the baby news. I then revealed that I was a sad Twitter stalker by recognising his sister and niece and congratulated her on her recent dance competition win. Amazingly, they didn't start to avoid eye contact with a crazy woman and were all very, very lovely.

Whilst we were in the pub, Amelia and Kate arrived with Amelia's mum Michelle and her dad. All very lovely people.

As he left Vincent waved goodbye to us, I was busy talking but Nelliek noticed and waved back, then breaking out in excited squeals.

Having finished our drinks and food, we then went into the theatre.

To be continued...

Hellooooo! !!!!!! Right back at ya. Hope all is good.

Himself is well and truly miffed and will have to live on YT dances until The Grand Reunion Tour.
(If Clarkson and Co can have a Grand Tour then so can our couple.)

I may have sent a little tweet to that effect. 😜

Tales from Edinburgh Part 2

So, having found our seats, I spoke to the woman next to me, who having established that we were both there for Jay, asked if I was from DS! I introduced myself as Jayfan and she turned out to be Paddy from Twitter who is an avid reader of the thread. Meanwhile, Speedy was talking to the two ladies by her, one of also 'knew' us from DS and was another avid reader. ( Hello Pam and Christine👋. Lovely to meet you.) So, just in case we hadn't realised it, there are clearly a lot of people reading and enjoying this thread!

Also in the audience were Stella and her daughter(Jnb and Speedy met her at MK you may recall) and Linda (who Stella met at Wimbledon KD and who is now going with her to Dublin.) I think I may have taken a photo or too at this point.

And then the show started. It was a very lively and mostly appreciative audience and there was a lot of love for Jay and Aliona in the house. There had been some changes in the dancers. White trouser man was there (trousers even tighter than before if possible) but the girl who was the brilliant salsa/samba dancer wasn't. Jasmine T had already left in Manchester. I think there were less dancers but I may be wrong. The blonde dancer and the hiphop girl dancer (now with shorter hair) were still there and very good.

The routines were pretty much the same but instead of the Paso, Jay and Aliona did the VW. Jay had the black trousers and braces and white shirt. Aliona had a multi coloured pale pastel long floaty dress. They both looked so lovely. Aliona was absolutely beautiful - just blooming. Jay looked mighty fine and with slightly shorter hair, there was no need to mess with his lovely curls. As you may recall, I am not a big fan of the VW, so it is not one of the dances I know step by step (despite my homework earlier this week!). It looked pretty close to the original choreography to me. The stage was just about big enough to accommodate it. I thought it was lovely and much preferred it to the KD charleston and salsa. Our seats in the stalls in Row L were very placed to admire Jay's lovely lines and his beautiful, beautiful arms.

To be continued..

Those clips have confirmed for me how much I enjoyed last year’s Blackpool show and how much I didn’t enjoy this year’s.

I agree with TT's review of the evening. I’ve really lost it with the producers this year (or they’ve really lost it in terms of producing a good show). I can’t understand why they put Ore, Louise and Danny on in the first half and peaked the show in the middle, leaving it to only go downhill from there on. The marking was mad - for the first three dances, I was really grateful for Craig providing a minor touch of sanity, as I’m not really sure the other judges were watching the same dances as me.

The whole show veered wildly being completely brown, badly filmed and badly lit so that I had trouble seeing what was going on and being so multi-coloured that it was painful to watch. TPTB keep saying that this year is one of the strongest ever in terms of talent and maybe that was true in terms of the standard in week 1, but it seems to have plateaued.

I enjoyed the group dance (and it was illuminating to see which celebs Jason trusted to dance and which were only allowed to sit on a chair!) but it went downhill from there apart from Peter Kaye’s terms and conditions (which provided some welcome chaos in the clauditorium) and Danny and Oti’s Charleston.

Claudia and AJ’s jive seemed very messy to me (I can’t understand Craig’s comment about ‘that could have been a ten’ – really??); Ore and Joanne seemed to be going for the world longest fleckerl record, as an excuse for not doing very much Viennese Waltz (and was it only me who half wished that he had thrown up on Joanne in that VT?); Kevin may be the paso king, but that one seemed like a confusing copy of Pixie and Trent’s paso from a couple of years ago; Ed was impressive on Jay’s floor piano in the VT, and he had a lot of jive content but hadn’t got the wow factor of the Gangnam salsa; Greg and Natalie covered the floor well and had good energy but felt like an anti-climax after the earlier dances; Rinder and Oksana had great energy and his hip action seemed never-ending, but a lot of the dance felt clunky (technical term!) and I really didn’t like his bum-shake.

The only dance I really enjoyed was Danny and Oti’s Charleston – it had great energy and was full of choreography and Danny is obviously by far the most accomplished dancer this year but everything he does is an out and out performance on one tone. Mind you, given the rest of the scores this evening, it deserved its four tens.

This evening, I’m a bit worried for Rinder and gave a vote each to Rinder and Ed (partly to confound the judges’ manipulation) and one to Danny because that was the best dance of the evening.

ETA - Jayfan, many thanks for the write up on KD so far. It sounds like everyone had a good time and I look forward to reading part 3!

Adventures in Edinburgh.

I am writing this curled up and cosy in George Clooney's bed, but more of that later....

I left a blustery Cardiff on Thursday not knowing what awaited. The tailwind was obviously powerful as the flight took 15 minutes less than scheduled ( or maybe the aeroplane elves were peddling extremely hard).

A very pleasant young man brought me through Edinburgh airport. It was quite a long way hence the conversation about Leonardo Di Caprio being in town.

The taxi ride to the hotel was uneventful, though the traffic was heavy for reasons previously mentioned.

I checked in at the hotel, went to my room only staying long enough to drop coat and case before going to see the lay of the land. I noticed a noise in the room but thought it may be the heating.

I returned to my room and was sitting on the end of the bed when the noise started again. It was a sort of scratching behind the bed. It went on for several minutes then stopped. Ten minutes later it started again. I knew no-one was scraping paper off in the next room so toddled down to reception.

A gentleman went to check my room and in his absence I chatted with the lady on reception. They had received a goodies hamper in case Leonardo was staying there (he wasn't) but George Clooney had previously stayed and she said he was very down to earth and lovely to everyone.

The gentleman checking my room then spoke to reception and he'd heard the noise too. They asked if I would change rooms and gave me a suite, the one Mr Clooney had stayed in! So I am in George Clooney's bed, sort of, but I stress I am alone!

Further adventures occurred but really tired so will continue later.

Tales from Edinburgh Part 3

The VW was to David Gray's This Year's Love.

Then instead of the charleston, one of the singers ( the one who sang stormy weather), introduced Jay and Aliona and explained that they were going to ask 5 questions (bigged up as an Edinburgh exclusive.) The questions were:
What did they miss about Strictly?
What dance would they like to do again?
Something along the lines of was it hard work on Strictly?
What music/who would they like to sing live for then to dance to?
What one word summed up their Strictly experience?

They were really funny in their responses which I won't spoil. Really worth waiting for the videos. They were both so comfortable with each other and so relaxed with the audience.

During the interval, I tracked down Agrion and family who were sitting in row C of the stalls. (Very nice to meet you) I may have taken a few more photos of us all too.

Nobody invites a hug better than Jay!

It's not a supernova ending to their dancing together, but maybe it's not the end?

It's a very happy, hopeful and sweet ending (or pause )! ....

Tales from Edinburgh Part 4

The second half was pretty similar but Jay and Aliona only did one dance, the rumba. They had their Strictly rumba costumes on - jeans and checked shirt, 'fruit salad' coloured dress. They danced to a Leona Lewis song (Light up, Light up). It was not quite the same choreography as the TV version but was more like the version by the end of the tour. It was heartfelt and very lovely. Again, I much preferred it to the KD salsa or charleston.

At the end of the show, Jay looked very relaxed, did his usual robot/big fish/little fish dance and was circled by Anya and Aliona.

They had a really great reception from the audience.

Again really enjoyed the show, despite having seen it 5 times before already!

More tomorrow

Sorry, jayfan. Wrote my message, fell asleep in the chair, then posted the message without reading what had been written while I was asleep. Have deleted my message -which I managed to post twice. Now heading for bed to sleep there, else I'll be late for breakfast.
