Thanks for the reports. Lovely to hear how happy they both were.

How's Jay's voice doing?

Even later than usual, but here's my report. Didn't get round to watching the show until well after 11pm, so hope I can keep the typos down to the minimum.

SCD 2016. Week 9. Blackpool. Report.

Spoiler

VT opens with town crier, and cheery locals enjoying themselves, amidst the attractions. Light-bedecked Strictly train, driven by Anton, and carrying oohing and aahing contestants. Train came to a stop, and disgorged its contents at the Tower Ballroom.

Really liked the group opening number. Started with the pro's: men in top hats and tails, women in floaty (faux?) fur trimmed white dresses. Natalie seemed to feature quite prominently, or maybe the cameraman just likes her - a lot. Then the celebs came on, one at a time, each doing a little turn, on their own, with some of the celebs. They started with Greg, followed by Claudia, then Ed - who was wheeled on in a chair, and did his turn whilst seated. Danny came next, followed by Louise. JR descended from the ceiling, perched in a star. Poor soul. I'm not sure if he meant to be comical, but his top hat was a mite too large for him - hardly recognised him as a result. Then Ore joined the dance, followed by the judges. I must say, they pull out all the stops for Blackpool, and I appreciate that. Very slick and stylish. A well-choreographed, beautiful dance.

Tess and Claud continue with the black and red outfit theme, from last week. Claud: black dress - nice. Tess: red dress - not so nice. I'm not a fan of asymmetric tops.
Judges entrance: Craig back to his spinny self. The other judges: more low-key.

Claudia and AJ. Jive. 'Hey Mickey' Toni Basil.

VT. Good. Training again. Oops. Spoke too soon - a few seconds of training, then on to AJ showing Claudia the sights. Oh well. If this is the pattern throughout, then I probably won't mention the VTs at all.

The dance. Claudia a cheerleader. AJ playing some kind of ball game. Rather inelegant start, with much knicker flashing. Luckily, Claudia is young enough to get away with it, I think...maybe. Rather improbably high heels (don't know why I thought 'Minnie Mouse', here), teamed with a tiny black and gold outfit. A quite nice, energetic effort. Camera angles prevented (as usual) proper scrutiny of kicks and flicks. We've been told about the 'boing' of the Tower Ballroom dancefloor - so that should have helped with her bouncing around.
Judges seemed to really like it.
9; 9; 9; 9 = 36.

Up at Claud's - Peter Kaye made an appearance, to help with the T&Cs. Now there's a master of the double entendre!

Ore and Joanne. Viennese Waltz. 'That's Life' Frank Sinatra.

The dance opens with a card game in progress. Tempo a little frantic for a VW, perhaps. But the choreography was good, I thought. Stylish. Ore looked very smart, and gave it a very good effort, imo. Marathon rotation - recovered well. Impressive. Slick finish. He's such a good looking guy, with bags of personality. And he does try really hard. Hope he does well.
Judges suitably kind with their comments, I thought.
8; 10; 10; 10 = 38. (Oh, I don't know about that. Not sure it was that good.)

Louise and Kevin. Paso Doble. 'Explosive' Bond.

VT showed them at a rock-making factory, where they helped to make a personalised stick of rock. Oops I forgot I wasn't going to mention any non-training VTs.

The dance. Dramatic music, and dramatic choreography. Louise looked a bit fearful, perhaps, especially at the beginning. Then became a bit smiley, later on. Might have been a mite more convincing, with a more haughty, feisty expression? Nevertheless, I thought Kevin looked after her very well, and guided her to give a good performance. (Pity we feel that we're being force-fed 'Cliftons' - he seems like a really nice guy.) Wish the celeb's shaping wasn't so fling-y and weak (except Jay's, of course. Ah...Jay...)
Judges: pleased.
9; 9; 10; 10 = 38. (scoring seems a bit bonkers all round, tonight.

Danny and Oti. Charleston. 'Puttin' on the Ritz' Gregory Porter.

Siily VT - as head waiter in a fish and chip shop (!!)

The dance. Worthy MT opening. Thought it was good, until he lost his way, during the 'dancing on the chair' bit. Always a risk when dancing, in time, with a group of pro's - any mistake stands out a mile. Didn't let it faze him, tho' - so that was good. Surprisingly, not one of Oti's best dances. Bet he was glad when it was all over.
The judges didn't mention the 'on the chair' hesitation. Perhaps he meant to go out of time, and lose it, a bit. Silly me.
10; 10; 10; 10 = 40. Ho - hum.......

Up at Claud's, she mentioned that we might be experiencing difficulty hearing the confirmation message when we vote, due to a technical issue. Well, that technical issue clearly extends to shouters at the screen, too, as she obviously didn't hear my "Not voting - but the scoring is bonkers!"

Ed Balls and Katya. Jive. 'Great Balls of Fire' Jerry Lee Lewis.

VT showed Ed dancing on a floor-piano, to practise fast jive feet (?)

The dance. Ed descends from the ceiling 'playing' a piano. He's looking slimmer. Hope the dance is good. Well I thought it was, so there! Seemed to remember all the choreography - and there was a lot to remember, and he kept up well with the ensemble bits. Kicks and flicks, maybe, could do with a bit of work. But all in all, I think that he's worked hard, and put in a good effort - as usual. Finished draped across five pro's, to 'Goodness Gracious Ed Balls of Fire'. The audience loved it.
Judges: mostly kind and encouraging, and seemed to show some admiration, too.
Not Craig, of course. Tho' after his tongue-lashing, he said what he loved about Ed, was that he was committed and assiduous.
Len made his usual "You made Blackpool rock" remark.
4; 6; 7; 6 = 23. Up at Claud's, they shouted "Undermarked". I agree.

Greg and Natalie. QuickStep. 'Hand Jive' Sha Na Na.

Well, I thought he danced that pretty darned well, to appalling music. Lots of choreography, which he seemed to take in his stride. Music much too fast to allow for any kind of finesse. Hope he's not marked down for that. Lots of bounce and travel. Lucky he's an athlete, as he needed plenty of stamina for this one. Found the hand-jive breaks a bit irritating, but they were well done, considering. Forgot to notice his derriere. Good. Hopefully it's a thing of the past. Did notice that he's still a bit pigeon-toed, tho'. Come on, Greg. Time you did something about that!
Judges seemed pleased.
Bruno wanted a bit more glide - a big ask for such dreadful music.
Craig thought he danced it brilliantly, despite his thumb.
Darcey had fun watching him, because he was having fun.
Len thought it "queer, really, that as a long-jumper, the only thing you mucked up was the leap". Greg said that he had been trying to calm it down so much, that he calmed it down too much, so the jump wasn't as good as it could be. Len said that "considering you're a world champion long-jumper, it's a strange thing......"
8; 8; 8; 8 = 32.

Judge Rinder and Oksana. Salsa. 'Spice up your Life' Spice Girls.

Silly vertigo-inducing VT.

The dance. Starts off with a bit of hip action. Good sign. JR landed in a rather ungainly fashion, following a two male pro-assisted, forward roll lift thingy. (Technical term. And before I close the bracket. Who is the long-locked dancer? Very lithe. Hope we see more of him). This is one of JR's better dances, I think. Very good hip action, for a celeb. Good rhythm, kept time very well. Good lifts - particularly the overhead one. Fun dance. He should be proud of that. Finished with a sort-of cartwheel, and landed on both feet. Hope he gets good marks. Audience seemed to really like him.
Craig was very impressed. Thought he was hip-tastic, and called him 'Judge Grinder' The other judges liked it, too, on the whole. Just one or two very minor crits.
8; 9; 8; 8; = 33.

LEADERBOARD.

Danny and Oti..............40........7.
Ore and Joanne..........38........6.
Louise and Kevin........38........6.
Claudia and AJ............36........5.
JR and Oksana............33........4.
Greg and Natalie........32........3.
Ed and Katya...............23........2.

Tales from Edinburgh Part 5

After a quick debate, we decided not to lurk by the stage door ( a wise move it turned out as Jay and Aliona didn't come out to see people- as had been the case earlier in the week). At this point we met up with Polly and her sister who had been shopping in the theatre foyer. (Polly had seen the show on Friday). We also briefly met up again with Stella and Linda. After a few more photos, DD and Polly headed off to the hotel to get ready for their flight home, I went and dropped my bag off, whilst Speedy and Nelliek went off to find somewhere to eat in the Omni centre by the theatre. Jelly L and I then joined them. (Quick conversation with Kate on the way).

After a very nice meal and a bit of a chat about Jay (who else), we made our way back to the theatre, saying hello to Harry and Mel outside the theatre.

I had only just sat down in Row H, when a lovely lady came over, asked if I was Jayfan, and introduced herself as Jackie Bob! Stella and Linda joined at that point and I took another group photo.

After a bit of seat shuffling, Paddy, who had returned for the evening show, sat next to Jelly L on Row L and Speedy and I also moved back to Row L for better sight lines should I decide to try and film the second show.

I think we were all aware that this was the last time we would see Jay and Aliona dance possibly forever.

Well, the show started. I thought all the dancers had stepped up a gear, but really I was by now only interested in Jay and Aliona.

They got a fantastic reception when they came on for VW. The stalls looked slightly less full than the matinee but the audience volume was louder I think so the Circle may have been fuller. Jay was now wearing a purple shirt (the one seen earlier at KD) but the same black trousers and braces. I thought they danced the VW even better than the matinee and Jay looked to be very focused on doing the dance just right. It was lovely and moving. Especially at the very end when Jay kissed the top of Aliona's head. Huge applause and cheering from the audience. (The woman next to me did clap or react in anyway for most of the show as far as I could see so I doubt she appreciated my whooping!)

And then the Q&A session, which was even funnier. The same questions but slightly different answers, more audience participation and banter. Jay was totally relaxed and enjoying it all - very much like his TW days. He and Aliona had obviously spent the time between the matinee and evening show opening the cards and pressies from fans and in the answer to the first question, they both thanked the fans for their support and the gifts. Aliona said the fans were their keepers of memories. They both looked very touched by it all.

I won't do all the answers but just to clarify the bit about the singing, Jay said that the song he would like to dance to was The Proclaimers 500 Miles and he led the audience in a bit of community singing. It was a really funny moment but not really a singing moment. His voice sounded fine though when I spoke to him and during the Q&As.

At the end, he thanked the singer for doing the interviews all week, as asked her to take a photo of Jay and Aliona on stage looking out to the audience, as it was the last time they were dancing together 😥. That is the photo he put on Twitter yesterday at 8.00pm.

I just managed to finishing recording the Q&A before the usher came to tell me off again!

Jay and Aliona have gone on a dancing hiatus...

Tales from Edinburgh Part 6

And then the final rumba. It was beautiful. They danced it better than the matinee in my view, and I think they both wanted to get it just right, as their last dance together.
I really did have a tear in my eye at the very end when Jay looks towards Aliona, who has walked away from him. I thought Jay looked quite moved himself. Huge applause. Speedy and I stood up to clap, whoop and cheer. I don't think many others did and I am sure that they noticed that we had stood up to applaud.

I was so pleased to have been there to see them do that last dance and I really didn't mind that it wasn't the jive. It felt just right and I loved the new music with the dance- it really worked.

I didn't try to film it as the usher had already moved nearer in anticipation of their dance, to pounce, so I just enjoyed the moment. Sorry everyone.

Thank you so much for your very detailed reviews - and everybody else for theirs too.

I would have preferred their chosen quiet, moving dances too instead of the up-tempo ones, much as I loved those. I can imagine J's feelings at the end of the last rumba...

Tales from Edinburgh - Part 7

The audience loved the hanclapping routine as before (I do wonder if they are find it odd that the dance that gets the best audience reaction is the one where they don't dance?) and on to the final numbers. As with the matinee, most people got up to dance for the finale. Stella's daughter, encouraged by Jane, crept forward to the front of the stalls to see Jay. Jay and Aliona came on to huge applause and Jay looked very moved by it all. He looked like he was really trying hard to take it all in and remember the moment. I think he was saying wow, wow as he looked at every one cheering and clapping. He waved and said hello to Stella's daughter as well.

They finished with the robot dance and Aliona and Anya spinning him and circling him. He waved to everyone as the curtains closed for the final time. 😥

Tales from Edinburgh Part 8

We said our goodbyes to Paddy and outside the theatre (after a failed attempt at getting a table in the pub), we said farewells Stella, Linda and Stella's daughter, our thoughts now turning to Dublin and Big.

Nelliek and JellyL went off to Holiday Inn bar where they had spent the previous evening. Speedy and I headed off to the stage door, alongside a small but determined group of women, to see if Jay and Aliona would come out. There we met Judith, Helen and Martine from the Jaaguars. (Very nice to see you ladies if you are reading this). We also met another couple of ladies who read the thread. (Hello to you both if you are dropping in today.)

As there are numerous exits from the theatre, some people had approached the stage door lurking with military precision, with friends and family members staked out in different locations communicating by phone.

Robin and the other dancers came out and we spoke to a few of them, mainly the female singer who did the interview with Jay and Aliona. As I always do, I asked her what Jay was like and she said that he was a typical young boy of 21/22. We crazed Jay fans all pointed out that he was in fact 26, which clearly surprised her! She said he was lovely though.

Then some one got a message that Jay and Aliona had been sighted! Some of us rushed round the back of the theatre to see if they left by the other door and up the concrete steps to front of the theatre or down to car park but we didn't see them. I then checked with the guy on reception who confirmed that they had just left.

There was some disappointment from those who hadn't had the chance to meet Jay before but I think mostly we appreciated that they probably just wanted to be together with Vincent and family and that standing out in the cold and dark in a not particularly pleasant stage door area was probably not the best thing for Jay's voice or for Aliona.

So Speedy and I rejoined Nelliek and JellyL in the Holiday Inn bar. Speedy left almost straight away, tired after a very busy week and with a long drive home today.

But before Speedy left, Nelliek proposed a toast to Jaliona and friendship.

A fitting way to mark what has been a very special year.

Anyway, I hope I haven't bored you all with my ramblings. Selfishly, writing it all down helps me to remember.

I look forward to reading other's reviews and I may write a bit more on my train journey back.

Bye for now everyone.

Thank you so much for your eloquent & detailed review jayfan - not rambling at all. So glad everyone had a brilliant time & hope you all have safe journeys home in light of the dreadful weather.

Thank you Jelly_L for your review also. Made me smile that the hotel mentions who has stayed in the rooms Look forward to the next instalment.

Lovely reviews from last nights SCD TT, Rafferty & janetshep. Completely agree with your comments on the dances and just how bonkers the scoring was

Jayfan, thank you so much for taking so much time in relaying your Edinburgh extravaganza - it was great!

JellieL, NellieK - thank you, too, for your thoughts, looking forward to hearing more.

End of a chapter, not of the book, and so glad that Jay and Ali have enjoyed themselves. Jay clearly had the "swansong" on his mind all day - I tweeted him and Ali yesterday morning to tell them to enjoy it and to thank them for the pleasure they've given so many people and he liked it. I nearly fell off my chair as I'm a rare tweeter

Special thanks to jayfan for her fairly detailed reports of what we were all doing and when.
Looking forward to Jelly_L's next reports. I promise you 'George Clooney's bed' was the first highlight of her weekend!!
jayfan is now on the train waiting for it to leave. We had breakfast together and she wondered if Jay was flying back to London so I'm busy putting on my slap in case I have a rather attractive six foot two gentleman sitting next to me in 7E. (If ahouch can have dreams, so can I!!! )
Gotta go, as I still have to pack my case, clean teeth, etc.
Will send my report when I'm home with my laptop but suffice to say I have had a BRILLIANT weekend, with so many laughs. Should have 'done a jayfan' and taken photos every five minutes so I had a permanent reminder.

Thank you so very much Jayfan, loved reading your review, next best thing to being there. Will always have such fond memories of our Whooping at J&A in Wimbledon, sat next to you. Looking forward to seeing vids. Will try and get on thread as often as laptop will let me.
Thanks goes to everyone who keeps this thread going, I look forward to meeting some of you again and some for the first time when BIG hits the West End.
Feeling a little empty this morning, really hope that Jaliona tour in the future, we would all be there wouldn't we if we could?
Take care,
With love xx

Jayfan, thank you for taking the time to let us a peek inside your private diary You have had some amazing experiences over the last year and created so many memories that you can look back on in years to come when Jay is an even bigger superstar than he already is.

Jelly - you know the scratching noise was almost definitely a rare haggis, they are sometimes heard but not very often seen. Although when I lived in Scotland they would sometimes allow themselves to be seen if you had partaken of a few glasses of whisky

Lovely words Korky.

I confess to feeling quite emotional today which is no doubt partly due to tiredness and a reaction to the excitement of yesterday, but I do feel very sad that something we have loved so much has come to an end.

We have debated the problems with KD before and there were some disappointed customers there last night. It promised a lot but did not deliver for those expecting something like Vincent and Flavia's Last Tango and wanted to see proper ballroom dancing, or for those expecting to see the dances from Strictly or for those who wanted to see a lot of Jay and Aliona or for those who wanted to see a lot of Robin and Anya.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the whole KD experience for lots of reasons and I would (and have) watched a lot worse to get a glimpse of Jay. But the Q&A session really made me think that an opportunity had been missed to do An Evening with Jay and Aliona with dancing and conversation type event. They were both so great and funny. I think with the right venue, schedule and timing that would have been successful. The window for that has obviously passed and it presumably wasn't where they saw themselves going professionally or personally.

KD was obviously just an opportunity for them to 'keep dancing' (sorry for the pun) because it meant so much to them to dance together not because Jay thinks of himself as a dancer.

Anyway in case you haven't guessed, I am on a train again!

Something I forgot to mention from last night, when Jay and Aliona turned round to take the photo on stage, he told us not to look at their bottoms. However, to paraphrase Stella, how could you not look at that bottom? (Other words may have been used!)

Great review - yes, forgot to mention Peter Kaye. Too funny for words! Particularly interaction with Judge Rinder. Claudia falling about laughing.

Danny actually made a woopsie before that bit on the table as well. But those were the only two I saw in a very complicated routine. Perhaps too complicated? To my eyes, he looked a little more focussed than usual on getting it right - or maybe this was a side-effect of a couple of errors near the beginning. I'm sure Oti will be getting out the whip later despite their score! Perhaps I wasn't too keen on it because it again catered too much to his WE dancing so again made him look too similar to his previous dances - he's all a bit one-note. But that might be Oti choreographing to his strengths. Brilliant dancer, no question of that, surely a more accomplished and assured performer than Jay (I'm not going to shut my eyes and deny it), but he's already a finished product. It kind of depends on what you enjoy watching. I think that if you smushed the two together you'd have the perfect dancer. But if I can only have one of them, I choose Jay whose personality I can relate to a lot more (and who has those wonderful legs and feet, and additional elegance).

Another thought - I've been impressed with Claudia developing a soft back. As a gymnast I thought she'd never be able to manage that (flexible yes, obviously, but not soft - was one of my biggest problems with Kellie and Flackers. Hate stiff backs). Not relevant during her jive this week, but it was there last week and in the opening dance this week.

Let me please apologize for the misplaced apostrophe in that sentence. Just saw it and winced!

And once again, thanks everybody for your accounts of the British trains which I know were your real reasons for these trips, perhaps after "traingate" on the Tour.

What made Jay and Aliona so unique?

A few themes came up time and time again in various conversations yesterday.

' I have never voted before in Strictly.'
' I have never rewound and rewatched a dance before.'
' I have never joined a thread before.'
' I have never read a thread before.'
' I was/am obsessed with the thread.'
' I can't believe I am acting like this.'
' I can't believe and am slightly embarrassed to be standing here at the stage door waiting for Jay.'
' I have never felt like this before about someone on Strictly (or since Kara and Artem).'
' My family/friends/colleagues think I am crazy/bonkers.'

And so on.

It really is very striking what an impact Jay and Aliona had on us all and how very special and unique the last series was.

We discussed yesterday how for many of us it happened at just the right time because of difficult things going in on in our personal lives. And I know that was a big part of it for me.

But the combination of Jay's oh so beautiful, graceful but very masculine dancing, Aliona's gorgeous choreography and superb dancing, their touching and genuine friendship, their individuality and determination to do things differently, Jay's captivating personality (and for me, rather lovely looks), all combined to make last year a really unique experience.

This might sound ridiculous but I would go so far as to say that it has been life changing and life enhancing for many of us. I have certainly done things I could not have imagined this time last year.

It was also very clear from various conversations last night that this thread means an awful lot to a lot of people.

There was genuine sadness at some of our disagreements and departures.

Jnb - you and Becks are famous! Lots of people missed you yesterday.

I felt a little bit famous too as our Wetherspoons experience was much commented on.

Lots of people said how much they loved the Jaybus!

I really hope that we can keep this lovely thread going, with the wit, good humour and kindness it has shown for the vast majority of the time I have been reading it.

And finally, a massive thank you to Jay and Aliona for inspiring this thread (and Fatskia for starting it) through which I have had the good fortune to meet virtually or in person the most lovely people over the last 12 or so months.

Anyway, having hogged the thread for several pages, I will sign off for a bit now and admire the view from the train. I may even have a little snooze.

PS Thank you all for your comments on my reports.

Wonderfully put post, jayfan (cut just to save space).

Perhaps most striking for me personally was that it never even occurred to me before last year to vote. The idea just did not cross my mind. On a personal level, that tells me all I need to know. I'm enjoying this year but am not moved to participate by voting.

Jayfan you made me feel like I was there with you. Thank you for your story . JellyL I liked your hotel adventures and the bit about Clooney's room. I am looking forward to second part of your report. TT and Rafferty your thoughts on SCD are always so interesting. Keep the good work.
I can't wait for meeting the lovely Jaliona fans for the WE shows.
