Somebody, and I can't remember who, wanted a full length J & A rumba a few days ago. Someone called Marja, has posted this on YT

https://youtu.be/UC1uzX5mvcU

She has also posted a slightly longer version of the tango than the BBC clip so you get the bit at the beginning where he holds out his hand to Ali

If it is true, I can't see them being anyone new as he really hasn't been back in the UK long enough. He does seem to like imparting snippets of information in vague ways ( Voltar and I'm single and ready to mingle, crossed out ) that become obvious later. Likes to tease does our Jay.

Thanks Lola and Marja.
Lovely to see these.
It was Matrishka who wanted the rumba clip.

Aw, those dreamy days when all that mattered was the next phone call! Good luck to our man - it's a lovely time to be treasured.

But then again, he does love a cryptic tease......

Morning all.

After a rubbish few days in RL, I was hoping that I'd get a bit of cheer from last night's Strictly.

I didn't. It was rubbish. It needed Ed.

Best bit was the pro West Side Story dance.

Watching J&A's rumba made me realise what was missing from last nights SCD - light and shade. All the dances were a bit frantic there were no quiet moments. Sometimes it feels like the pros don't know when to stop with their choreography, like when you are watching Masterchef and Marcus says you really didn't need to put the pickled herring with the ice cream, it was just one element too many. That's how I feel sometimes watching this series of SCD, virtually all the dances have had too many bells and whistles and fleckerls added to them. I don't need to see a showdance for every single routine, I just want to see a beautiful foxtrot, or a stunning quickstep without all the extras thrown at it. Sometimes less is more.

Now that was a Tango - probably the best one ever on Strictly - easily deserving 4 x 10.

Do wish J had kept that extra button open for the actual show. I don't have designs on his neck like some - looking at you Korky - but it would have shown the lovely line from collar bone upwards even better

Thanks too for the Strictly reviews Cato, TT, Rafferty - great to read them

I liked Ed and Katya too.

ETA agree Strictly Red - and about West Side Story too - the best bit of the show. Could see the Pros loved dancing it.

Ed was interesting on This Week.
Though it's about politics it had Arlene P on. Arlene asked him if he'd changed because he seemed full of 'joy' with dancing. Ed said he'd enjoyed himself, but didn't think he'd changed apart from being relaxed and being fitter.

Remember Zoe asking J a similar thing and J didn't think he'd changed.
But.....

ETA was a surprise appearance of Robin on The Week too - dancing with a political commentator, who seemed to be enjoying herself too.

Thank you

ETA spot on Lola - Strictly is missing 'light and shade' this year.

Exactly! Love the Masterchef analogy.

Last year that beautiful rumba was a blessed relief, and a perfect contrast to dances littered with backing dancers and props.

I think a cleverly placed, similar quiet interlude would have gone down well last night too.

And to think that last year we were wibbling about how well it would sit among all of the more showy routines!

Could last night have been the worst 'too much' ever?

As you say Lola, no light and shade, just Piccadilly on a Saturday night. At times it seemed like one big audition - Anton singing, who knew? I wonder what bit went wrong and necessitated that long walk across the floor...

Out of all of it, the nadir had to be Borewod n'Bruno - a couple of ageing Vaudevillians hamming it up on the care home circuit.

I'm not even going to talk about Tess...

Jwanne and Ore.
For me, they were about as appealing as leftover Christmas chocs. You'll eat them because they're chocolate, even though you hate the flavour and know they'll make you feel sick...

The Judge and Tina Sparkle
It's a shame that he doesn't seem to have found where he fits in dance. Everything's been a bit tortured, even though he's super-fit and does have great potential. I think he may have sashayed into his Swansong.

Kevin n' Kellie, sorry, Louise Blimey, what was that? Stage Rage? Cowboys & Injuns on speed? Did they resurrect Cecil B. De Mille? Well, I suppose it was a showdance, and we know how well that goes down. Obviously War Drobe still have it in for Louise. I think I'll leave it there.

Claudia and AJ
Very clever pick up on the Snapchat vibe, although not sure about her Aslan mane. I really like Claudia, but to me she'll always be a gymnast rather than a dancer. Yes, she does all the steps in the right order in the right time, and pretty much everything the exuberant AJ asks of her. But to me she just doesn't dance. I keep seeing Olga Korbut. My fault, not hers. Still, a cracking performance and the best of the night for me.

Danny & Oti
Horribly handicapped by the ridiculously inappropriate music, and despite Oti's best efforts, to me looked a bit like the 4.15 at Aintree. Elements of tango here and there, but all a bit fraught n' frantic. I like them as a couple, think they are the best dancers in the competition, but they were overmarked last night.

West Side Story More Bromley than Brooklyn. Probably my favourite musical after Les Mis, and I'd love to see Jay play Tony. I don't think Rita Moreno and George Chakiris have anything to worry about.

SCD 2016. Week 11. Musicals Week. Report.

Spoiler

Group opening number, honouring quite a few musicals, with various dancers, dressed accordingly. Anton took the lead in this - a role which required very little actual dancing, but did allow for much strolling about, with a bit of twirling thrown in. We got to hear him sing, at length, too. The quick costume changes were impressive. All the contestants, the pro's and the judges took part. Also some kids came on, towards the end, for the 'Annie' bit.
"......anything can happen on that great big Strictly stage". Oh yes, we know. And how grateful we all were, last year when it did.
Tess and Claud came on, when it had finished, with their usual script. I think someone is teasing Tess each week, by saying to her "Yeah. That looks great on you". Claud tells us that, later on, the pro's will be treating us to a "magnificent group routine celebrating West Side Story". Sounds like something to look forward to. Hope it's good. It was a great Musical. Tess mentioned us "witnessing Strictly history, when Danny and Oti scored the first ever perfect 40, for their sensational Samba".
Judges introduced. Craig quite perky. Bruno perkier than he has been in recent weeks. Darcey as perky as she can be in that dress, and those heels. Len joined them.
The five couples made their way down the twinkly Strictly staircase. Kevin and Louise, dressed as a cowboy and cowgirl. JR and Oksana, both dressed in red, with a bit of JR's white shirt-front showing. Claudia and AJ, both dressed as young lions. AJ looks particularly sweet, I think. Ore and Joanne came down next. Ore in cartoon-coloured top hat and tails. Joanne in a gloriously coloured purple floaty dress. Danny and Oti descended last. Danny dressed in a glittery black jacket and plain trousers. Oti was wearing a sparkly blue/turquoise dress.

Ore and Joanne. Foxtrot. 'Pure Imagination' from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In the VT we are reminded that Bruno had said that their Paso was "so achingly stylish". We saw three seconds of training, then we were whisked off to the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, to meet Willy Wonka. It was for Ore to get some tips towards getting a Golden Ticket to the Semi-Finals.

The dance. The set looked quite busy, at the beginning, with five dancers dressed as enormous flowers (I think), twirling about (wonder how they actually got themselves onto the dancefloor, in those get-ups. And then how they got themselves off, again). They made themselves scarce for the actual dance, which was a relief, I thought that Ore acquitted himself quite well in this dance. Pity about the foot-fault right in front of the judges. Wonder if any of them will mention it. Good rise and fall, swing and sway. Good characterisation, but the footwork was only fairly good, at times. Ore has worked hard this week, that's obvious (but then I'm sure they all have, at this stage). I think he'll be quite pleased with the result. Hope the judges liked it....
On the whole, they gave him a high approval rating (Craig - usual niggles, of course).
9; 9; 9; 9 - 36.

Up at Claud's, Brendan, in a multi-coloured coat, sang the T&C's, to the tune of 'Any Dream Will Do' from 'Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat'

Judge Rinder and Oksana. Samba. 'Oh, What a Night' from 'Jersey Boys'

VT. The four actors from Jersey Boys were invited into the training room, to see the rendition of the Samba, danced to their song. Their verdict of JR: 'the coolest Jersey Boy around'. JR must have been surprised and pleased at that. He didn't think he was cool, at all.

The dance. I don't know much about the finer points of the Samba, as I've said before, but I thought JR did well. Good hip action, although his rear may have made a bid for a little too much attention, at times. Good rhythm. Managed well in the ensemble bit - didn't look obviously amateur among the pro's. Kept it all going throughout, and looked as if he really enjoyed it. His mouth action doesn't bother me at all now, I hardly noticed it. I really like him - he tries so hard. I hope he does well, but at this stage of the competition, everyone is at risk - some more than others.
Judges - Bruno and Craig stressed his flat-footedness in the dance, but they liked it, overall. Darcey and Len were full of praise, and thought it was great fun.
7; 8; 8; 8 = 31.

Louise and Kevin. QuickStep. 'The Deadwood Stage'. from 'Calamity Jane'

Silly VT. It might have been fun for them, but it will have effectively prevented them from putting in too much training for their QS.

The dance. A full 25 seconds wasted on faffing and stomping about, hoe-down-style. Then 25 seconds of QS (with a foot-fault in view of the judges' table), followed by a more extended faffing, then another 20 seconds of QS, before a faff-finale. This was obviously intended to be quite a good hoe-down themed showdance with a bit of QS thrown in. It was, doubtless, great fun to do, and the faffing was done very well, imo. But I think, if more attention had been paid to getting the QS footwork etc in shape: the result would have been more pleasing, in QS terms. Even more so, if we'd been shown more than the available 45 seconds of it.
The standard of Louise's hoe-down was higher than that of her QS, imo. She is a good dancer, of that, I think, there can be no doubt.
The judges: Craig was very impressed. Len agreed with me that 'there was a tad too much musical, and not enough QuickStep'. Overall they had lots of good things to say.
9; 9; 9; 10 = 37.

Claudia and AJ. Salsa. 'I Just Can't Wait to be King' from 'The Lion King'

VT. They went to visit the lions at ZSL London Zoo, to pick up some behavioural tips. Main one: The pride is led by the male, so let AJ lead. Nothing new there, then. Lovely views of the lions, tho'. Always a pleasure.

The dance. I really liked this dance. Full of fun. Lots of hip-action. Great lifts - fearless delivery, altho' AJ may have got in a bit of a muddle with the last one, so it looked a bit awkward. Good characterisation. Danced very well in line-up with the pro's. I loved the make-up and costumes. Great dance, imo. Hope she gets good scores.
Judges loved it. Craig's usual little niggles - always a good sign.
9; 9; 9; 10 = 37.

Danny and Oti. Tango. 'One Night Only' from 'Dreamgirls'

VT. They went to The Savoy Theatre to meet the cast of Dreamgirls, and did a bit of rehearsal on the theatre stage.

The dance. I thought Danny did really well. It was slick, and very well executed. Footwork was good, and I didn't notice any obvious mistakes (not that that's any guide). He was a good match in the line-up, with the pro's. The choreography was good, and he'd clearly mastered it. Well done, Danny. I found it very entertaining. What say you, judges?
Oops I missed those heel leads, or lack thereof, as Craig and Len pointed out. Apart from that they were all full of praise.
9; 10; 9; 10 = 38.

LEADERBOARD.

Danny and Oti..........38......5.
Louise and Kevin.... 37......4.
Claudia and AJ.........37......4.
Ore and Joanne.......36......3.
JR and Oksana.........31.......2.

By way of a finale, we were treated to an excellent West Side Story-inspired routine, featuring the pro dancers. The routine comprised three consecutive dances, each with a very different mood to the one before. Great choreography, beautifully interpreted by all the dancers. I liked it very much, indeed. Well done, all.

The whole blasted series has lacked light and shade. Subtlety has gone out of the window. Last night's efforts were just excruciating

Absolutely. Jay and Aliona drew us in to their dances. Everyone else is too busy projecting out.

BIB1 - totally!

BIB2 - nothing against Oksana but I don't think she's really managed to suss him out and point him in the right direction. Either that or he doesn't actually take direction all that well

BIB3 - loved watching Olga Korbut - and Ludmilla Tourischeva, who was a wonderfully elegant gymnast

BIB4 - I didn't think Danny pulled off the technique. Yes, it was ridiculous music but ....

I thought the standard of the actual ballroom dancing (what there was of it) fell substantially behind last year's Musical week in general

Thank you to everyone for the reviews and views on last night's Strictly. I have to agree with all of them!

I was out all day yesterday, seeing all three plays in the Donmar's Shakespeare trilogy (with an all female cast, set in a women's prison). It was amazing.

And then I came home and caught up with Strictly which........wasn't.

Even ignoring Jay and Aliona's rumba, I found myself looking back fondly to last year's musical week to the comparative subtlety of Kellie's table dance and the dancing teapot. Helen's Les Mis paso was a masterpiece by comparison - at least I enjoyed the drama!

Everything this week seemed over-coloured (Ore's purple jacket and green trousers made me feel bilious and that set was just weird), high-speed (Danny's tango - I don't know how he kept up; I couldn't) or not a lot like the dance it was supposed to be (the quickstep and salsa).

The only thing that I enjoyed was Louise's 'am I really supposed to be enjoying this Kevin?' face during her VT (and even then, I not sure if she was acting or not )

The problem is, I can't really see it getting any better running up to the final. While I was out yesterday there was a charity singalong in St Pancras station and they sang Jess Glynne's 'Hold My Hand' and I felt really nostalgic for last year's series.

On a happier note, Marja has also put up a good quality video of the opening number from the last night of the tour at the O2 - you can indulge in some Jaycomotion! Thanks Marja, if you read this thread

Wretched Love

Your heart feels heavy
Your heart feels light
You float by day
Can't sleep at night
As soon as he's gone
You miss him so
And when he's near
You don't want him to go
Love makes you so happy
And then so sad
It addles your brain
But you're not going mad
You can't relax
Once he's entered your mind
But that's the way
True love is designed
The world stands still
When you look in his eyes
But spins again
When you've said your goodbyes
You feel your heart thump
When he's back at your side
It jumps out of your chest
When your two worlds collide
It's the only sickness
That makes you feel better
Well, unless you receive
A 'Dear John' letter
