I kept wondering what was happening on stage in between the numbers. It sounds like a great piece of musical theatre.
Jay's voice sounds just right for each song he sings, vulnerable and slightly hesitant in some and a belting it out and confident in others.

It seems strange, hearing him sing in the " musicals " way as opposed to the boy band way. In my opinion he has a great voice and to be very honest, I am slightly and pleasantly surprised. Not that I didn't love this voice when he sang in the band, I did, but I think he was under used and we didn't hear how good his voice was.
It must be a totally alien way of singing for him, so very different from the singing and harmonising he became used to in The Wanted. I know he did singing, dancing and acting at MADD but that was a long time ago. He is a natural though. Its great to hear him act with his voice in the songs ( I know I am not explaining this very well ) and I look forward to seeing him actually act on the stage, again something, I am sure I will be pleasantly surprised about. For some reason, I don't now know why, I was very wibbly about Jay tackling the lead in a musical, but hearing the Big recording, I needn't have worried.
If Jay takes a musical theatre career seriously, I believe he could be a star”

I felt the same as you Dfer. In fact somewhere on this thread, you will find a post from me saying that I couldn't see Jay having a career in MT! Mainly because I believed his assertions that he couldn't act and I just didn't know if his voice would suit MT.
I can't tell you how wrong I was. When I saw Big in Plymouth, I was blown away by Jay. He really was good and absolutely rose to the challenge. The pressure on him must have been huge and I am so full of admiration for him.

Lola
I do suspect that Jay is leaving clues about his next job, just as he did with Big.
Don't know anything about the Addams Family musical though.

I wonder when we will know?

PS I don't know any jokes at all! Sorry.

I think you'll find he's right up there in the firmament already! He's a natural, absolutely loves it, and is right where he belongs. Rrrresult!

I just love it when he starts to sing 'Stars' there's one particular note that is just so sweet and lyrical - his voice is very special, very sweet and melodic in that song. Oh how he was underrated in The Wanted - he's the one with the voice, and more importantly, the gift of really interpreting the lyrics, and they hardly ever made use of it. But, should they ever reform things could be different. I'd love him to record a solo album - his phrasing is superb, diction clear, and boy, does he sing with soul!

Do you know the best thing for me about all of this is? The fact that the, self effacing, shy ego-less geek, the one from The Wanted that everyone thought couldn't make it after they broke up and the one everyone thought as the guy with the least talent, is confounding them all. In his own quiet way he is proving them all wrong. Because he under valued himself ( maybe something to do with being bullied in his past ) didn't push himself forward and didn't blow his own trumpet, he was hugely under valued by The Wanted management. When he stars in Big in the WE and receives the plaudits, I think, by what I have heard, he deserves, he will show everyone, that he doesn't need his " wing men " anymore. In truth, he never did. He always had it at his finger tips, he just needed a catalyst like Strictly to show him that he had the wherewithal to make his professional dreams come true. I am so happy for him. He is proving good things come to good guys

So, putting my super sleuth hat on and probably putting 2 and 2 together and making 27, The Addams Family as a musical...hmmm. Jay posted a clip of the hand from the film walking down a corridor with the word "yes". Is he just pleased it is going to happen and he is preparing to see it...or...has he lined up his next job?

Well spotted Sherlock👓 The thought did occur to me, but saw that it has already been cast. Maybe that is just the touring cast and when it hits the WE new people will be brought in. The timing might be just right as it probably wouldn't get to the WE until the latter part of the year. It would be fantastic if it were true, as it would, in my opinion, be a show, that Jay would have fun being a part of. Somehow I can't see him doing a Mamma Mia or The Lion King. Also, as I have said before, in the sound cloud interview, it sounded like he was hinting that LA might not be " home " in the future

Like Jayfan, I didn't see his future in MT and, like Jayfan again, I was blown away, enthralled and entranced by him in Big.

To put it a little crudely, it hasn't half taken some balls to do it, as well. First acting part is the iconic lead role in, essentially, a revived first-time-in-the-UK musical based on an iconic movie. And he smashes it. Incredible.

Also, boy oh boy, I hope he does some solo music sometime. Not pap pop - he can do better than that, he has a voice that will stand the test of time.

I wouldn't mind betting that after it's West End run Michael Rose has ambitions to take BIG to Broadway, and I'm sure J would love to do that, if it does happen. I'd be surprised if he'd sign up for a new show so early in the run of BIG, although it's showbiz, so anything coukd happen....

I'm now moving my Christmassy posts onto music, they just don't do Christmas songs like they used to - that makes me sound very old

For my first, and possibly last if everyone goes "no not Christmas songs" and "but it's not about Jay" I give you Bing Crosby and David Bowie, what an unlikely combination. I remember reading somewhere that Bing didn't have a clue who Bowie was. And to make everyone who remembers it feel really, really old, the 6 year old son that David talks about is now 45 and his wife Rodene had their first child this year

Christmas isn't Christmas without Slade ..

.. and as a tenuous link to our thread subject ... I felt old yesterday when I fleetingly wondered if Jay likes Farscape, which is quite recent sci-fi .. I thought ..and then realised that the last episode was made when Jay was 13

We are now post 2016 Strictly series and, ooh, look, the two Appreciation Threads still really steaming on are this and GG's. The 2016 ones never got off the ground.

I give you Slade and raise you Wizzard

Farscape - oh yes 13, I bet he knows it. I loved sci-fi at 13, I admit to being a bit of a geeky 13 yr old

The threads - yes I noticed that as well, weird that no one this year really took off.

Spooky, my son and I were only talking about Shane McGowan at the weekend as it was the anniversary of the death of Kirsty MacColl on the 18th. Son remembered watching a documentary on Shane getting new teeth fitted

Yes, I was just reading about that. What a transformation! So interesting that he won a literary scholarship to Westminster and then got busted for drugs a couple of years later! Bet his parents were pleased about that. Poor Kirsty, that was awful, I remember it well.

OH loves the lyrics, so I looked them up and sang the whole song to him just now (well, as much of the tune as I could work out, as the meter's a bit of a challenge in places). He could be bursting into song all over Christmas - his voice is akin to Aliona's - choose a key, any key.....

GillP - thanks for the link to the Joe McE version too.

Korky
Seems light years ago! He's in a totally different place now, and absolutely loving it.
