His 'One Dance' song has now been the UK #1 for nearly two months.

Who keeps streaming it.. and more puzzlingly.. why ?

'One Dance' isn't that great a song.. #1 for 7 weeks ?! For some unfathomable reason it keeps getting enough streams to keep it well ahead of the others.

I can't understand the appeal. What the heck is going on ??

Brown envelopes, and radio / tv play. See my "artists who were big for a while, but still make music" thread and you will see lots of potential number 1s and how corrupt the industry has become. Its also easier to control citizens of a lower i.q and constant play of things like that reduces i.q.

All you need are 10000 people who are obsessed with one song and you are practically at number one

It used to be that you would need to find 100000 different or additional purchases to keep your song at number one now the 1st week people just need to keep playing it 10 times a week until they get sick of if it

Drake to me is the most boring artist out there right now, I will never understand how "Hotline Bling" became such a success - it's genuinely the most dull song I have ever heard!!

I'm 26 and don't particularly like drake. He's very bland imo. Hope he's not around for long. As for the longevity of 'one Dance' God knows who's still playing it, it just shows how streams have ruined the charts.

Drake is very hit and miss for me. "Hold On, We're Going Home" is SO much better than any other song he's released. it's ridiculous.

Yeah thats a very good song the only one of him I really like to be honest, his recent stuff seems to have lost its edge yet he gets more popular

i cannot see the appeal in drake at all. he's not particularly attractive, he's not very charismatic, he isn't that good of a rapper and his lyrics are nothing to write home about. he seems to be the rapper that all the young, usually white, teenagers grab onto to make it look like they are "rap fans". much like eminem was back in the 00's. i do love "hold on, we're going home" though but that is mostly down to the vocalist rather than drake.

Drake's demographic is the same as Justin Bieber.

I suspect there are millions of teenage girls across the UK who love Drake, and so stream his music and fantasise over him whilst One Dance plays away in the background.

The biggest problem with Spotify is the set playlists. People can just open a playlist and start playing the songs from track 1. Chances are One Dance is track 1 so on the one hand you've got all these teenage girls choosing to stream One Dance. Then you've got the lazy people who are happy to just open a playlist and end up listening to One Dance just because it's on the playlist and it's too much effort to skip to track 2.

Last weeks UK chart was a curious one. Throughout the week Drake and Justin Timberlake were neck and neck, with Justin getting a slight lead over Drake with two days left before the cut off point.

Somehow in those 2 days, Drake overtook Justin and got a 6k lead. How is this possible? Do people stream more on a Wednesday and Thursday, or do people download less on a Wednesday and Thursday.

Looks like we're gonna have to get used to Drake dominating the UK chart. One Dance is likely to get 10 weeks at #1 and now there's news of a new version getting released featuring Justin Bieber. If that gets released on iTunes/added to Spotify then Bryan Adams better start getting worried. Drake's coming for that longest running UK #1 record.

Totally disagree. Drake's fanbase mainly consists of young males rather than teenage girls. He's a rapper. Hardly fits the Justin Bieber demographic although he does have more mainstream appeal than ever right now. One Dance has been the #1 streamed song on Spotify for weeks now. It holds the record for most streamed song in a day in UK streaming history. That doesn't just come from it being the top song on the playlist as no other song (not even Adele) has achieved that sort of streaming figure.

Another reason why his popularity can't be put down to teenage girls playing the first song they see on repeat is the success of album track "Too Good". Not a single but took off of its own accord to become the 3rd most streamed track in the UK right now and a chart hit.

Now, for me, the Justin Timberlake song is my catchiest song of the year so far.

More deserving of UK #1 status and has outsold everyone else on the i-Tunes/Vodaphone 'big' top 40 for the past 3 weeks where 'One Dance' by Drake's popularity has waned.

I'm with Dandem in that 'Hold On, We're Going Home' was a great song by Drake three years ago. I just find the material on 'Views' not up to the same standard.

Not on streaming it hasn't. The charts better represent the songs that are most popular right now with streaming included in that. Sales aren't the only measure of popularity. One Dance was #1 on the Big Top 40 for 3 weeks too, so I don't see how it's undeserving.

I count myself as a Drake fan and imo One Dance and Hotline Bling are his worst single releases ever. His singles rarely represent the quality of his albums at the best of times (which up until Views were getting better with each one), but those two tracks are just blatant attempts to score smash hits and boy has it worked a treat.

That's the only song of his I like. I really don't get why he's so popular. I haven't heard One Dance but Hotline Bling is awful.

Justin would have been number 1 on the official chart for 3 weeks as well if it were solely based on sales, I think I read his sales were nearly double that of Drake's last week. I think that makes a total mockery of the chart, IMO it should be about what people are buying, not just what they're listening to. If you do that you may as well add in Youtube views as well!

Surely what people are listening to is a better indicator of popularity than sales when most people consume music through streaming services and pay for those rather than individual songs/albums. Sales are so poor across the board nowadays I don't see how you can take a sales chart seriously given the abysmal figures. Just basing the charts on sales would make a mockery of the music industry when sales figures make up a pretty small proportion of how people consume music nowadays. Surely the charts are there to represent the most popular songs out there right now and streaming is one measure of that popularity.

On 23,000 sales the rest streams. The charts have been ruined.
