Roaming is getting cheaper, companies are getting greedier.
I believe EE probably charged you a £5 euro data bolt on automatically.

Sounds more like you used data over two days, and you get charged £3.33 a day for EUROPASS, which with VAT, is £4 a day.

You can opt out and pay a per MB charge, which is better value if you only use a small amount of data. I like the idea of the europass, but on some days it feels like a rip off.

I agree.. I like the way Three does it, you can choose daily whether you want a euro bolt on or pay per mb..

You won't have been charged that much for so little data, as there's a maximum cost per MB now.

Something else must have bumped up the cost.

The Euro Pass will charge the £3/£4 a day even if 1MB of data is used as it gives a 500MB daily allowance for that fee.

Bundles are exempt from the EU caps.

I had a message from TescoMobile a few days ago, and if I read it correctly then calls and data usage within the EU will simply be charged against your contract allowance.

Which is good news, and I'll try it out in a couple of weeks time.

Yes, but it's only for the summer. It ends on September 3rd.

I switched from 3 to EE in January and really like being on the network, but EE's roaming changes are really uncompetitive, i am going to ireland today for 5 nights and it's going to cost me 4 quid a day to use data, if i was on three it goes without saying it would have cost me anything.

I had that Tesco message too. Delighted. OH is with BT Mobile - they are expensive and so far haven't made any roaming concessions this year.
2017 is due to bring roaming as part of normal allowance as per the EU's new regulations (if we stay in the EU!).

You don't have to activate the daily bundle though. You can buy other add-ons, which are cheaper (and some that last for 7 or 30 days).

At least with EE, the data you buy will work at full speed!

Even if we vote leave, it will take a few years to sort out. It could come as a shock if we do leave in 2018 or 2019 and then suddenly have to pay rates akin to travelling outside the EU!

Well, apart from lowering their EU roaming rates?

The networks will have to be very careful with that. The first one to raise prices will start to lose customers. If we leave the EU but become part of the EEA like Norway then nothing will change.

If the prices did shoot up, I'd just stop using it. I'd probably enjoy my holiday more

Thanks, I obviously didn't read it thoroughly. Still, I've got a holiday and a city break before them; I'll give it a try.

This is copy and pasted directly from the downloaded PDF bill, seems pretty clear to me -

What you used outside of allowance - Roaming
For phone number:
07515 ********
Using your phone while roaming in the EU Mobile data
1 MB 85 kB 1013 B outside of allowance
£6.66
Total charges outside of allowance That all adds up to
Calls
Within allowance £6.66

Unless you've wasted hours of your life talking to EE opting out, you can't use data abroad with EE unless you buy an add on or have europass I thought, so that seems very odd!

As said roaming charges are coming down for EU counties and roaming with in the EU will cost next to nothing in the next few years but if we vote to leave the EU that may no longer apply to us.
You could have used the free Wi-Fi that's in Amsterdam airport. Although the Wi-Fi is not great at the airport is better than using your data.
I have been to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport a good few times in the past.

there's obviously something wrong with that. Call your provider.

Yes, I am a frequent visitor to Schiphol, and I would usually use the wifi in the KLM lounge, however I was on a very tight connection and needed to send an email after getting on the plane so the airport wifi was not an option.

Looking more closely at my bill, it was actually 2 occasions (outbound and inbound) £3.33 each time. That makes a bit more sense, sounds like I was automatically put on some sort of Europass.

You need to opt in BUT once you have, you're on it until you opt out - even if your next travel abroad is many weeks or months in the future.

This is the same problem when people opted out of the €50 or whatever the exact amount warning texts. Do it once, never get warned again on future roaming travel.
