I have a Panasonic DMRES30VEB DVD Recorder & VHS combination, it is connected to my Samsung Series 5 UE32J5500AKXXU Smart TV with a component cable.
When I play a DVD disc everything works correctly, however if I try to play a VHS cassette nothing happens, I have tested the DVD Recorder & VHS with another TV and both the DVD & VHS work correctly.
Why is VHS is not working with the Samsung TV and how do I correct the problem ?

Something must happen. Even if its only the reels going round on the videotape as it tries to play, something must happen. Because if nothing happens (i.e. the tape doesn't even go round) then that is why you aren't seeing anything on your TV screen.

Assuming the tape is actually playing, is there a switch somewhere on the machine to allow you to choose whether you want to output a signal from the tape mechanism or from the disc mechanism? Presumably there must be something, else what should the TV show if you were playing both a DVD disc and a video tape simultaneously? And, if there is such a switch to allow you to select which output you want to watch, have you switched the output to VCR whilst playing the tape?

At worst, you could try a scart cable rather than component - never come across a VCR machine which utilises component (the red, blue and green video cables, plus red and white stereo audio). Component is generally used for carrying a high definition signal when HDMI is unavailable. You're never going to get high definition from either DVD or videotape. Scart will carry both video and audio in a single cable - component is video only.

I have downloaded the manual for this machine from the Panasonic website. the reason the Component output does not work with the VHS player is that it is not designed to be used that way. The Component outputs are DVD only.

Which suggests you connected the machine to the other TV using one of the other video outputs.

You have two choices.

Use the Component video outs to get a better picture from the DVD player section and use the Composite or S-Video output for VHS playback, if your TV has enough inputs of course.

Use the S-Video or Composite Video output only for both VHS and DVD

The manual I downloaded from the Panasonic website didn't show any SCART sockets on the machine. Can't link to it directly due to the way the Panasionic site works but put DMRES30V into the search box here

Was a bit surprised to see no sign of SCART sockets. Did make me wonder if I was looking at a US version but in the specs it mentions 220V AC mains only so guess not.

Did it ever work or has it recently failed, did you use the same cables on the other TV, what type of component cable are you using, e.g. Y,Pr,Pb audio L&R for example on 5 wires? I suspect that VHS may only be available, composite, via SCART or a composite video o/p. Have a look in the handbook if you still have one.

There is an english version on that site showing SCART sockets but not component unless you count svhs/yc. There is a VHS button and something about a button for quasi svhs which seems to have to be on the right setting. If the o/p hasn't got the manual, suggest he downloads this one and works his way through it.

Could have sworn when I looked that there were neither of the two manuals labelled Operating Instructions - English 20/12/2005 which do indeed show SCART sockets. And Component Video sockets (number 5 in the rear panel diagram).

Ah yes, I was looking at page 14 which shows connections with the supplied cables, component is on page 15 but says "DVD only" in small print.

Just found 20/12/2005 with the component connections on page 19, I probably have looked at more than one version of the instructions which was a bit confusing. Doesn't say what it is for but the SVHS o/p says DVD only so I suspect it is the same.

No idea what format comes out of the SCART and do not intend to plough though the messy manual to find out, I will leave that to the o/p. (best of luck).

I recently bought a Panasonic PVR, its manual was dreadful as well.
