EE: Nick Cotton shouldn't have been killed off.
Nick would have been a young boy last time Gavin lived in Walford so I thought it would have been great drama to see Nick and Gavin meet and for Gavin to know Nick's weaknesses. It could possibly have made a thrilling Halloween/Christmas.

Killing off Nick was one of the best things DTC has ever done in his stint. Nick has been going around in circles for a long time. He became a panto predictable baddie after the 90's,

It would have been a good way to kill Gavin off. I just want Gavin dead! Can't Bobby or Ronnie or Dot even just kill him off.

There are only so many occasions Nick can come back and do the same storyline. DTC did well to kill him off for good and give Dot a good storyline for the 30th anniversary. Nick stopped being menacing a long time ago and John, as lovely as he comes across in real life, was becoming more and more panto with each return.

I didn't want Nick to die but Dot is hardly in it anymore so it was unlikely he'd have had much scope for a return anyway.

Nick's a character they'd been struggling to get right for years. He became a bit of a joke during his stints under John Yorke and Santer which is strange as one of the worst things he ever did - causing his son's death - was under the former. The Dotty storyline was an absolute joke.
I think the biggest problem is how little attention the show paid to Nick's relationship with Dot, a key part of both of their characters, in both of these stints. DTC revived him somewhat. John Altman worked well with Pauline McLynn and Nick's relationship with Dot was wonderfully written this time around. Lots of dark humour which was always evident in their relationship but without compromising the fact this man is a b*****d. However, the character had run its course and it was time to go. Scenes with Gavin and Nick snarling back and forth would probably have seen Nick regress back to what he'd been under Yorke and Santer. Gavin is an even bigger panto villain than what Nick was at points. Nick's final scenes were perfect. |

I agree, it was the right time for him to go. If he hadn't the 40th anniversary would have went like this...
Walford nursing home Nurse Becca: Right folks we have a new resident moving in today, lets all make him feel welcome. Nick: *Hobbles in on zimmer* ello ma. happy 100th birthday Dot: oooh I say. Is that you Ethel? Cora shudders in terror Gavin and Nick meet in the hallway. Gavin: Nick Cotton. I don't believe it. You killed my daughter you scum. Nick: Actually I just made you think that. Tanya is Max's ex. muhahaha. Gavin: thats it.. Nick and Gavin lift their zimmers and threaten to burn the place down. All the fit young nurses scream and run in a panic, and take cover. |

I really enjoyed Nick's exit and think it was the right time for the character to be killed off. They had to do it whilst June Brown was still capable of giving a good dramatic performance and both of them delivered well IMO.
