I don't take any pride in it at all. I'm not gloating at all. It upsets me to see a business I've watched for 30 years be at such a low point. Having people like AJ Styles and Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn on national TV......and I know Vince's hand is forced, I know he has no choice but even he must come outside of that bubble at times and realise how it looks. How it comes across.
People on your show that, it's like the idiots in the school playground, the kid that always wants to fight but every one knows there's no chance they're winning any fight lol. They've got them parading on the show with belts and you know the average man or woman at home is laughing, there's no way Kevin Owens or AJ or anyone else from NXT is winning a real fight in real life so why ask people to make believe they're a champion in the wrestling”
It's not really much to do with this. If it was Vince hand-picked guys like Ryback, Sheamus, Reigns and Del Rio would have caught on big time. The lack of defining and creating compelling characters is much more the issue. Generally the decline in ratings could be attributed to:
- Format of prime time TV wrestling hasn't changed much at all since mid to late 90's
- Running time that of a movie epic
- Kids of the Cena and Batista years now teens/adults
- 50/50 and constant short term booking
- Apathetic approach to narrative
- Manchild, corny humour to appeal to McMahon
- Obsession with sports entertainment and cult like approach
- Changing viewing habits
- Yes, too many ordinary looking 'superstars' working a lot of spot based matches without a compelling character depth.
- From supplanting Punk as below the partimers while on a long title reign, all the way to booking Rollins like Honky Tonk Man and having him as figurehead for 8 months.
Together it has been a toxic combination.
