Rapeseed Oil or Vegetable Oil?

Given that normal vegetable oil is made from rapeseed oil, what is the difference between bottles of rapeseed oil which is 3 times the price?

I assume that the more expensive rapeseed oils are supposed to be the equivalent to Extra Virgin olive oils.

Also vegetable oil doesn't necessarily have to be rapeseed.

Added to that is testing has found that many olive oils labelled as EV have turned out to be bog standard so maybe the same happens with rapeseed and you are just paying for the prestige.

isn't it that pure rapeseed has a higher smoke point in comparison to vegetable oil, which is why it's pricier?

i may have that wrong, mind.

Rapeseed oil is supposed to be something special, but I can't stand it. I'll use anything but. Sunflower is my favourite, then olive and peanut oil.

I believe "veg oil" from rapeseed is mechanically/chemically extracted. I think it is also know as canola oil.

Oil sold as cold pressed Rapeseed Oil is just pressed from the seeds and is like Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

You cannot compare the 2 as they have different markets and uses.

When cooks talk about rapeseed oil , generally they are talking about pressed Rapeseed Oil.

I believe cold pressed rapeseed oil has a beneficial omega acid content second only to hemp oil. I bought some when I couldn't find any hemp oil and found that I quite liked the taste.

As a vegetarian, I started taking a spoon full of hemp oil a day for health reasons, but didn't particularly like the taste. Then one day, I experimented with a goat's cheese and salad roll, trickling the oil over the top half of the roll and then covering it over with hummus. Heavenly

I think rapeseed is one of the healthiest oils - very high in polyunsaturates for example.

Yeah, this is what medical people have told me.

It's really expensive in tesco if you look where the rest of the oils are but there's a much cheaper one on the world food isle.

I buy the Good Oil brand of hempseed oil, but that's the only one I've ever seen. I'm glad their advice contradicted what I'd read elsewhere, that it should be kept in a fridge and consumed within three months. I've just finished some I kept in a cupboard for at least a year and it was perfectly okay.

"Another downside is that rapeseed is hard to grow organically as normally the crop requires high levels of nitrogen fertiliser."

Why do you use hempseed oil?

That's because in North America they didn't like using the word rape.

It's also one of the worst oils to eat over here because it's all GMO.

I hardly ever cook with oil but I have a bottle of Alfa One Rice Bran oil which is sold in all the supermarkets I think. It's quite a nice taste to it.

Mainly because I'm a vegetarian and also because my cholesterol is higher than it should be (probably too much strong Cheddar). I'm always very wary of any health advice that seems to originate from the US, but this seems to be reasonably factual.

As you will read, its main disadvantage is that it loses its nutritional value if heated. Unfortunately you can't get stoned on it.
