Dave Swarbrick RIP
I don't know how many people on here are folk or folk/rock fans, but the fiddler Dave Swarbrick has died https://www.theguardian.com/music/20...ort-convention
He is one of the few people to have read his own obituary when The Daily Telegraph prematurely announced his death in 1999. He was one of the true greats of English folk music - I was lucky enough to see him a coule of times in recent years and he will be sadly missed. |

I remember him from Fairport Convention in the early 70s
I think he also played with Al Stewart who was a particular favourite with my mates in the 70s RIP |

An excellent musician as both fiddle and mandolin player.
He suffered from emphysema for over 20 years. Remembering him on stage with Fairport a few times at the end of the 60s, he always played while smoking a fag, so I guess that's how he ended up the way he did. He featured in the film, Far From The Madding Crowd - 1967 (in the harvest festival scene where a folk band were playing). A sad loss to the British folk scene. |

Very sad news. Saw him with Fairport Convention many times during the seventies.
The last time I saw Swarb perform, on TV, was a couple of years ago when the BBC were having their final evening from Television Centre in London. One of the musical guests of the evening was Richard Thompson and he invited Swarb to join him for a few numbers. It was almost like old times seeing those two performing together once again! A tremendous loss to British Folk Music. RIP Dave Swarbrick |

Yes, for real this time sadly.
He was a brilliant musician. I heard him live a couple of times. The most interesting time was just him and fairport's guitarist Simon Nicol in a small pub in Aberystwyth. Brilliant. I was within a few feet of them both as they played. I recall he came on and played a Bach partita or something like that to warm up before playing the folk stuff. He had a cigarette dangling from his mouth almost throughout the entire performance. |
