Your Favourite Euro Tournament?
what has been your favourite European Championship tournament so far?
I did enjoy Euro '96 a lot. it was great seeing a major football tournanment over here and the way it captured the nation. Just a shame with the final outcome. |

Agreed with that and wasn't Euro 2000 pretty good with loads of goals and drama?

Euro 2000 except for the final 2 minutes, which broke my heart into a million pieces and are my second most painful sporting memory (after the Bayern Munich CL loss to ManUnited in 1999)

Overall, probably Euro 2008.
Cracking tournament with some brilliant matches. In the group stage Turkey's win over the Czechs, Croatia's win over Germany. Then the way the Dutch took apart both Italy and France only to be beaten by Russia in the QF in an outstanding match. The Turkey/Croatia QF, the Germany/Portugal QF, the Germany/Turkey Semi-final. All brilliant. |

2000 and 2008 for the actual football, 1996 for the nostalgia.

1996, as I just remember being amazed at Sammer, as I had never really seen a libero or a sweeper before, and he played that role very well I thought.
England playing as well as they did against Holland was also obviously a highlight. |

sorry guys, old.....1984. Platini got 9 goals in (I think) 5 matches. France were electric. The semi final vs Portugal was something else.

A stat about Euro '88 to bore your mates with - it didn't have one sending off, or one goalless draw, or any penalty shoot-out. |

I was not born yet, but my father claims the German Euro 1972 team (with Netzer as the main star) was the best German team he has ever seen

1984, that France team was wonderful to watch and we weren't distracted by England bringing everything down.

the end to the Turkey v Croatia match was mental. Croats scoring in the last minute of extra time and thinking they had won only for the Turks to score in injury time.
that was a brilliant tournament and I remember how much I weirdly enjoyed it without England being there. . A very memorable tournament indeed.

It was a fantastic tournament I agree without England. The Dutch were scintillating in the group stage absolutely demolishing France and Italy. Then there was Turkey who always seemed to be involved in some sort of drama. We had the group stage match against Switzerland which somehow wasn't abandoned despite the pitch being in an awful state due to torrential rain. Then there was the comeback from 2-0 to beat the Czechs 3-2 in a group match that would have gone to penalties had it finished in a draw as both teams had identical records. Then the Croatia win on penalties and of course the semi final against Germany will be remembered more for the fact that the whole world lost pictures for quite some time due to a lightning strike and BBC One had to switch to radio commentary with no pictures
. A very memorable tournament indeed. |

The game that stands out though is the Spain v Yugoslavia game, another cracker from the Euros. That moment when Alfonso scores in the last minute is a favourite in our household. |

I wanted Italy to win as well, hated the French team (bar Zidane) for beating Brazil in 98. Looking back now though, even though Italy probably deserved to win that game, that French team was quite brilliant. Portugal and Netherlands also deserve special mention for Euro 2000, both played some good stuff.

That Dutch team was so gorgeous with their golden generation all at their best. I've read a journalist describe the Italy v Netherlands game as "a beautiful Lamborghini getting stuck on an ugly speed bump". Sadly a far cry from the Dutch team of today...

It is one of the great international teams of recent time. They had Vieira, Zidane and Henry all at the peak of their game during that tournament.

For me Euro 2000 is the best, and only just pipped by the two 1980s World Cups for best tournament I have seen. Sadly, Euro 84 wasn't televised in the UK, so I've only seen a few of the goals.
