I remember Ronnie and Roxy used to be feisty, tough and they would not let men walk all over them. Now they act completely different to their original characters. There are more dependant on men and dont act so tough

Pat Evans. Pat was larger than life but there weren't many people on the square happy to see her with her chequered past. But a few years on she transformed into the loveable pat we all remember.

Robbie Jackson - he was originally supposed to be the new nick Cotton, but it didn't pan out and he became the hapless unlucky one instead.

Really?? As far as I remember he was always a hapless loser from the get go.

Yes definitely Pat. She came in as a really nasty character. Appalling Mum. Ex prostitute etc.

Phil Mitchell. Used to be a decent bloke. Protective of his family. The softer side of Grant according to Sharon. Now he's just horrible and vile. If you watch really old clips of Phil it really is like watching a completely diffrent character.

From EE.

Pat.
Philth.
Billy.
Terry.
Minty.
Barry.

Remarkably enough when he first joined the show King Weeble was quite a decent bloke and all the others arrived as dodgy or scumbags.

Exactly. Phil was the sensible, more mild mannered brother in the early days. A lot nicer than Grant and far less hot headed. Mates with the whole square etc.. Over the years it's as though Phil and Grant have swapped characters!!

Also, agree re Pat Evans. I was only a baby in the early easties days, but remember watching one of the old episodes on UK gold around the late nineties and I couldn't believe that it was the same Pat as the one I was watching on the real time show. She was a nasty piece of work in the early days!!

Another character who changed completely was Kim Tate in Emmerdale. She was actually very sweet when the Tates first arrived, loving wife to Frank, best mate to Kathy, genuine and a good listener. She was still portrayed as a relatively nice character with a conscience even when she was having the affair with Wilmott Brown. Then suddenly she transformed from a nice genuine character with lots of friends into a complete super bitch!

Dean Wicks-he was a goofy loser at the beginning of his first stint. A cheeky chappy but a dud with the ladies.

They were clever to play with elements of that in changing his character the 2nd time he returned, to transform him into something darker.
As a result an undeveloped chRacter became more memorable & a higher profile figure.

David In Emmerdale. He was introduced as a manipulative con-man determined to swindle his father Eric Pollard. Nowadays he's the comedic fool.

Wilmott Brown was the name of the posh yuppy who raped Kathy in Eastenders in the late 80s so not sure who it is you're referring to here.

Can I add Tracy Barlow. Went from fairly pleasant but sometimes whiny character in Corrie when played by the previous actress to superbitch since Kate Ford took over the role.

Another couple of Corrie ones. Sally, from nice and quite placid to supersnob. Gail from sometimes quite feisty (especially when in an argument with former mother-in-law Ivy Tilsley) to her current character of irritating, imbecilic wimp.

Sorry! I actually meant Neil Kincaid!! Not sure where Wilmott Brown came into my head as I know he was from easties.

Agree re Tracy and Sally!

Shabnam was a big change, although she returned under a new actress. Originally she was independent and rebellious. Then she came back and became prickly and reserved, though she had her reasons and we saw a much more full character develop in her two years.

Tim Metcalfe in Corrie. First arrived as a deadbeat father who wasn't responsible enough to hold a job or even feed Faye when she stayed with him. Now he's running half of a business and being a fully committed husband to Sally. Good change, but huge character re-shaping.

Carly in Emmerdale. Was terrible when she arrived, trying to con everyone and suddenly now she's a responsible fun friendly girl. Again, good change, but very sudden and a huge shift.

Irene in Home and Away.

She arrived on the scene as a vindictive, scheming battle-axe with an alcoholic problem before developing into the mother hen we know today. Kind of similar to the trajectory of Pat in EastEnders.

Kim Tate in Emmerdale was a fairly pleasant woman who liked horses when she joined. By the end she was ruthless and evil, and is on the run for Insurance fraud and attempted murder. Still one of the best character's the show has ever had!

I think a lot of that can be put down to her alcoholism- she was a heavy drinker who beat her kids, but once she got sober she became the kinder, motherly figure she is now.

Bree Van De Kamp/Hodge
Started the show as a stuck up republican who was pushy, house proud and too damn proud of herself. She refused to accept her son was gay, covered up her own daughter's pregnancy through embarrassment and delayed calling an ambulance for her husband while he had a heart attack just so she could do some housework. But as the show continued, Bree was still feisty and no nonsense but she calmed down, She battled alcoholism, accepted her son for being gay, took on responsibility for her grandson and began to realise she was really no different than anyone else.

Pat mellowed when she got it together with Frank.

Also after she was attacked by the Walford Attacker in 1987. I remember Pam St. Clement saying they smothered her in sausage fat for the scenes where Pat was found half-dead in the square.

Tracey in Emmerdale. When she first came into it she worked on a telephone sex line and diddled Sam out of money – or rather got him to get a credit card, buy her lots of presents then left, leaving him with a load of debt. Since she came back she’s turned into a feisty, fun loving girl and I really like her now.

Nope, it's a Klingon soap.

Apologies. I looked back at my post and realised I didn't mention the name. It's Desperate Housewives.

Leyla in Emmerdale. She was quite dowdy before i remember it took her ages to get together with David because he was supposedly this big hunk.
When she returned she was a leather clad pole dancer.

Someone else has already said him, but David. He was a bit of a sly intelligent businessman back when he arrived. Now he is childish and comes across quite thick!

Jai also changed. he was quite nice when he arrived and even through the whole Charity relationship he was ok. Then he got Rachel pregnant and became a pyscho.

Jimmy King. He was brought in as a bit of a nasty character. He seemed to mellow hugely after he was nearly killed in the showhome explosion and has played more of a comedy character ever since. Shame really as he was a good villain, especially alongside Matthew, Tom, Sadie and Carl.
