2000-2002 was EE at its peak. The cast was literally on point. Pat, Peggy, Ethel, Pauline, Frank, Kat, Janine, Dot, Jim, Mark, Lisa, Phil, Steve, Dan, Mel, Jamie, etc... And the storylines were incredible. Every week delivered from March - December 2001. The best a soap has ever been in my opinion!
2005 was also a vintage year. The Den storyline was iconic and interweaving the stories, involving the show's most iconic families in the year was TV Gold. Just gripping viewing. 2009 and the first 2 months of 2010 were also great. So many great stories and a very strong cast. Every episode delivered at the start of 2010 in the lead up to the 25th anniversary. EastEnders post milenium has been up and down like a roller coaster, but the show is now in a better position than it was 3 years ago. EastEnders pre milenium on the whole was great. There were some dull years, but nowhere near as bad as the likes of 2004, 2006, 2013,, etc... 2000-2002 will always be my favourite though. |

I dunno for 2002, lou. It was a strong year overall but not perfect by any stretch (Kat/Zoe/Anthony nonsense) and it was pretty ropey by the tail end with Spencer and Alfie being shoehorned into every other scene.
And there were some pretty naff weeks even in the better part of 2001 (Ashley's laughable motorbike death, Martin/Asif, Kat and the wooden Anthony). |

I'd say 2000 - 2002 for me. That was Eastenders at its peak and it's been on a slow decline ever since 2003 in my opinion.

Not meaning to nitpick either but 2000 only stepped up a gear from the summer. The first half was a total write-off, unless Sandra Di Marco constitutes some sort of icon.
2005 mightn't have been as consistently well-written as 2001 but the sheer excitement and vintage feel wipes the floor with all of Yorke's years put together. |

That is true, but I think every soap has there weaknesses in strong periods, no soap is ever perfect. I do generally think it delivered ever week in 2001 though. More so than today especially.
![]() I think years like 2001 and 2005 are polar opposites. There was impeccable consistency and overall quality of writing in the former but some of it was quite dull in parts outside the 4 main stories that year (Little Mo/Trevor, Who Shot Phil, Sharon's return, Kat/Zoe). 2005 had one massive story that in some form or other managed to drag in all the iconic families and characters of the former nineteen years but it was extremely poor in terms of consistency and instead of just plain dull there was some outright drivel that year (Molfie, Sonia/Naomi, France week, Ruby/Juley). |
