This is not what you want but what you think will happen.

Will it be centred around a certain character or storyline?

Will it involve a cliffhanger or just people carrying on with their everyday life?

I think most would end with some form of emergency happening where all the residents would be needed. Long serving characters would have a talk about the old days as the camera follows the road/street/square.

Or it would just end as a normal episode.

I have two ways

1) they dont, sure some story arcs come to an end, but the episode ends with the camera pulling away (to represent you), and you see the characters starting new storylines, because these are soap characters, their lives will never change.

2) it ends as shows like Survivors start, obviously hammering the point him, and the characters are completey unaware, but in the background you hear about an infectious disease spreading, and for people to avoid contact with anyone who is ill, then towards the end, someone enters the soaps pub, and starts to cough, the suggestion that most of the characters or all of them will die soon.

The main current soaps aren't going anywhere for a good few decades yet barring exceptional circumstances (Emmerdale, Coronation Street, EastEnders, Casualty). However there's several different ways the end:

1. The street/area being knocked down.
2. Characters moving away due to the houses crumbling to bits around them.
3. Absolutely nothing significant happens and we're left to imagine the characters carry on as before after a last story line affecting the shows biggest character.
4. A life-ending event such as a helicopter crash, a raging fire, a bomb, a plague or a major gas leak.

Emmerdale: The village and surrounding land is bought by a company who plan to flood the area to create a giant reservoir.

Eastenders: A group of unexploded WW2 bombs are discovered during sone streetworks. Unfortunately before they can be safely disposed of they explode destroying the square. Death and destruction on a major scale.

Coronation Street: Weatherfield's regeneration group decide to get rid of the old fashioned looking terraced streets and replace them with modern developments and business parks. First on the list is Coronation Street. Despite campaigns from residents it still goes ahead. Final scene is Ken stood at the cordoned area with Rita, Audrey, Emily and Roy watching the wrecking ball strike The Rovers and declaring "It's so frustrating."

Hollyoaks: Silas should just go on one long killing spree. After the last murder he stands on the city walls declaring "My work here is done." Before walking off into the sunset.

Doctors: Probably something like The Mill is closed down due to the opening of a new super practice they keep threatening every once in a while.

If it's ever axed this is how I want it to be done. The news coverage should entice former significant characters back to help save the cobbles (basically as many as are able) so we can tidy up where they ended up. There should also be some younger characters who think it should be knocked down, one of the early storylines dealt with generational attitudes towards places like Coronation Street (Ken's article and his comments to Janet in the very early episodes) - it'd be good to see Ken sat on the other side of that fence as the last episode comes in. A series of ten hour long specials should be made focusing on a major character for each episode, another cool series of documentaries would be a documentary for each of the houses and other locations in the street over the years. Finally the entire back catalogue should be released on DVD or re-broadcast. Ken, Rita and Emily (the most long-serving and elderly cast members) will probably be long gone by the team that the show ends though.

Hollyoaks - Silas kills everyone but Tony, Cindy, Darren, Nancy, Jack, Dirk and Simone and they get their revenge by locking him in a space ship sending him into space for the spin off show Silas in Space.

Corrie: Fresco starts buying up all the houses, leading to just Ken and RIta (maybe one or two others) standing firm and refusing to sell up but Fresco want to buy the houses to open up a massive supermarket.

Hollyoaks: After the many years of serial killers and explosions, it's a sombre ending when a new super disease arrives after somebody comes back from an exotic country, they also bring back a bug carrying the disease (without realising.) The bug just goes through infecting everyone and they all slowly just die.

Eastenders: Has to be an undiscovered WW2 bomb. Turns out, it's under the Vic and, after another fire really guts it out to the point where it needs knocking down, thats when it's discovered. Someone, unknowingly causes the explosion when they hit it with a car/bike/truck

Well, using EE as an example, I would:
- Give the Fowler/Beales one last big storyline, seeing as they are the longest serving and only remaining original family, maybe Ian gets cancer, bringing back Michelle, Vicky, Mark Jr, Peter and Cindy (plus ghosts of Cindy, Pat, Lucy), but I wouldn't kill him off, I'd leave it as a cliffhanger for the viewer to decide if Ian wins his battle or not.

- Sharon finally realises that she is wasting her time being Phils doormat and leaves.

- Linda Carter receives a visiting order from Dean, who begs for forgiveness, after she does this, the rest of the Carters decide to leave together, opening a bar in Spain and selling the Vic to Janine Butcher, who returns for the last few episodes.

-Phil's life of crime catches up with him when he meets a rival who can actually take him on, his defeat and Sharon's exit forces him back on the drink again, Ben, and Louise disown him and he does alone from alcohol abuse/liver failure, in the same house where Reg Cox was found dead in the pilot episode.
- Ronnie is arrested for killing Carl White and her baby is taken off her, forcing her to lose yet another child, but her story ends at her trial, before a decision is reached by the jury, leaving it up to the viewer to decide wher fate.
- Roxy kidnaps Amy from Jack and returns to Ibiza
-Max and Tanya finally reunite, they remarry in the final episode, causing an excuse to bring all of the cast members together in the Vic for the final time, just as Janine is revealed as the new landlady.
-the final episode ends with the Fowler/Beales reunited for Ian, Ronnies trial, Max and Tanya's wedding and day break on the square as the other market traders arrive to open up for the day, showing that life continues and that there is always new stories waiting to be told in Walford.

For the final scene of EE I feel like the Square will be empty (when the markets are closed for the day). Then Kathy, Ian, Sharon (originals) and Phil step out of the Vic and just smile and talk about something. Julia's theme plays and they walk away. Tracey closes up the Vic and the camera zooms out onto the whole Square. This then zooms out into the Thames and the credits play (similar to the credits in the Max and Stacey 2 hander except during the day).

What does soap history tell us?

Brookside: the Close closes
Crossroads (original): the hotel closes
Eldorado: Marcus goes off on a boat.

Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes style - they all go into the pub. The door closing and the camera panning up to the name being the final scene. Better than trying to pick which character to use for the last view and the pub is the main part of the square/village/street.

Sally Fletcher will move back to Summer Bay caravan park. The episode will end with Sally looking at all her family pics on the mantlepiece.
Leah will get a knock on the door......its Vinnie outside back to declare his love for her

I don't think any are in danger of ending anytime soon, but I could imagine in H&A's case a massive explosion to wipe out half of the bay.
