Hi, we have 2 adult cats who for a while now want to eat anything and everything! You cannot leave anything out on the kitchen side (or any side) for even a second because they will be right there grabbing the food and running off with it, even if the food is wrapped up i.e cakes, crisps etc and left for a day or over night it will be half eaten and all over the place the next day or when you get home.
Now before you ask, yes they are up to date with worming treatment etc and no we don't have a kitchen door because of the lay out of the flat.

Other problems are:
*Meowing/looking for food straight after being fed.
*Opening the freezer
*Begging for food when we are cooking/preparing food i.e sandwiches
*We have a child lock on our kitchen sink cupboard to keep them out of the food waste bin
*Rummaging through the recycling because it could have sandwich meat packets (or anything that smells like food) so we have to put packaging like that in the general bin now.
*They will eat anything, eg. Cakes, fudge, oil in a pan if left unoccupied, cold meat, crisps, scones, bread, basically anything that is left in their reach or not, whether we are there or not, and sometimes unedible things like spongey bed frame stuffing on one occassion, but it is usually just food. They have even been known to chew through packets to get the contents.

Its getting out of control now and apart from putting everything edible under lock and key I don't know what else to do. I have thought of getting a bread bin for the likes of open packets, but not only do we have very limited work top space I think they would eventually get that open as well. Its SO frustrating! It started off the occasional thing here and there and I thought "cats just do that sometimes" now its every chance they get, you would start out with a ham sandwich then go to the fridge and in a split second you could be left just with bread or a floor sandwich. I am sick of having to keep my eye on them while I get a drink at lunch time just incase they run off with my lunch, or carrying it with me so I know I won't come back to it being munched on 😕😫😡

I dont want to sound rude at all but are they possibly bored?

you mention that you live in a flat but do they have access to outside during the day or are they house cats? if they are house cats then they might just be bored (do cats get bored )

maybe try the treat ball or something similar that will give them something to occupy their minds on AND get food at the end of it

What cat food do you give them? Have you tried having a bowl of biscuits available all the time?

Also how often are they fed and what are they fed.

My boy cat has cistitus so can't have dry food apart from about 5 or 6 Whiskas treats a day, my girl cat is allergic to something in general cat food (vets cant pin point what exactly) so only eats whiskas wet food or food that hasn't had anything added.
It isn't really healthy for them to have a constant supply of food available anyway. Plus even if I did my girl cat would either swell up or throw up...or both.

Twice a day an treats in the afternoon. Half a whiskas pouch each in the morning and a full pouch each in the evening.

They are house cats. I would rather not constantly give them food though just to occupy them while we eat etc. I also doubt that a treat ball would work anyway, because as soon as they are done they will probably just go looking for more food in all honesty...

So they may be bored, do you have plenty of toys, scratchings posts and play with them. What type of cats are they?

Have you had them tested for thyroid problems?

We had all sorts of issues with our chundercat who was throwing up pretty much every day. After discussions with the vet we tried loads of different foods. The one that worked was the Purina One Sensitive, which is a dry food. We have a bowl of that available at all times and then give the other cat a sachet of normal wet food a day, which the chundercat isn't allowed. No more vomit

Our cats are not overweight. I accept it may not work for you as you keep yours inside so they probably do not get as much exercise as they should. I assume as you are in a flat there is no chance of letting them out?

I find that when I give our cats Whiskas it makes them ravenous.

I also think your portion sizes are far too small.

Have you tried a baby gate on the kitchen opening, or one of those folding doors if you dont have space for a full door.

Yes they do chuck up dry food sometimes if they eat it, but to be honest (close your ears if sensitive), they then re eat it later as its literally just the nuggets, not proper sick.

I thought the portion sizes were on the small side too. My cat has at least 4 sachets a day, he doesn't get dry food as he pukes it up straight away! He used to love Whiskas food but went right off it suddenly(as cats do), & any time I've given him it he pukes that up too. He's liking Felix at the moment. ROLLEYES
