Hi All,

I discussed making this thread on the Football Neutrals Thread last week. I thought it would be good to have a thread where we can post general news, gossip, and our reactions and opinions about everything related to Euro 2016 during the tournament.

Matches and big news items will most likely have their own threads but this one could be used to collect all those smaller items of news and conversation into one thread which we can all then read and contribute to.

Enjoy the tournament and here's hoping for a brilliant Euro 2016! 👌 ⚽

Some news to kick things off... Roy Hodgson and the England 23-man squad have boarded their plane to France. They'll spend a week in their training camp before playing their first fixture against Russia on 11th June.

Good idea, Chief.

Thought I'd post this up in here. The BBC have been counting down towards the start of the tournament with their 25 best moments in Euro's history.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36345839

There's some great (and not so great!) memories in there.

Yeah, well said Chief.

Just in case anybody here doesn't venture into the Broadcasting forum, the BBC have unveiled the theme to their Euro 2016 coverage - a catchy version of Edith Piaf's 'La Foule' performed by Izzy Bizu.

Aside from France, I can't think of any (big) team that's in good shape at the moment.

Germany are unimpressive with ageing invalid Schweinsteiger in charge instead of the brilliant Lahm 2 years ago.

Spain have left an incredible amount of good players at home, but taken Casillas. Hmm...

England have decent attacking players and a good goalkeeper for once, but they can't play together.

Portugal are a horrific-looking team bar the injured-ish Ronaldo.

Italy... sigh... I have never seen a weaker Italy team sheet.

Who else is there?

Maybe we'll get another Greece or Denmark this time?

Belgium could go far in to the tournament. Croatia look more than decent. Both Poland and Austria are capable of upsetting a few.

I'm definitely expecting at least one outsider to reach the last four.

It's a good list- Zlatan's volley in Euro 2012 is my personal favourite. Hopefully we'll be seeing more of that footballing wizardry in Euro 2016

Different strokes but, for me, I would love to see Austria, Poland or Belgium doing a Leicester. It would make for a memorable tournament IMO.

Nooooooo!

My worst nightmare! The only Leicester-type upset I will tolerate is if England finaly win it! That's got to be 5000-1 realistically

If England don't do well, then I would hope that the rest of the home nations (and the Republic of Ireland) do themselves justice, and get as far as they possibly can.

Many people are tipping France, which is understandable as they're a great team. But I think people are forgetting that 'les blues' do often have a habit of imploding or infighting (World Cup 2002 & the infamous World Cup 2010 rows).

There's still the spectre of this Benzema/Valbuena scandal, plus an accusation of racism levelled at Deschamps (who got his house vandalised a few days ago) by some key figures. So whilst they're a great side and amongst the favourites, the wheels could easily fall off their Euro campaign.

It does seem to be one of the more open international tournaments for a while, with no clear favorite, which might mean, we get to see some more open and exciting games.

It's also a nightmare for bookies and punters as it's so unpredictable. But great for the fans!

Did Spain really lose at home to Georgia last night?

And people thought England's results were poor!

Rüdiger ruled out for Germany according to Raphael Honigstein on twitter.
Confirmed that he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during training.
He's been replaced by Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

I've just spoken to my German friend who is a fanatical Germany supporter (and is usually very confident about their prospects) and she told me her expectations for Germany at this tournament are exactly nil. I think that's a widespread view in Germany

To a man, the World Champions expect to do nothing two years on? Seems a bit mad.

Their form has been very strange for the last seven months or so - they've lost four of their last six matches incredibly (including defeats to Ireland and England). Hard to estimate what sort of Germany will turn up.

Well, they have been pretty terrible since they won the World Cup two years ago (of course if you compare them to the Netherlands they have been brilliant, but by ordinary standards they've been poor).

The importance of the criminally underrated Philip Lahm to Germany cannot be overstated. He organised the whole team and without him, they're a bit of a mess. Plus, Schweinsteiger was still in form two years ago whereas he's a wreck nowadays. Their defence is pretty bad. Of course, they still have Muller and Ozil etc, but as a unit they are definitely not impressive.

Having said that, Germany still have the best manager and have a tournament mentality, so I still expect them to progress to probably the semi-final, but I just can't see them winning this one.

They lost to Poland fgs! That's way worse for Germany than losing to England.
