did they suggest giving them a nice house in london whilst their documents are checked?
i like the french way, i wish they were even tougher. I doubt the russian police will stand for any of this in the next tournament, people will be shot. They should have taken advice from other forces who have more experience of dealing with these idiots. In Germany 2006 and Euro 2012 there was no trouble as the local forces worked closely with their foreign counterparts, funny how most of the trouble at European matches occurs in France and Italy, 2 countries whose security forces don't like working with 'outsiders' |

Hypothetical, and probably stupid(!), question. But in the group stage first round of matches where everyone is cautious and dont wish to over-commit (because 1 point is fine when 3 points might get you through to next round) is there an optimal time to concede the first goal when you're clearly the worst team and have offered not much going forward? And likewise an optimal time to score the first goal?
Romania conceded 51st minute. France backed off a bit. Too soon for both sides? Romania certainly equalised too soon. By about 3mins as Payet got 89th min winner. Swiss nearly made a mess of going 1-0 up in 5th min. Eng scoring in 73rd min which seemed the perfect time for Russia and the worst time for Eng. Eng didnt know whether to stick or twist, there was time for an equaliser and when it arrived it was too late for Eng to do a thing about it. Pol scored in 51st min and backed off. If NI weren't so terrible i thin that game would've had an equaliser. Pol certainly looked unsure of themselves and didnt create much more after their goal. |

The simple answer is to score more than once, as Germany will probably show us!

It would be nice if perhaps our future striker started off these European Championships with a good performance.
I can see José being a very interested spectator! ![]() I wouldn't describe his performance as anything like good: one moment of class which led to the goal and several fouls, two of which deserved bookings but a weak ref ignored them. |

Have to say I thought the tournament went up a level today.
Spain v Czech Rep was another attack v defence match and the first half of Sweden v Ireland wasn't much cop, but the second half was - and Italy v Belgium was easily the best game we've seen so far. These tournaments really get going when we see teams going toe-to-toe at each other for sustained periods and today has been the first day when we've really seen that happening. |

Yeah today had some really good matches for the neutral to watch.
Chances at either in all of them, not exactly what you would want as a coach, but as a fan it is great to watch! The German game probably was the first game that really kick-started these open series of games. |

Fans now kicking off in Lille...
Appears to be English, Welsh and some Russians. Local police are on top of things at the moment but it seems to be another quite volatile situation. |

The referees have definitely had a directive to clamp down on players folding like cheap deckchairs - it's been a feature so far and was very noticeable in the Ukraine vs Northern Ireland game earlier. If it continues, players will start to stay on their deft for fear of being left exposed. The officials gave been generally excellent with the exception of those neutered mute ones behind the goals.

The atmosphere at these champs are as good as I can remember. Much better than at the World Cup. Obviously as every country has tens of thousands of fans in attendance.

Just encase anyone is wondering here are the official ways to split teams that finish on the same points.
a. higher number of points obtained in the matches played among the teams in question; b. superior goal difference resulting from the matches played among the teams in question; c. higher number of goals scored in the matches played among the teams in question; d. if, after having applied criteria a) to c), teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to h) apply; e. superior goal difference in all group matches; f. higher number of goals scored in all group matches; g. fair play conduct in the final tournament as defined in Annex C.5.1; h. position in the UEFA national team coefficient rankings (see Annex B.1.2.b). |

That seems like the sort of joke that 'supporters' used to target Cleverly too. Very modern footballish.
