Blender magazine's 'worst 50 songs ever'

So I happened upon this list via another thread and when I analysed, well I did laugh OR, bit of a protest going on here at some of the inclusions (particularly the number one which I hail as one of the greatest songs of the eighties). all such things to be discussed heron in. But first, what was Blender magazine? From Wikipedia...

Quote:
“Blender was an American music magazine that billed itself as "the ultimate guide to music and more". It was also known for sometimes steamy pictorials of celebrities. It compiled lists of albums, artists, and songs, including both "best of" and "worst of" lists. In each issue, there was a review of an artist's entire discography, with each album being analyzed in turn.

Owner Alpha Media Group closed Blender magazine March 26, 2009, going to an online-only format in a move that eliminated 30 jobs and reduced the company's portfolio of titles to Maxim alone. Blender's final print issue was the April 2009 issue. Subscribers to the magazine were sent issues of Maxim magazine to make up for the unsent Blender issues.”

I think generally we take a lot of these lists with a pinch of salt, but they do make for some contentious discussion!

Here's the list of songs first of all...

Quote:
“1. We Built This City, Starship, 1985

2. Achy Breaky Heart, Billy Ray Cyrus, 1992

3. Everybody Have Fun Tonight, Wang Chung, 1986

4. Rollin', Limpbizkit, 2000

5. Ice Ice Baby, Vanilla Ice, 1990

6. The Heart Of Rock & Roll, Huey Lewis and The News, 1984

7. Don't Worry, Be Happy, Bobby McFerrin, 1988

8. Party All The Time, Eddie Murphy, 1985

9. American Life, Madonna, 2003

10. Ebony And Ivory, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, 1982

11. Invisible, Clay Aiken, 2003

12. Kokomo, The Beach Boys, 1988

13. Illegal Alien, Genesis, 1983

14. From A Distance, Bette Midler, 1990

15. I'll Be There For You, The Rembrandts, 1995

16. What's Up?, 4 Non Blondes, 1993

17. Pumps And A Bump, Hammer, 1994

18. You're The Inspiration, Chicago, 1984

19. Broken Wings, Mr. Mister, 1985

20. Dancing On The Ceiling, Lionel Richie, 1986

21. Two Princes, Spin Doctors, 1992

22. Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American), Toby Keith, 2002

23. Sunglasses At Night, Corey Hart, 1984

24. Five For Fighting , Superman, 2000

25. I'll Be Missing You, Puff Daddy featuring Faith Evans and 112, 1997

26. The End, The Doors, 1967

27. The Final Countdown, Europe, 1987

28. Your Body Is A Wonderland, John Mayer, 2001

29. Breakfast At Tiffany's, Deep Blue Something, 1995

30. Greatest Love Of All, Whitney Houston, 1986

31. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, Crash Test Dummies, 1994

32. Will 2K, Will Smith, 1999

33. Barbie Girl, Aqua, 1997

34. Longer, Dan Fogelberg, 1979

35. Shiny Happy People, R.E.M., 1991

36. Make Em Say Uhh!, Master P featuring Silkk, Fiend, Mia-X and Mystikal, 1998

37. Rico Suave, Gerardo, 1991

38. Cotton Eye Joe, Rednex, 1995

39. She Bangs, Ricky Martin, 2000

40. I Wanna Sex You Up, Color Me Badd, 1991

41. We Didn't Start The Fire, Billy Joel, 1989

42. The Sounds Of Silence, Simon & Garfunkel, 1965

43. Follow Me, Uncle Kracker, 2000

44. I'll Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That), Meat Loaf, 1993

45. Mesmerize, Ja Rule featuring Ashanti, 2002

46. Hangin' Tough, New Kids On The Block, 1989

47. The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You, Bryan Adams, 1996

48. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, The Beatles, 1968

49. I'm Too Sexy, Right Said Fred, 1992

50. My Heart Will Go On, Celine Dion, 1998”

Now if the list were upside down and My Heart Will Go On was voted worst, I'd be happy with that! But there are songs here that I'm not familiar with at all, Mesmerize - Ja Rule featuring Ashanti, Follow Me - Uncle Kracker and Five For Fighting - Superman to name but three.

But we can see it's an American list and so us Brits aren't going to know some of the songs - still, a fair reason to explore them. By comparison, everyhit.com have a list of 100 here...

http://www.everyhit.com/worstever.html

this is where 5,6,7,8 and Mr. Blobby come in, both of which I would expect to see in any definitive list.

The other thing I'm sure people will pick up on is inclusions like The Sound Of Silence, like, a classic? What is there to hate about that song (even if it was The Dickies cover!). And in keeping, Breakfast At Tiffany's, I happen to think that this is one great polished pop song... ah but that's just me.

What are your likes and dislikes from this motley crue of supposedly rubbish songs please!

Sorry this list is awful compiled by some hipsters obviously, I know the US charts dont have the same extreme novelty tracks and bad songs that Uk charts has but sorry half these songs are great

Billy Joel,Crash Test Dummies, The Doors, Europe, Huey Lewis and dont get me started on Wang Chung and Starship hate that is so hipster they are 80s classics, bet the compilers werent even born when most of these were out.

Think 'worst' is the wrong word 'Cheesy' or 'Guilty Pleasures' maybe but most of these are not bad.

Totally agree Thorney and no need to be sorry.

What we can do is collectively eliminate some of these anomalies and throw in our own choices that aren't in this list.

In the everyhit.com table, apparently Mariah Carey and Westlife murdered Against All Odds - thankfully I have never heard this.

A lot of typical cheesy rubbish, that maybe a guilty pleasure for some. However I honestly have no idea why 'The Sounds Of Silence' is on the list, I've never heard anything bad said about that song, in fact it's considered a bonafide classic. Unless people have got confused by that cover that's been doing the rounds.

We Built This City was also the number 1 worst song of the 80's as voted for by Rolling Stone readers a few years ago, saying The song's winning margin was so large that the magazine reported it "could be the biggest blow-out victory in the history of the Rolling Stone Readers Poll" So I don't think it's very well loved

I can't imagine what they dislike about We Built This City. Why, just playing it takes me right back to '85...

I am surprised about Madonna American Life being on there

Half of these are more guilty pleasures then they are awful.

You could compile a list of a thousand worst songs before you needed to include any of those. It's not a worst songs list at all and I doubt that the magazine really believed it was.

With a list like that you do run the risk of naming songs that are "so bad they're good". Whereas most of the ones on the Blended list are just plain good.

Why? Critics panned it upon release and still consider it one of Madonna's worst songs. It's tuneless, juvenile rubbish. And don't get me started on the ridiculous rapping, that alone makes the song deserving of its place in the top 10 on the list. The album didn't fare any better with critics.

Die Another Day should have been on the list as well.

I like quite a few songs on this list!

For me, I would have Robbie Williams' Angels as number one. Can not stand that song!

I agree with every song on that list apart from 'Party all the time'.

I'd trade it with Take That - These days

Strangely my iTunes brought up the album yesterday and I found myself skipping tracks to see what songs I liked, if any. On American Life I'm in agreement with you, heck I don't even care for the keyboard arrangement on this. I have copies of 17 of her albums and I wouldn't put American Life in the top ten I suspect largely.

I used to think and feel the same until an episode of Early Doors featured it and probably due to the storyline it seemed to work and I was left thinking that, despite not getting it, it's a pretty decent pop song after all.

What a crock of pop, most of those songs did very well and were loved by people who bought music at the time, why are there no songs in there after the early 2000's?? its basically a list taking the mick out of old music, whoever devised the list is an idiot who know nothing about music.

I must add that 'illegal lien ' is a very good song, it tells a story , it has the right feel for the story and Collins' accent is spot on for the story he is telling.

I wouldnt mind that list turned into a cd compilation!
