Tesco will give you £3 per month off your bill if you install an app that puts adverts on your lock screen. This will only work on Android devices and im not sure Apple would approve of such an app but you never know.

Cue apps that fool the phone into thinking it is displaying the ads but is actually displaying useful info instead.

Interesting idea and may give this a try as the £3 off isn't a bad deal

I think you have to have joined Tesco after 2013 to be eligible. Stand to be corrected.

What are they offering to iOS users if they can''t have this offer?? Its annoying when they make bill credit deals handset specific - should be the same for all if they have sold the customer the iPhone..

Well they can't display the ads on iPhones, so I suppose it's a matter of if Tesco can't get paid, iPhone users can't get paid.

I think I would rather pay the extra £3 than be bombarded with adverts.

I guess it's a good option for those trying to save a bit of cash, though I would say £5 off would be more attractive.

It's only on your unlock screen. If it's anything like the cheaper Amazon Kindle tablets you just swipe it away and your into your tablet/phone. Takes less than a second

I agree with NathDogg i would rather pay the normal contract we get enough ads everywhere we go stuck in your face on TV, Internet even got a great big bill board TV on the side of the car park at my local bloody Hospital Next they will be putting ads on each piece of your toilet roll.

Think you and NathDogg miss the whole point, its optional in the sense that you have to sign up to it yourself, it won't be forced upon customers. It may in the future lead to tesco offering tariffs that a norminally cheaper as long as customers accepted adverts on their phones. Even then it is optional.

The idea in principle is sound, and from the looks it will be targeted advertising, based on your account details (age, location etc). Its not innovative, however it isn't something anyone else in the UK market offers, so for the moment its unique.

Yes that's right.

Apple my not approve such an App as it takes over the lock screen. Apple have very a strict approval process.

You are right, Apple wouldn't allow such a thing. I was thinking they could get the user to install an app which then displays the ads as notifications on the lock screen, but I'm sure that would also go against Apple's rules.

I understand your point and the fact that it is opt in. I just don't think I would personally be willing to make the sacrifices for such a small discount. I guess I'm not the "target" audience, which is fine.

I guess in this current financial climate any option for people to save a few quid should be welcomed.

I know its optional and everybody has choices.
I should have said Me personally wouldn't take up the offer because i get enough ads everywhere else so again me personally would rather pay the normal price.

A £3 discount just seems like an odd amount. I'm not sure how many people would be tempted by such an amount. £5 would have been much better. I guess its a balance between acceptable number of ads that they feel people will tolerate and the revenue generated by these ads.

Maybe if it's a success they could offer different levels of discount in the future.

I suspect it won't work out. These ideas rarely do. Amazon can do it because it is posting it's own ads and setting it's own retail prices.

I bet you'll soon see only a tiny selection of ads just like those free call/data SIMs that all failed.

Hope the ad downloads wouldn't come out your data allowance.

They're giving 200Mb extra to cover the ads.

Trouble is once Tesco do it and quite a few people take it up then it opens the door for every other Network Provider to do the same thing and we will all end up with ads whether we like it or not in the end.

Three may stop ads but only until such time that it decides to insert its own.
