The Moto X is dead so we have the Moto Z as its new flagship for 2016. There is a nod to the LG G5 with a with add on's utilising as 16 pin port and without the need to power it down.

5.5-inch QHD AMOLED display
Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset
4GB RAM
Fast charging
12MP camera with optical image stabilization and laser focus

The Moto Z Force will have the same specifications as the Moto Z, but will have a screen that is reinforced with ShatterShield technology, offer a larger 3500mAh battery and a 21MP camera. Due to the larger battery, the Z Force will also come in at a tad bit thicker.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the unveiling was the announcement of Moto Mods. Moto Mods will be new accessories that can be connected to the phone adding expanded capabilities. They don't require the phone to be powered down and connect seamlessly via the 16-pin connector. Some of the accessories that will be launched will be an Insta-Share projector, a JBL SoundBoost speaker and a Incipio power pack.

Only 2600mAh battery, poor show. I also worry about the 5.2mm thickness, what effect will that have on its structural integrity?
Another negative is no 3.5mm jack, so you can't charge and play music through a single port.
Not due until September at the earliest, we could be close to the next generation of Nexus phones by then.

There is that lingering rumour that Apple will drop the 3.5mm jack too. They will probably charge £25 for an adaptor. Likewise the Moto Z will require an adaptor. No idea how much that will cost.

I think one of the obscure Chinese manufacturers have already dropped 3.5mm support

It does seem very early to announce it. Don't know what the hold up is, it's using the same chips as any other flagship that has come out this year. By September the next galaxy note is due and about a month away from the next nexus so I think it will have some tough competition.

The adaptor will be included in the box with the Moto Z thankfully.
Yes that's correct, Leeco dropped the 3.5mm jack last month.

Indeed, last year the Moto X Style was announced late July and launched in September. Waiting to launch until September this year seems very strange considering it will have the OnePlus 3, Note 7, iPhone 7 and the next Nexus phones will all be around the corner.

Not quite what I hoped for. With the protruding camera lens, you need an add on mobile to make it look less silly.

The modules are a nice idea (well designed) even if both this and how Google has moved on has really ditched the original concept of changing RAM, storage, CPU etc.

In many ways, I prefer this to the LG way of doing things though.

I imagine that once their creative designers handed their ideas over to the engineering team, the concept was quickly ditched, within a few seconds. Memory and cpu placement is critical and having them in pluggable, movable modules was doomed from the start. Still it made for some interesting stories if nothing else

I remember writing about this when the idea/concept came up and even then it was considered mad and unworkable by many. Nevertheless, it's a shame nobody could prove the doubters wrong.

Given I usually case my phones, I quite like the idea of add on covers that are a bit smarter. I've had battery covers for some phones, but they were a bit clunky by having to connect via the normal charger.

What Motorola has done is clever though, and will hopefully be copied by others, and even goes back to the days of clip on batteries were you added a thicker battery for a long day, or the thin one for a night out (in this case, no module).

Well the Moto Z onecompute mod looks interesting indeed. I'm not sure they need to make the dock wireless though, that must add to the price quote a bit, and the power consumption hence why it has wireless charging. But that defeats the whole purpose, so back to square one.

I think I prefer the way the Lumia 950 uses USB Type C, to this implementation though.
