Composite video to VGA?
Hi there - wonder if any of you can help me?
I have a spare LCD pc monitor which [if possible] i would like to put to use as a TV for my spare room. I only have one aerial point in my flat so already use a wireless a/v sender to transmit digital tv from lounge to bedroom 1. I'm thinking of purchasing an additional receiver for bedroom 2.....as long as i can find a way to connect it. The LCD monitor only has a 15 pin VGA input. Is there some sort of adaptor I can buy to connect the composite video from the wireless unit to the pc monitor? Perhaps it's just me being a bit thick but I can't seem to find the right thing at Maplin. Sound isn't a problem as i already have an amp & speakers in that room. Any help greatly appreciated!! - oh and answers in plain english please as i'm not a techie

Thanks - but blimey - that looks like a whole huge unit needing its own power supply judging from the LEDs on the front ??!!
Also £60 is a little steep as i'm going to also have to spend money on the additional wireless receiver unit. I was hoping there would just be a simple connector/cable with a hole for composite video one end and 15 pins on the other end. ...god i wish i'd paid more attention in electronics lab now... |

Sadly it ain't as easy as that!
The video signal that makes up a TV picture has a number of components. In amongst those are three colour components, Red Green and Blue, hence RGB. In a Composite video signal these three colour components are encoded into a single stream. In a RGB signal they are totally seperate. So Composite video can be sent down a single cable but RGB requires three, one per colour. Therefore to connect a composite video source to a RGB standard (which is what the VGA connector on the monitor is basically) you need some electronics to seperate out the three colour components as well as appropriate connectors. As for size, it's not given on the website but in the paper catalogue (old fashioned technology wins every time ) it says it's 145x95x34mm (5.75x3.75x1.25inches in old money )

Hmmm i was worried you were going to say something like that!
So in that case it looks like it's going to cost approx £100 (with the wireless) to use the old lcd panel as a tv. Mind you i suppose this is still cheaper than buying another lcd tv and still less bulky than a CRT. Well thanks for the info Chris, i'll have a think about this and see if i can find a slightly cheaper converter unit. |

Just had another look at that unit you suggested and found this on the catalogue page:
"Output suitable for 50Hz monitors only (Please note: most LCD displays are 60Hz)" ... so it might not be the right solution for me then

That may indeed be a problem. Especially with TV being fixed at 50Hz. If you are very lucky the monitor will synch up to it, but equally it might just display a "Unknown Video Mode" message or similar.
Don't supose you have the manual for the monitor? If so check out the Vertical Refresh rate in the specs. If that goes down to 50Hz you could be OK. Otherwise converting 50Hz to 60Hz or higher is no simple task (nor cheap!!). |

I'm sure i still have the manual for it somewhere so will try to dig it out.
God i thought this was going to be a cheap solution, using stuff i've already got and not too many additional bits!! Certainly don't want to spend £100 if it may not work anyway, thanks again for your help! |
