Toshiba RD-XS34SB and blue screen

Hi Guys,

I've resurrected an old DVD recorder from the loft but for whatever reason all I get is a blue screen. The model is the Toshiba RD-XS34SB and was working fine when last used about 5 years ago ( according to what is stored on the HD )

I have the aerial coming into the back of the recorder (RF1) then back to the tv from RF2.Also have it connected via scart AV1.

I can get it to playback content that is stored on the hard drive and it will also play pre-recorded dvd's without any problem. I can watch the television through it using the AV1 channel however if I go through the channels using the remote all I get is a blue screen, it's as though the channels aren't stored after tuning or perhaps I have the settings wrong for AV1 and AV2 in the recorder. Please can anyone advise, what I thought would be a few minutes job has already turned into a couple of hours ! Many thanks

From what I can tell googling t'interweb this recorder does not have a Digital (AKA Freeview) tuner of any sort. Therefore it can only receive analogue broadcasts. Which no longer exist of course.

Therefore this recorder will never be able to record anything coming down the aerial by itself. The only way you could get it to work would be to pair it with an external Freeview box. And if you were going to do that just to record telly programmes then the best thing would be to throw away the Toshiba and get a Freeview PVR which would save a world of hassle.

Thanks ever so much Chris, that will save me a lot of time and I'll certainly take your advice regarding Freeview
