Hodgson mentioned Sterling and Lallana being wide with Rooney on the left side of midfield. By that I think he must've either meant left of Alli in a 4-1-4-1 with Dier sitting, or left of Dier in a 4-2-3-1.
Edit: Although I suppose the difference between 4-3-3 and 4-1-4-1 might not actually be much, particulalry if one of your midfield 3 in a 4-3-3 sits.
