...but that was because some #1 singles were track listed on The Hits series in the 80s, whilst others would appear on the Now! albums.
I think both albums were owned by different record labels so artists signed to certain labels would have their songs appear on The Hits, whilst artists on other labels would appear on Now!
The last time there was an issue was in 2014 when Now 87 had many big hits not licensed to appear, as other record labels wanted to release a (very short lived) digital only rival compilation.
I dread to think what the track lists would be like now if Now! and The Hits were both still going strong. There would be a lot of minor hits and non top 75 singles getting track listed.
