UK's Best Part Time Band
Anyone seen this? It's on BBC4 on Fridays and it's Rhod Gilbert and Midge Ure, Peter Hook, Jazzie B (in each episode) who travel the country listening to part time bands in the rehearsal rooms, pubs and bedrooms. Each episode the musician chooses 5 bands for a gig showdown and then chooses two for the final.
It's great seeing the talent on show and the love of music that drives them, but it's a shame it's just skimming the top of what's out there. The relative lack of promotion of this and the fact it's on BBC4 rather than 1 or 2 is indicative of the boring state of mainstream music. |

I enjoyed it. Rhod Gilbert made a good host and the "legends" got into the spirit of it.
Not all of the bands were my cup of tea but it was good to see them enjoying performing, just for the sake of it. Many of them had been performing for years and never made any money out of it, but that didn't stop them enjoying it. Also, mercifully free of the "back story" that every contestant on the X Factor seems to have. |
