I'd be a lot more confident of the Republic's prospects in Group E after watching that one. Ireland were more than a match for Poland in both games in the qualifiers and created loads of chances against them.

I disagree and think they will get into the last 16 as top of the group, we shall see in a week and a half though.

Surprised by the tactics as I think their defense and goalie is suspect, from the last 20 minutes you could see the chances you could have created if you had played like that throughout the match

NI were even more limited than I expected but still had a good chance at the end and were well drilled.

Poland were average.

33% possession says it all. Dire performance but what was more annoying was the commentators, come on they were crap don't try and polish a turd.

Shame for Northern Ireland

Expanding the number of teams who could qualify for this tournament's finals from 16 to 24 always carried the obvious risk of lowering the standard and this afternoon was a good demonstration of that.

And only 1 corner and 1 shot at goal I think, those are very disappointing stats

Amazingly they ended top of their qualifying group, so would be here regardless.

The travelling fans only want heart and soul from the team and they did get that at least. I'm proud of the lads tonight - they were defensively very solid and worked hard all night. But tactically we got it wrong.

I think Michael O'Neill has to take the blame. Very defensive set-up with a formation and choice of players we haven't tried at any point before, not even in the friendlies.

Should have started with two up front and Dallas on the wing instead of McNair. Once the subs were made we looked a lot better but it was too little too late.

Must approach Ukraine with our usual 3-5-2 formation to give us more attacking threat.

We'd have made it anyway.

Poor from NI. Basically the tactic seemed to be wait for Poland to score-they haven't really attempted to win and were chasing scraps in the end. Give it a go next time-otherwise what's the point!

Too early to say that : every match has been competitive and settled by only one goal.

I like to get my mistakes in early

It's a learning curve for them though. Today was a huge step up for their players and their manager. A lot of those Polish guys have played in the Champions League (NI were rather negative nonetheless)

No, Kyle Lafferty was right, he's not being too hard Lennon, you're being delusional.

Doesn't necessarilly mean the games have been competitive

England should have been 3-0 up before conceding
Switzerland missed numerous 1 on 1s vs Albania at 0-0 and 1-0
Croatia should have won 4-0 against a very flat Turkey

But it does mean that in the last 10 minutes fans are on the edge of their seats

Don't think we'll see many more negative teams than what Northern Ireland trotted out today. Awful game.

I think they were rather overawed by the occasion. Not even winning a corner or having a shot on goal in the first half was extremely cautious stuff : I think they were way too focussed on stopping Poland scoring.

The negative set-up was disappointing because anyone who watched Northern Ireland during qualifying, or indeed the majority of our matches at Windsor Park, will know that is not the way we set our side up. We sealed qualification with a 3-1 over the Greece, the top seeded team in our group, with a really positive attacking performance.

As I've said though, I am positive lessons will be learned from this and we will see a much more positive approach in the next game.

Thought Poland looked like a decent side today; very assured on the ball, some nice passing and skill too. Hard to know how much can be read into their performance though, given how negative NI were. They surrendered the entire pitch to Poland for the entire first half. They sat in and isolated Lewandowski and were heading away a lot of balls but once Poland scored, the game was up. Should have been 2-0 or maybe even 3-0.

Yeah, you look at the players in that NI team and you can only applaud a magnificent effort in getting to France in the first place.
But now they're here they might as well give it a go rather than die wondering.
Hopefully they'll be less cautious next time out.

Yes, and they won't win any fans by being negative again in the next match. I've already heard people of various nationalities describing NI as a "horrible" team to watch after today. They should really just go for it against Ukraine.

It is good to see Norman Whiteside again on the ITV highlights show

Such a great player in his time

I remember him when he became the youngest player to play in a World Cup beating Peles record
