Dog is a loony when he's been to the groomer
I have a shih tzu, approximately seven months old he has been to the groomer five times now, his hair grows so quickly and he looks untidy so we take him as soon as he needs. Problem is he is really quiet for about two hours after we bring him home, then we have about three days where he is mental. Running and jumping on people and furniture, nibbling at our hands and feet, basically being a bit manic . He is only like this when he's been there and I can't understand why

Ours go absolutely mad after a bath, when we had Duncan a yorkie if we cut his hair he turned into a an absolute puppy dog for days afterwards we always thought it was having the weight of it off him caused it.

When he's groomed, does he get bathed as well, Stressed? Because it could be that he doesn't think he smells right, and he's trying his best to get back to what he thinks is 'normal smelling'. If a dog's trimmed as well as bathed, it's a bit different than just being bathed, I think. All that fur goes at the same time as his usual smell, sort of thing.
(Sorry, I've never taken a dog to a groomer's so I don't know what they do to the pet.) |

They do what you ask them to, bathe, dry, clip coat and nails, clean ears, and tear stains. Just request the package you want.

The OP just asked a general question about why the dog gets loopy after visiting the groomer.

Molliepops was letting me know what goes on at a groomer's. The sentence "Just ask for the package you want," means "You just ask..."

Well I said I wondered if it was because he had less hair, feels lighter or cooler, but he's like like after a mini groom too. He's calmed a bit now but it makes me dread him going. He keeps darting behind the telly then running a hundred miles anan hour across the room and back. A million times day. It's really tiring to watch. He's so lazy usually, so it's a complete change

Alrighty, I just had a wander around the web and found this:
http://iheartdogs.com/ask-a-dog-trai...-after-a-bath/ In summary: a dog trainer reckons the dog may be stressed from the grooming/bathing, and the movements are de-stressing him/her. The pet's had to stand (or sit) still for a long time, while a human gets clippers into quite intimate parts etc, so it ends up quite stressful. After the groomers, is it worth taking your dog off to a field and letting him run it off? A dry field - one with not much mud, etc?

Our dog goes crazy like that after every bath, running around and up and down the stairs.

Maybe it's just what others are saying here about the smell, as mine a lot worse after a bath. I dread taking him to be honest, once they plucked his ears and then he ended up with an ear infection! There's always some sort a drama afterwards

Dogs shouldn't be stressed from being groomed. If their introduced to it at a young age they should be quite used to it, but even if not, they shouldn't be nervously stressed out. If the dog has always got into a frenzy about having a bath even at home that's obviously just how it is, but a happy dog going into the groomers shouldn't be a distressed fearful shadow coming back out. Nearly all will bounce and dash about after a bath and clip though, my own late old dog would go sideways up the carpet
. It's a reaction from having removed the scent of the dog with the shampoos/conditioners/finishing sprays and disturbing the hair. The dog won't generally do it after being in the river or sea because it only wets the top of the coat but it will after a bath for the coat is wet down to the skin. Most stop within a short time but some can take a couple of days to feel 'right' again. It's basically like you when you come back from having your hair done, it takes a few days to bed in and settle into place once more.

My dog has gone to his hairdresser since he was teeny pup. He loves her and drags me in to her mobile van and then attacks her with kisses.
He then comes home and sulks for two days and scoots around on his butt for the next two days (he's a bichon so his bum gets clipped too, it gets itchy ).During the sulk phase we call him Samson because he loses his power when he loses his hair. |

Up and down the stairs, dashing around the house and rubbing her snout area along the carpet and the underside edge of the sofa cushions. I wonder if as someone pointed out that they're trying to get their smell back?

When did everyone start having their dogs bathed anyways ??
We had them trimmed if they were long haired breed but I don't recall anyone having them beautified !? They got a quick bath if they'd been rolling in cow or fox muck but that's was it. |
