Vodafone has been doing its own devices for ten years now, but today it launched a phone that will sell for £300 on PAYG so is no budget model.

It has a 5.5-inch QHD display, NFC and fingerprint sensor, 16-megapixel camera, Snapdragon 652, 32GB internal storage + microSD, 3,000mAH battery & Quick Charge 3.0. It's also Cat 6/4G+ compatible.

What's more, from the photos it looks pretty nice too.

Goes on sale next Monday and I'll have a chance to play with one on Thursday at a Vodafone event. Anyone who liked the Smart Ultra 6 will likely love this, but it is about three times the price!

I'd expect the price to drop. The Smart Ultra 6 wasn't always £100.

It comes with a free Vodafone VR headset too, which I forgot to mention above. No idea what that retails for (or what it looks like - I hope it's not just Google Cardboard!)

I agree, but you could always use a Vodafone MVNO (not that there are many left!) like Talk Mobile or Lebara.

But if it's made by ZTE like the Smart Ultra 6 then it should be easily unlockable for under £3.

Using my Smart Ultra 6 on Three right now to post this comment.

It looks like a rebadged Alcatel Idol 4S. Not a ZTE.

The OnePlus Two at £249 (heck, even the OnePlus Three at £309) is a better purchase than that.

Depends on the OS on the OnePlus 3, and it seems that's only 1080 screen wise. Does have NFC now, but I personally prefer the back position for the fingerprint reader - so that's a plus for LG and Huawei, and the Vodafone handset. [All my opinion]

I think they're fairly evenly matched. Snapdragon 652 being a perfectly decent SoC from what I've been seeing so far, and SD820 being somewhat overkill.

And 6GB RAM? Why?!

I can barely use 3GB on Android M or N, so how many apps will I need to load and keep running to use another 3GB?!

I agree with the 6GB of ram comment, you're only ever doing one thing at once really on a phone, not like you're going to be rendering massive video files, it seems total overkill. I also prefer the back fingerprint reader.

Looks like an iPhone clone as well, it has good specs, but hmmm

The OS and timely updates will matter to me. Same for the Vodafone too.

£300 is a funny price point. On the one hand it's too dear to attract people from the Moto G and Samsung J5, but it's three-fifths of the way to buying a 'proper' flagship- unlocked.

There might be a niche in the market, but is there a market in the niche?

I'm not sure they intend to sell many on prepay, but shop staff can push this on contract - and a high initial price is ideal for those special promotions after a few weeks...!

Yeah the one plus os is a worry as is the customer service, not that VF are amazing at that. Lol

I think Motorola have the £300 bracket bang on as food quality and near stock os so you get the updates.

Oneplus are still relatively new and still improving on their customer service side. The phones are phenomenal, though...for the price.

Surprised the OnePlus 3 is Cat 6 only. Wonder if that's an error on the specs?

I doubt it, I think they'll just be saving money on the modem by going for a slightly older one?
The OnePlus 2 was eventually confirmed as being cat4 only, not cat6 as originally believed.

It's deffo lost its hype this year. Last year everyone was going mad over the new phone, however appears the market has lost its buzz this year.

The few people I've known with the various OnePlus models have not generally been that impressed with them. No ideas why.

And there are the horror stories about the after sales service (or lack of) too.

I think there should perhaps be a OnePlus 3 thread if there isn't one for discussions about this. Clearly this phone has got the world's attention, which the Vodafone obviously hasn't (and couldn't).

Interesting choice between this and OPO 3.

One has SD card slot, higher res screen but slower.

One has faster performance (due to CPU, RAM and lower res screen) and unlocked.

So one I'd take if you have lots of video (either capture or download), the other I'd take if you like to play games.

Depends on the games and whether you get any perceived benefit of playing games on 1440p over 1080p.

Anything in the Snapdragon 6nn range can be perceived as well down on the 8nn range, but the reality is perhaps quite different.

I don't think we can consider Snapdragon 810 (besides the heat issues) to be slow, or even 808, 805 and not even 801 (my Z3 running Android N seems incredibly fast) SD652 is supposedly up there with the SD810 in most tests - and without most of the thermal issues.

Then there's the impact on battery life.

But, on paper, people will dismiss anything now without SD820 even though I've just been testing a £75 phone with SD210 that performs extremely well for most things.

I am sure 6GB of RAM will be seen by many as a 'must-have'.

The 6gb RAM won't make much difference in many tasks.

The SD625 equals the 810 in many benchmarks, but is slower in graphics intensive tasks. So may not be the ideal choice for gaming, but then the difference between gaming performance on my SU6 and Sony Z5C isn't that great. The Z5 is a little smoother, but thats about it.

Availability is also a possible issue. How many people have heard of the OnePlus range? Its a relatively niche product, at least you'll be able to walk into a Vodafone Store and buy their new phone. And hopefully actually have a play before buying.

The photos showing the huge queues outside the various pop-up locations in Europe suggest a large number of OnePlus fans, but once they all buy (which I expect they all will have done by now), I wonder how quickly sales tail off?

Vodafone will be able to push this phone, and reduce the price as necessary, for many months.

The Smart Ultra 6 is now just £99. I wonder how long until the Platinum 7 is down to £200 or £250?

There are a few negative opinions for OnePlus on here, I see. And yet, those people haven't even used one. Well, as a OnePlus Two owner, I say it's a brilliant phone. Nothing matches for the price. It's super fast and works perfectly, giving me nearly 7 hours OST and upto 30 hours on a single charge (depending on usage). And, all that's on stock Android (with ith oxygen OS, of course).
