I'm loving Steven's return in EE, and he's one of the few characters I'm interested in right now. But I can't help thinking that he isn't to be trusted when it comes to the Beales. Does anyone else get this impression? There's just something about the way he's very easily slipped back into the family dynamics, supporting Ian, reaching out to Jane, winning Kathy over with his emotional story of his mental health issues, that all seems a bit 'suspicious', IMO.

The biggest red flag for me was in the episode last week where he said he was going to leave, just after he'd reunited Jane and Ian. You could take that two different ways: either he genuinely felt he'd made a difference, come and done what he'd needed to do (helped Ian and helped the family to get back on track) and that was the right time for him to go back to NZ. Or you could look at it that he picked a time to say he was leaving when he knew Ian was feeling warm and grateful towards him knowing that Ian would ask him to stay.

So what does everyone think? Is he to be trusted or not? And what would you prefer, for him to have come back a redeemed character or for him to cause trouble for the Beales?

I would rather not have him at all personally.

Fair enough, LM. Would you find him a bit more interesting if he did have a bit of an agenda?

I hope he's being genuine. The Beales need some stability after the Bobby mess.

I think his moral ambiguity is what makes him interesting.

Agreed, I think this is what I like best about him. He could feasibly go either way.

I think for now he is genuine but soon something may trigger him to get him angry easily and seem different.

Steven is a great character but I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

I think he has genuine intentions and after Lauren finished things with him he just didn't want Ian and Jane go give up on each other. Steven does get frustrated though when things don't go the way he wants them to so we'll have to see if he has grown up and has a good way of dealing with that or if he takes after his uncle David and is a master manipulator!

I wouldn't trust him with Johnny!

Id like to think that he would have thought more of his half sister and wouldn't really be concerned about the woman who ditched her dead body in the middle of the woods

I don't trust him with Johnny! But I still think they'd be hot together.

I kind of feel like he could be using Jane as a way to get to Ian as she really is all that Ian cares about anymore. By ingratiating himself with Jane he's setting himself up in a very strong position within the family.

Yes reuniting Ian and Jane is a good way for him to get involved. I think he's stringing Lauren along too.

Max should totally get his revenge on Lauren by seducing Steven.

I agree. Hmm I never thought of David as a manipulator.

Lauren should walk in on them slow dancing to this: http://youtu.be/K6JTjhWUUyI

To answer the question, I agree with Mr S that he hasn't batted an eyelid over what happened to his sister at the hands of two people he has no blood relationship to, so this isn't over. Maybe he will transform into Bette Davis and do a Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?!

I'm actually liking him this time, wasn't a fan of the character in his last stint, unsure wether that's because I don't warm to characters as messed up as he clearly was then or wether I liked the character more when played by Edward Savage (both scenarios are true just don't know which contributed more)

However the character is more stable (for now at least) it seems and while yes I still love Edward Savage in that role I think Aaron Sidwell really fits well this time (acting improved?)

I hope he's genuine, Steven was always my favourite "Beale" child and I never saw him as anything other than Ian's son so I didn't really like what they did to him before.

However I'm also unsure how trustworthy he is, but I'm so hoping he's stable and really here to help Ian and I hope the forgiveness he's got from Jane & Ian isn't going to backfire on them Ian could use another son around (yes I'm aware not biologically) in Peter's absence and I think deep down Steven has always needed Ian too

Interesting to see that the non-trusting folk among us are now heavily outweighing the Stelievers. I thought it would go more in the other direction, at least for now.

One thing I do wonder about is Aaron Sidwell giving two interviews regarding Steven's intentions, both towards the Beales and towards Lauren. In both of those interviews he's told us that Steven is genuine but I'm beginning to think that maybe he's deliberately playing along with this plot so it comes as more of a surprise if it does turn out Steven has an ulterior motive.

Either that or a number of us are completely misjudging this and reading way too much into it.

But seriously, I think you're right. Wasn't he fairly close to Lucy during his last stint? Between him and Max I really hope that we get a bit of a Revenge-style thriller going this Autumn/Winter.
