Write to the people who produce the Oxford dictionary and tell them to delete the word 'luck' because according to yoy there is no such thing.
Tell Jose and countless other managers, players, fans and the media that there is no such thing as luck in football.
Sorry, but you really are being to stupid for words on this.
Winning the lottery is lucky. You buy the ticket and then there is now other influence on the outcome, it is random. If you win you have been lucky.

In football I would disagree with Don slightly because I think sometimes things outwith explanation can occur but in the context of this conversation he is right. Essentially what is happening here is that anything positively achieved is being categorised as "lucky" i.e something on which the manager had no influence over, yet when anything negative happens I dont see the same people saying "Oh Hodgson was unlucky". England were lucky to beat Wales but inept rather than unlucky to not beat Russia. That can't be right can it?

Hodgson made decisions to positively influence the outcome of games and he has good players to carry out those decisions. De Gea being the Man Utd goalkeeper isn't "lucky" for Van Gaal, you expect Man Utd to have good players and if they dont you sign them etc etc.

You only breeze through the easy groups. Wales had Belgium and Bosnia in their group you would've finished 3nd and into a play off if you were in that group.
Really? The group you finished second in? The team we just beat? We'd have sailed through it I'm afraid, but tell yourself whatever you want if it soaks up your salty tears.

Luck
success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions.

Hodgson brought on players he selected, Van Gaal played Rashford, Man Utd pursued and signed De Gea. The examples used in the thread were results of intentional actions.

The Digitalspy definition of luck tends to actually mean 'someone I don't like did something good, got to explain it somehow'

And if Wales had been in a different group they would not have got though.

There is absolutely no point in saying what would have happened if the situation was totally different from reality. This is not some sci-fi program where we have alternative realities. Let's stick to reality

The way groups are drawn with seeding means that some teams will have more easy groups then others. There is little or no reason to go down the road of "what if"

Did anyone see his face when vardy scored the other day. Clearly doesn't like him. So probably be Kane or Sturridge on Monday

I heard he nicked his lunch box and he was really upset because his mummy had made him a special sandwich

doubt his mum is still alive, given that he's about 70.

That's why he was upset.

Would you not be upset if another kid nicked your sandwiches at school if mum died?

I could see a personality clash likely between a well traveled man of the world and a racist with a short fuse.

Prove it, with evidence to back up your statement.

That's how groups work. The better teams are seeded higher.

There's luck in everything. It's ridiculous pretending there isn't a lot of luck in football.

Man utd were lucky the last two times they won the European cup. Lucky to beat Munich. Lucky to beat Chelsea.

Ferguson was always lucky, although there's a bit of the Gary players about it. The luck disappeared when he went.

Except van gaal got very lucky.

And giggs has been pretty unlucky not to get the man utd job. Swansea would be a good fit for him.

No more ridiculous then thinking a game where one team scored more goals,Had more shots,Had more shots on target had more of the ball etc won a game because they was "lucky"

When England go out can't wait to see people calling it bad luck rather than criticising the manager and team.

2nd still means we automatically qualified and we still have a chance to top this group.

You get easy groups sail through them then when it comes to tournament time you bottle it then you pick and chose scapegoats and blame going out on them.

Yes, the group you automatically qualified from in second, that's my point - why would we struggle in a group Wales qualified from? There's literally no basis at all to suggest so.

Just accept you lost the game and leave out the 'yeah, but' for now. When England get eliminated you'll get the chance to squawk about how terrible when they lose and lucky when they don't they are then.

Your logic is bizarre. Of course England would've qualified from Wales' group and probably as group winners too. Likewise England will win the group in this tournament. They haven't "bottled it" yet.
