I wonder why the OS public Sierra beta GM is not released the same day as the iOS public beta GM.

The Beta Software program GM. If you've signed up, then you can download with a code.

I signed up to the public beta programme but there's been no OS Sierra GM update yet.
As I said previously it's not being disturbed by update. |

You need to log in to the beta program website and get a Mac App Store redemption code for it.
As I said previously it's not being disturbed by update. |

Sierra GM was released last week you need to download it from the beta site though, it's not an update from the App Store.

The releases haven't always coincided with a Mac event either. The only Mac event last year was in March, for example. This year they've kept the beta and GM releases in sync across all platforms so I would expect Sierra to be publicly released next week along with the other platforms. |

Interestingly, my news widget has crapped out again and can't display any info.
Not the end of the world, but it did happen once before. |

When I downloaded OS Sierra GM it didn't appear in the Updates list after I downloaded it and it still appears in Purchases to download. Does that mean it didn't download properly?

The GM doesn't appear in updates, only in purchased. It's a big download, and after downloading it will take around 20 minutes to install, including a couple of re-boots. You can check by clicking the Apple logo top left of screen, and then About This Mac. You should see version 10.12 when the GM is installed.
Edit: you won't see it in Updates as it's no longer part of the Beta programme - it's now officially a new version of the OS, ready for general release. |

Then you're good to go! Sounds like you downloaded and installed successfully.

It will still show available to download in case you need to do a clean install in the future for any reason.
