The score is a fair reflection of the game - that was a battering, not sure there was anything positive Ireland could take from that.
Very tough last game for Ireland. Even if it was against Italy's second team, all those players would want to impress the manager in the hope of becoming first choices; it might be their only chance in match play to impress the manager, so they will grab it with both hands (and feet).. |

It's quite impressive really, Ireland were the worst team at Euro 2012 in a 16 team tournament and have maintained that position and been the worst team four years later at Euro 2016 in a 24 team tournament.
That's consistency. And I'll see how Austria get on tonight against Portugal, as they were terrible against the group outsiders Hungary. |

First two goals were really badly defended by Ireland. The counter attacks that led to them could have have easily been cut out but the Irish were unbelievably sloppy and disorganised (I'd say several players will be dropped for the Italy game)

Andy Townsend looks like he just woke up.

Good grief, I listen to Andy Townsend spewing a stream of cliches - take it on the chin, dust yourself off ...- and then I remember listening to Jens Lehmann in live commentary, literally a world apart, the latter providing acutely perceptive analysis, the former producing little more than noise ...

That's consistency. According to the official UEFA stats, Sweden for example have yet to have a shot on target in the entire tournament. |

A bit premature to be saying that. Ireland have had one bad 45 minute spell in the tournament : they've been solid and well organised for the rest of it.

I dunno. I'd agree with them being the worst in Euro 2012, but Russia must be giving them a run for their money as far as Euro 2016 goes.

People took that post a little too seriously, I was just making a joke. FWIW I agree they haven't been quite the worst team this tournament although they have probably been in the bottom 5/6.

They're lucky today wasn't the third game anyway. That would have been a horrible performance to exit the tournament on and left a sour taste in the mouth. At least they have the opportunity to get their pride back in the last game (and possibly even go through).

It would be really going against the form book, and of normal lateral thinking, if Ireland did somehow progress from this current position that they are in.

Seems Origi didn't need to come on and save the day.
You're ruining my fantasy team, Belgium! Stop leaving Origi out! |

No, I did not think he was the first choice striker. Obviously Lukaku would play every game. I just thought he'd play more than he has, and knowing that if he played more he'd get me points. Give him a good 45 minutes of football and I'd fancy him to get a goal.

It was a slightly strange game too. 3-0 makes it sound like Belgium were in sensational form but Ireland made the most horrendous schoolboy errors for each of the three goals. With even a little bit more discipline, it might have been only a 1-0 defeat at most. |
