Seeing as all the rest of the 1960s are bound to be The Beatles, perhaps we should skip straight to 1970.

Possibly, but let's wait 'till tomorrow and see if there are some more members who would like to join. Maybe there are some Doors, Stones or Hendrix fans in later years.

I 'll suggest we'll stick to this format and start tomorrow with the year 1966 and so on in this topic/thread.

I hope there wille be more participants to join in.

I had a mate who was obsessed with Bob Dylan and I know The Beatles loved him, so I downloaded several of his early albums. I'm afraid I found them all unlistenable! I saw the Don't Look Back documentary and liked most of the songs as they appeared in the film, but they completely lost their magic when transferred to the album – Love Minus Zero in particular. I don't know why I've never seen anybody mention how John Lennon's Working Class Hero was a blatant rip-off of Masters of War.

List of 1965 albums here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1965_in_music

I only own a couple but don't rate them well enough to mention.

Well not really cause whilst 66 is Revolver, the Beatles best album IMO, in 67 The Velvet Underground released The Velvet Underground & Nico which is one of the most influential albums of all time.

Taken as a series the Beatles produced the best run of albums of all time, but individually there was usually something around to edge it - cept for Revolver.

I would agree with you that Revolver was the best album by The Beatles...though 66 also saw the release of Pet Sounds, so a tough choice between those two albums.

What makes an album 'the best'? We often get the refrain in these threads that it's all subjective and down to personal taste. Yet, you would not get many people who would suggest that the best album of 66 is other than 'Rubber Soul' or 'Highway 61 Revisited'. So there is a great deal of agreement about what is actually the best. The only subjective element is whether it is Dylan or The Beatles.

For me, 'Rubber Soul' is the best album. It was a qualitative shift in the construction of pop music; the album is both an artistic and commercial success and a huge influence on The Beatles musical peers (The Who, Ray Davies, The Stones, The Beach Boys etc.) and you can still listen to it now and it sounds great.

You've also got Blonde on Blonde in 66' and Forever Changes in 67'

For me it would have to be Rubber Soul. Though The Stones had a good album in Out Of Our Heads. It was not until Aftermath in 1966 which was their first "proper" album. As Out Of Our Heads is still mainly comprised of cover versions.

Ok, let's do the Year : 1966 !

Revolver - The Beatles

edit : although there are some song on it I don't like, this is the record from'66 I often listen to ....
Second I 'll go for the one from The Byrds ,called The 5th Dimension althought there are some weak(er) songs too I think.

To be honest you best giving leaving this thread as 1965. When it disapears of the first page then create a new thread for 1966.

So many great albums from 66, Pet Sounds, albums by The Sonics, The Seeds, a great Mamas and Papas album as well as John Mayalls Bluesbreakers album. The Monkees self titled though as of now is the last one I played, 2 weeks ago and as pop albums go it's a perfect example, theme from the monkees, I wanna be free, last train to clarksville, a perfect album.
