Saw Cyndi Lauper on BBC Breakfast this morning; she's still going strong and tomorrow (22nd June) she'll be 63, so happy birthday to her.

I never really followed her at the time, although 80's songs such as Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time and True Colors seem to be imprinted on the memory.

I couldn't help wondering if she's had a little bit of 'work' done on her face (no big deal of course - loads of stars do it to a certain extent) because when she smiled broadly it looked like her expression struggled to break out properly. Perhaps she's always looked that; like I said, I remember her early music but I can't remember seeing her on TV or anything.

I love Cyndi's earlier music on the albums She's So Unusual and True Colours.

But I became frustrated with her because she has been releasing all these covers albums of different genres like standards, blues, country etc. Her current album is an album of country covers.
I don't understand why she doesn't write her own original pop music anymore. Her voice is good, but her covers album just involve re-recording these older songs exactly which is very boring to me. Where is the creativity?
What I loved about her in the 80's was how unique and rebellious she was. But I feel she has lost that in her music with all these covers. To me, being unusual shouldn't just be about having pink hair but about creating your own original unique music.

I did see her live once, and while her voice was really good, she has this very annoying habit to talk a really long time between songs. I'm not talking a few sentences like most artists, but 10 minutes or so, in a very scatterbrained way. It's extremely annoying! So she does a relatively few number of songs.

I'm sure she uses Botox like a lot of other women her age. I don't think it's a big deal as people are very judgmental about getting older in the music business. You're not supposed to age or show your age on your face.

I couldn't agree more. Cyndi is a unique, talented artist. However, she needs to release more original music. Relying on releasing covers is lazy

I can understand her doing one covers album, but she does so many!

I can also understand her not wanting to do current pop music if she doesn't relate to it. But that doesn't mean she couldn't write new original songs in whatever genre. If she likes country, why not write original country songs?

But it seems quite a trend for older artists to do all these covers albums. Are they really all that successful? I haven't followed her new album too closely, so I don't know how well it did on the charts.

She wrote the songs for Kinky Boots, they are all pretty damn good.

I only know one of her songs, which I love.
Good Enough - which she sang for the Goonies soundtrack.

Yes, but that doesn't involve her singing. Why not write songs for a new album too?

Seriously?! Surely not. Investigate further in that case would be my advice.

Listening suggestions, not including any of her many big hits!....

You Don't Know

Sisters Of Avalon

Same Ol Story.
