Those mannequins behind the goal appear to have no authority whatsoever. Or are the referees too proud to defer to the decision of a subordinate who happens to be in a better position to make a correct call?

Ireland definitely the better side but I doubt Conte will accept another half like that.

Glenn Hoddle making the point about needing a referee to be strong enough to give penalties for holding in the box in order to cut it all out.
I'm sure I heard pundits saying the same thing 20 years ago and nothing has changed. |

That would have been a fantastic goal by Zaza.

Irish passing is so poor. Any pressure put on them and they pass it backwards.

Ireland on top now
They're getting into good positions around the penalty area but they can't find the quality to make clear-cut chances. |

Ireland have all the possession but zero quality to do anything with it.

It's almost as if Italy are trying to throw the match.

It's reminiscent of England-Slovakia; dominating possession, but can't create a clear chance inside the box.

Need a goal to put this game from neutral into first gear.

I wonder if the anti-corruption authorities will be taking a look at the betting patterns on this match?
And what is the point of Howard Webb other than as an excuse machine for his former brothers in whistles? |

That is what makes it a good event for some dodgy spot-betting that does not affect the overall course of the match or competition.
