Who is the greatest European footballer of all time??
As we're in the middle of the Euro's right now, I decided to dedicate a thread to who people here think is the greatest player to ever come from this continent.
I think its well regarded that three greatest footballers of all time by most peoples opinions are, Pele, Maradona and Messi (you can squabble all day long which order they come in), not everyone will agree, but to most people, they're probably the top 3 GOAT's. But of course NONE of these three come from Europe. So South America we can say almost certainly owns the three greatest footballers of all time. But who would Europe's greatest ever player? Younger people will emphatically say Cristiano Ronaldo I suspect, but surely he would have competition from Zidane, Platini, Cruyff, Beckenbauer even George Best? This wont be a popular opinion, but I think Roberto Baggio also must run close, go a youtube video of his greatest moments and its almost as good as Messi or Maradona, brilliant footballer. I decided to put a poll up. |

As a teenager I was lucky enough to see George Best play on many occasions; I was a United fan in those days as well. He will always be the greatest for me, whether that is a rational choice or otherwise. I don't think anyone who did not live in Britain at the time he was in his prime can really understand the impact he had, not just on football, but on British culture more generally. I don't think he could understand it either. For me Best was our Pele, who was a distant, rarely seen football star/celebrity.

Interesting how all of the options are outfield options, why no love for the humble goalkeeper??

Paolo Maldini was the greatest defender of all time and the most "complete" footballer, so not to have him in the poll is a travesty. Aside from that, Zinedine Zidane is the greatest footballer I hve ever seen play. I would absolutely put him at the same table as Maradona and Pele.

Ronaldo, totally dominated the premier league when he was here and now doing a stellar job in Spain.
International record a bit average but his club record is phenomenal. |

I'm gonna go for Zidane, the guy just oozed class when he was on the field. There are some absolutely fantastic players on the list though.
Have to agree with the opening post regarding Baggio, he dragged a poor Italy side to the 94 world cup final, scoring some brilliant goals on the way. Xavi and Iniesta have been wonderful to watch since the Guardiola era. Although to young to watch Cruyff, he's probably the number one footballer when it comes to, who has the most impact on the game. |

It's a cracking nickname though. I'm changing my vote to Dennis "footballer who played for Arsenal and the Netherlands amongst other sides" Bergkamp

Messi will probably win a Copa America at least with Argentina, but Argentina are much better side than his Portugal right now, plus Copa America's significantly much easier to win than the euro's. |

In the 'other' option every single poll like this would have because amazingly you can't list everybody, like you can't deter pedants.
