Wowah, Owen!! Pele was phenomenal for Santos. It was his club performances that got him into the Brazilian national side at 17 and kept scoring for Santos for more than a decade afterwards.
Good point

But how strong was the Brazilian league back then

Wow Zidane was miles in the lead last time I looked a few hours ago, now Ronaldo's nearly drawn level.

Must be that Hungary match! Yes possibly people really have changed their opinions all of a sudden of who is the best European player in the past 60 years based on one group game at today's euro's!

Well Ronaldo has finally produced for his country, even though it is one match

To be fair, he has had good games before. That is not the issue here. The real great have great tournaments.

"the real greats", it gets worse and worse. If only George Best was English perhaps he could have been a great player too. Oh well it's his own fault.

First names that came to mind were Puskas, Beckenbauer and Cruyff but the best player I've seen (and I hate doing this as I think you need to look at each position seperately) is ZZ.

The strange thing is the 'real greats' contemporaries of George Best - Pele, Eusebio, for instance - were convinced he was also great. No doubt they would have changed their minds had they had access to these forums.

Portuguese great Eusebio has paid a glowing tribute to George Best, calling the former Manchester United superstar a genius.
Best, who underwent a liver transplant in 2002, died in a London hospital on Friday from multiple organ failure, aged 59.
Eusebio witnessed first hand two of Best's most memorable performances for United, the 5-1 defeat of Benfica in the European Cup quarter-final in 1966 and the 1968 final when Best scored a great solo goal as United beat the Portuguese club 4-1.
"For me today is not good for me, my family, for everyone who knows George Best, who knows football. George Best was the best player in the world, not just England, and a good friend of mine", Eusebio told RTV on Friday night.
"I remember one day he played against Benfica in 1966 in Lisbon, we lost 5-1 and George Best was spectacular, a genius.
"I remember in the final in 1968 against Manchester United at Wembley. George Best for me continues to be my friend in my heart. I am very sorry."

The legendary Brazilian footballer Pele famously named George Best as the world's greatest ever player.
Now he has said the former Manchester United star's talent on the pitch was not that of a European, but a Brazilian.
......

"You know, not long before he died we met in London. His father was there," said Pele.
He added that Best was "an unbelievable player".
"To me he never looked like a European. He was a Latin player – a Brazilian player," he said.
Best was once quoted as saying: "Pele called me the greatest footballer in the world. That is the ultimate salute to my life."

But, hey, what do Eusebio and Pele know about great footballers?

Of course George Best is a great. Its the likes of Best that make a mockery of the elitism on display here where unless you play for the right country you can only be considered good up to a point purely because of factors you cant control (birth, team mates etc).

That said though, I'm not sure Id be referencing Pele to back up my point given some of the stuff he has come out with over the years!

I plumped for Baresi, though I'd have preferred Maldini. I think defenders tend to get overlooked in these type of polls because they don't score the eye catching goals, or make spectacular saves etc but without a good defence all your flair players will get you nowhere.

where's Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano, John Charles and Tom Finney,
Puskas is in the pub down the road from me, Del Stetano is having lunch (with his mum of course), John Charles is in Aldi, and Tom Finney's in the pub as well.

You left out Ferenc Puskas, the greatest European player ever .

Between 20 Aug 1945 and 14 Oct 1956 Puskás scored 84 goals on 85 international matches within the Hungarian National Team. There were no players who could beat this record since then .

Paolo Maldini was the greatest, but Fabio Cannavaro's WC 2006 performance is the best performance by a defender I have ever seen and I will be forever grateful to him

He's getting best goalie from me just for being such a gracious class-act last night after the ROI victory. I'm also proposing that you add Robbie Brady

Seriously, though. Best.

I can see Pogba, being the next player who'll heavily divide opinion on how great he is.
Apparently, he's getting a lot of stick in France for his performances. He says he's not bothered by it and has nothing to prove.
I'm firmly in the 'overrated player' camp. Good, but very far from being great.

Best Goalie only.

Trautmann
Swift
Zoff
Buffon
Casillas
Schmeichel
Shilton

must be one of those, surely.
Add Neuer to thie list

And if he came up against the kind of defending Chelsea currently have he would have scored 50 goals a season, we can all play a fictitious game of What If.

Ronaldo has scored a lot of goals against good opponents, don't really think having scored one goal against Chelsea will bother him too much with his 3 champions league medals around his neck.
Ian Rush never scored against Man Utd. Doesn;t mean he wasn;t one of the very best poachers of the eighties.

The Miracle of Bern changed both countries' histories!
They also affected the Dutch psyche in 1974, and probably the French in 1982

Can you blame me?

Definitely. But the Miracle of Bern was more than just a sporting event. It is cited as the beginning of Germany's post-war miracle. It was THAT important - similar to the US Miracle on Ice in 1980

I voted for Ronaldo, partially to be contrarian, but would have seriously considered Puskas if he were an option. I'm not sure how comfortable I would have been with that choice though because I've never seen him in 'real time' as I have with Ronaldo, though I do watch a decent amount of old football.
