I'm really enjoying it, the only down side is the finishing. There isn't much between the teams and it seem's like any team can win.

I find the whole tournament really boring thus far.. the "star players" are not shining like we demand of them.

A bit of an anti-climax to me.

What does everyone think of the tournament?
Not wishing to be too down on tournament but all this. I really enjoyed first round of matches as I got to see different styles of football and watch new teams i've not seen play, which definitely made up for the lack of goals. But since then its been a real much of a muchness and not enough quality. There's been the odd moments though. But yet again another tournament where all the hugely talented players have turned up knackered and spent and not shone. I don't think its a coincidence that Rooney having an enforced injury lay of mid-season and a low key end to his season meant he's finally shown some quality in an Eng jersey.

Its been disappointing so far, too many games where there are few chances and no real entertainment, having said that the tournament will hopefully improve once we get past the group stage.

Goals per game average is now 1.89, with 36 of the 52 games played.

Usually every current tournament is called the GREATEST TOURNAMENT EVA, the last World cup was full of such claims, by pundits in pre paid 5 star hotels sitting along the Copacabana watching football all day. So if this doesn't get this claim at least once by some pundit then its the tournaments legacy's not looking good.

The only tournament in my lifetime where pundits didn't make any such claims were WC 2010, mainly because it was just so shit.

Agreed*. The pressure for instant reaction these days does make people come out with "best tournament ever" stuff. But that's just because everything gets instant reaction now. If you really want to know whether this is a great tournament or not, you have to give it a few years. It's like wine. You can't know at the time whether it's any good.

* apart from the suggestion that the oft-quoted "goals-per-game" is a key measure of the quality of a tournament.

The first 2 sets of games have been excellent - most of the 3rd games have been very poor though as some have qualified and look to rest their players with a yellow card and some have given up the ghost.

On a whole the football has been quite refreshing for it's flowing nature and players just getting on with it ... but the quality in the final 3rd has been very poor. The finishing has been very amateur for the supposed cream of europe ...

I can't help feeling we are now going to get a lot of attack vs defence games as we have so many poor teams left in the knock-out stage, but time will tell.

I've liked it. maybe it hasn't exploded yet but hopefully that will come in the knockout stages.

I've liked how the smaller nations have held their own and basically said to the more fancied nations that if you are going to beat us you will have to really earn that victory.

Please explain to me the fairness in having SOME group winners play 3rd placed teams, SOME group winners play runner-up teams, SOME runner-up teams playing group winners and SOME runner-up teams playing other runner-up teams? How does that make sense?
What else would you suggest when you have to get down to 16 teams from an original number of 24?

Its been good so far. Generally positive football and attacking play has been rewarded and the lesser teams have really played to their strengths. As an earlier poster said I think now we are in the knockout stage we could see some classics. I hope the less likely sides continue to play positively rather than backs to the wall.

Its probably the only way that works with 24 teams. Other formats of 24 would either bloat the tournament and/or lead to too many dead matches. Its been used for three world cups so its not as though its never been tested.

Both me and my partner have (either together or separately), seen every match and we are both in agreement, this has been the most boring tournament either of us have watched. So many games have had passes that have led to nothing, players just collapsing on the floor and wasting a minute or two pretending to be injured. Too many games where the chances haven't been converted. Too many games where the goal, that has been needed to liven a match up, has come beyond the 87th minute and so we have a slightly exciting finish but that doesn't make up for the fact the football hasn't been entertaining.

Today is a prime example for the pair of us. We saw Switzerland V Poland, goal of the tournament aside, was quite boring until penalties. Wales V Northern Ireland, didn't really get going until the goal went in but even then the quality of the finishing was poor. Now we are watching Croatia V Portugal and the finishing and chance creation has been very poor, the standard of play has been boring and, to say it's a match that features quality on either side (Nani, Ronaldo, Modric etc), you wouldn't have thought it.

It's certainly running South Africa 2010 close for having so many dull matches. Getting through to the knock out stages doesn't seemed to have lived things up one bit on the evidence of the 3 games so far today..

It's certainly as bad as South Africa 2010 now the rest of it will determine whether it's the worst one ever now

Group stages were good but the Portugal Vs Croatia game highlights how poor the final 16 games might be in terms of teams playing so painfully safe.

The first major tournament game without a shot on target inside 90 minutes since 1980. : yawn:

Group stages were good I thought but today's 3 knockout games were awful.

Mind you Germany World Cup in 2006 was like that, cracking group games then petered out a bit til the semi final

Only one moment of real quality today..

Maybe it was due to the teams playing not wanting to lose rather than go out for the win?

A bit lacklustre for me, though I wasn't excited for this tournament anyway, just seemed to lack something, maybe because these days, we get to see these exciting players week in week out and usually at a higher level of football then at International level.
I agree, although I also agree with others that a few classic matches in the knockout stages could turn it into a tournament that we fondly remember.
But for me, the gulf between top-level club football and international football has never been so apparent as at this tournament. It is full of teams who would have absolutely no chance in any of the big club leagues.

Apart from the second half of the Switzerland vs Poland game, it was a very poor day. But, imho, that's the first really bad day so far.
The one problem has been the defences have been so much better that the attacks.
We get so used to seeing poor, wide open and at times almost clueless defenses at club level, when faced with capable, well organised defenses, the towards and midfield's have struggled.
Bale is another so called superstar who, a few free kicks apart, has looked far from that level. He has been nothing like the player we were used to seeing at Spurs.
